THE PARKER FAMILY - The history of Hampshire County is interwoven with that of the Parker family and the many connections and interrelations. The founder of the family in America was Robert Parker who came from England (*). He had four sons and two daughters. His sons were Peter, Robert, Soloman and Nat., his daughters Katie and Susan.  In the Revolutionary War Nat was a Tory, and disappeared. It was never ascertained what became of him, as he was never again heard of. But the other children married, and their descendants are now found not only in Hampshire County, but in the distant states. The family of each of these children will be traced separately.

* Many historical biographical sketches from the late 1800's stated that an ancestor born prior to the American Revolution came from England.  Technically all Americans born before the American Revolution were Englishman.  Robert Parker's father John Parker may be the immigrant ancestor (unproven). Robert has been commonly stated to have been born abt 1730, but if the order of names in his maternal grandfather's 1751 Nottingham, Burlington Co. NJ. will is correct, which matches the order of John Parker 1700-1760's children in a 1765 Hampshire Co. VA deed of partition is correct, then Robert Parker was born about 1721.  A circa 1860 family bible belonging to a descendant of his brother Nathaniel Parker states Nathaniel Parker was born in 1724 Virginia.  So Robert Parker could have been born in either Virginia, Bucks Co. PA, or New Jersey.  See Origins of John Parker 1700-1760

The 1765 deed of partition [Hampshire Co., VA DB 1:282-8] for the estate of John Parker, dcd. lists his wife Elizabeth (Parker) McQuire, Robert Parker, Richard Parker, Nathaniel Parker, Aaron Parker, Catherine Parker and Elizabeth Parker.  There were seven tracts of land and the heirs apparently decided among themselves who would receive which portions of the land. The grandson Thomas was not included in this division of land because according to the deed he had died without issue and not of legal age, but the newly married widow did share. All of the land was in Hampshire County except for one tract on Mountain Run in Culpepper County which was allocated 1/2 to Richard Parker and 1/2 to his sister Elizabeth Nalle. All of the children signed the deed along with John's widow Elizabeth McGuire and all appeared to be living in HampshireCounty at the time it was executed.

1765 Land Indenture - Thomas McGuire to Robert Parker, 113 acres on New Creek.

Robert Parker furnished supplies for the American Revolution.  SAR/DAR #: A087756.

While Robert Parker is acknowledged as furnishing supplies for the American Revolution, he is also on the 1776 Washington Co., MD Militia roster implying that he also served during the war. [Rosters, Washington County Militia, ca. 1776, Revolutionary War Records, MS 1146, Box 1, Folder 9  (credit to Patty Parker Lovely parkerlovely(at)gmail)]  along with his brother Aaron Parker.

A 1786 act for establishing several public ferries, and for other purposes.
I. BE it enacted by the General Assembly, That public ferries shall be constantly kept at the following places, and the rates for passing the same as hereafter mentioned, that is to say: From the land of Thompson Mason, deceased, in the county of Loudoun, across the Potowmack river, to the land on the opposite shore, in the state of Maryland, the price for a man six-pence, and for a horse the same; from the land of Robert Parker, in the county of Hampshire, across the South branch of Potowmack river, to his land on the opposite shore, the price for a man three-pence three farthings, and for a horse the same;  (27 Oct 1786 Robert Parker petition to Virginia General Assembly)

Robert Parker will drafted 13 Sep 1805, proved 16 December, 1816, Hampshire, Co., Va- In the name of God amen. I give and bequeath the two third of my negroes to my daughter Catren Johnson to her and her heirs I give and bequeath to my son Solomon Parker (married Sarah Wright) the tract of land I now live on containing three hundred and 77 acres. All I owe that adjoining -------------containing two hundred and ten acres all to one tract of 49 acres and one of 33 acres adjoining where I now live to him, his heirs and assigns forever and I give and bequeath one of the negroes I now have in my possession to be equally divided between my son Peter Parker and my daughter Catreen Johnson that is to say after my wife Margret's death. Lastly it is my will that the remainder of my property be sold and with my outstanding debts are cash to be equally divided between my wife Margret (2nd wife) and my daughter Catreen Johnson and Solomon Parker, my son. Constitute and appoint my son Solomon Parker my executor of this my last will and testament in witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this 13th day of September one thousand eighteen hundred and five and of the independence of the writer states the thirtieth signs, sealed and published in presents of us. Peter Parker was a Rev. Soldier (DAR Patriot Index p. 516.)

15 July, 1799--Peter Parker appointed overseer of the road from the top of the branch mountain to the end of Jacob Earsom's lane in the room of Robert Parker. (Hampshire Co., Va Minute Book).

1810 census of Hampsire County, Va: Peter Parker: 1011-3211 It appears that Peter and Mary had 6 daughters at this time, but only 4 are identified. Julia Parker was born in 1811, so there may have been 7 daughters. There is also an unidentified male, to 10, who may have been an unidentified son.
1820 census of Hampshire County, Va: Peter Parker 100201-11401 There are some unidentified individuals here. Solomon D. Parker is the only known son, yet there are two males in his age group, perhaps the younger boy in the 1810 census, and also now another young boy, to 10. There are also two extra females, consistent with the 1810 census. In 1820 there are 19 slaves.

Robert Parker married Sarah Campbell (*). They had three sons; Clausen, John and Richard, and two daughters Hannah and Katie (living at the time of Robert Parkers will). Clausen married Rebecca Taylor and settled on the Ohio River, John went to Ohio, Richard went to Kentucky. Katie married Mr. McCracken and went west, Hannah married John Brady and they had one son James and six daughters, Sallie, Katherine, Mary, Harriet, Hannah, and Rebecca. James never married; Sallie married Mr. Middleton and afterwards Mr. Neville, Katherine married Mr. Wheeler, Mary married Rev. C. Parkison; Harriet married Joseph Taylor; Hannah married Alonzo Fowler, Rebecca married Dr. John Dailey.

(*) Laura Dill Morton of  Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio has the 1804 Robert Parker Junr family bible thus the birth dates for the children listed below.

"Richard went to Kentucky" - I suspect the author of  "The History of Hampshire County, West Virginia" confused this Robert Parker's son Richard, with his uncle Richard Parker who moved from Hampshire County, VA to Culpeper County, VA shortly after the 1765 estate settlement, and then migrated circa 1790 from there with all of his children to Nelson County, KY.  Robert Parker's son Richard Parker migrated to Ross County, Ohio.
