Lunenburg (now Bedford) County, VA Mitchell's circa 1750

This page is an attempt to identify and seperate the children of the Mitchell's who received late 1740's to early 1750 Lunenburg County, VA land grants which later became Bedford County, VA; plus those Mitchell's shown within Rootsweb.com trees as having been born between 1753 and roughly 1793.  DO NOT take the children listed as Gospel unless there's accompanying documentation.

Campbell County, VA. formed 15 Dec 1781 from Bedford County, VA.

Bedford County, VA formed 13 Dec 1753 from Lunenburg County, VA.

Lunenburg County, VA formed  1 April 1746 from Brunswick County, VA.

Brunswick County, VA formed in 17 Dec 1720 from Prince Georges County, VA.

We know that Robert Mitchell and Daniel Mitchell were brothers as Daniel Mitchell made his brother Robert as one of his executors in his 13 June 1775 Bedford County, VA. will.  And I believe based upon James Mitchell being listed with Robert Mitchell and Daniel Mitchell in a 1754-58 Bedford County, VA. Road Order; as well as James Mitchell having married Margaret Caldwell and Daniel is reputed to have married Mary Caldwell; that James is also a brother. The earliest reference to Robert Mitchell on the north side of Roanoak River in Lunenburg County, VA., adjoining his own land is 10 Jan 1748 which means Robert was in Lunenburg County by / before 1747. The earliest reference to Daniel Mitchell in Lunenburg County, VA land grants is dated 1753 where he is referenced as the adjacent land owner to a land indenture for John Hood.   The earliest reference to James Mitchell for 1,527 acres along the south side of the Roanoak River is the 5 Aug 1751. James Mitchell about 1751 married Margaret (Caldwell) Rodgers (Rogers) the widow of William Rodgers of Lunenburg County, VA. who died in Oct 1750.  The earliest Lunenburg County, VA. land indenture for William Rodgers is dated 20 Sep 1748.  And the earliest Lunenburg County, VA. land indenture for John Caldwell consisting of 281 acres on the south side of Bannister River is dated 1 Jun 1750.  That puts the Caldwells, Rodgers and Mitchells in Lunenburg County, VA in the 1748 to 1750 timeframe, so any child listed below born in and after 1748 is listed as born in Bedford County, VA.

38 Rootsweb trees state Robert and Daniel Mitchell's parents were John Michell and Mary Boyd, while 8 Rootsweb trees state Robert Mitchell and Mary Innis were their parents.  It should be noted that most trees have the children of John Mitchell and Mary Boyd as 1) Thomas, 2) Elinor, 3) Mary 4) Robert, 5) John, 6) James, & 7) Elizabeth which matches the order as presented for John Mitchell and his wife Elizabeth Wilson of Augusta County, VA.  That John Mitchell's will is dated 14 Feb 1771.  And it DOES NOT reference a Daniel Mitchell, while the Daniel Mitchell who died BEF 1775 Bedford County, VA names his brother Robert as an Executor.

Daniel Mitchell descendants:  (earliest Lunenburg County, VA land grant dated 1753 - 21 years which puts birth by or before 1732 ).  Most trees show him born about 1718 Londonderry, Ulster, Ireland  This Daniel Mitchell belongs to Michell yDNA Family Group #04.

1.0 - Daniel Mitchell born abt. 1718 Londonderry, Ulster, Ireland, Delaware, or 1724 Lancaster, PA., died Bedford County, VA. Bef 25 Sep 1775; married Mary Campbell or  ABt. 1754 Mary Caldwell born Abt. 1727  [Question any child born in 1772 or after due to menopause (age of mother + 45 years)]  Whose father was Robert Mitchell  who married Mary Innis (Enos) or John Mitchell who married Mary Boyd ???

31 May 1753 John Hood Lunenburg County, VA. Land Indenture states 2300 acres on the south side of the Roanoke River adjoining Daniel Mitchell - Library of Virginia Online Catalog.

As the above document puts Daniel Mitchell in Lunenburg County, VA in 1753 then at least half of his children were born in Lunenburg County, VA.

Is this the William Mitchell who married Sarah Hawkins, daughter of Benjamin Hawkins and Martha Borden? After Benjamin Hawkins died, Sarah Hawkins married Robert Harvey, thus the step-grandfather mentioned below.

Some Rootsweb file shows Martha Borden born 15 Jan 1746 and Sarah Hawkins her daughter as a younger sister to Magdelene Hawkins born 24 Jul 1775 Springfield, Rockbridge Co., VA. (Rockbridge County, VA is adjacent to and northwest of Bedford County, VA. And Botetourt County, VA is adjacent and to the west of Bedford County VA.)

It was omitted at the enumeration of the children of Mrs. Martha Borden Hawkins by her first husband, Benjamin Hawkins, that one of his daughters Sarah Hawkins, married Mr. William Mitchell of Bedford County, and was the mother of Harvey Mitchell Esq., named after his step-grandfather, Robert Harvey, and of Mr. Robert Mitchell, of Bedford County. In Lunenburg County, VA. three 1748 land grants reference Robert Mitchell. In Bedford County, VA. there is one in the year 1773.  The three 1748 land grants strongly suggest that Robert, Daniel & James Mitchell were in that portion of Lunenburg County, VA. no later than 1748 so any child born in 1748 or after are listed as having been born in Bedford County, VA,.

2.1 - David Mitchell born 1737 born (Ireland, Delaware, Pequea, PA. (need documentation)) (not mentioned in Robert's will dated 23 Apr 1781)

One researcher says he was born 5 Oct 1737 in Armagh, Ulster, Ireland and died 10 Jun 1817 in Xenia, Greene, Ohio.

2.2 - Frances Mitchell born 1743 (Ireland, Delaware, Pequea, PA. (need documentation)), died _____; married 24 Aug 1783 Bedford County, VA. Benjamin Hodges (not mentioned in Robert's will dated 23 Apr 1781)

Bedford Co., VA Marriage Bonds:  24 Aug 1783; Benjamin Hodges & Frances Mitchell, dt Robert, Sr.; Daniel Mitchell, Surety; Consent of Rebecak Stevenson, guardian.

This researcher believes that Frances was the daughter of Robert Jr and not Sr. Below is possibly a transcription error. Benjamin appears to have been underage in 1783 and received the consent of Rebecca Stevenson (possibly his grandmother) to marry.  This seems valid given that she is not mentioned in Robert Mitchell (1714-1799) will.

2.3 - Susannah L. Mitchell born 1744 (Ireland, Delaware, Pequea, PA. (need documentation)).; died 20 Aug 1813 Mercer County, KY., burial AUG 1813 Chaplin Fork, Mercer, KY (Family farm); married 1763 (son David D. A Post-em note states: Joseph Davis' will calls Enos and Joseph Mitchell his grandsons per your notes, Margaret and James Davis his children. Enos wasn't married to his aunt Margaret Davis.   (And this researcher says the Enos Michell who married Harriet Newell Chaffin father was Robert Harvey Mitchell)

Per Robert Mitchell's will and estate settlement, he had 5 children: Robert Jr, Susannah, Samuel, Daniel, and Stephen. I don't believe that Enos was his child. Enos doesn't really live near Robert Sr and his brother Daniel Mitchell Sr, but those 2 were witnesses to Joseph Davis' 1778 will, possibly to protect their nephews' interests. I suspect that Enos and his brother Joseph were children of James Mitchell Sr (c1710 - 1776) by a first marriage. James married second Margaret (Caldwell) Rodgers, widow of William Rodgers.

Rev James Mitchel, longtime pastor of Peaks Presbyterian Church in Bedford Co., Virginia-55 years!

"Rev. James Mitchel was a son of the late Robert Mitchel (born in northern Ireland) and Mary Enos, his wife. The Mitchel family emigrated to America in the early eighteenth century. Rev. James Mitchel was licensed a Presbyterian minister in October, 1781. In 1782 he married Frances Blair Rice, the daughter of the Rev. David Rice, and soon afterward moved to Kentucky and engaged in preaching and teaching. He returned to Virginia to preach at Hat Creek and Concord, but returned to Kentucky, where he was instrumental in the formation of Transylvania Presbytery. He was appointed the first teacher in Transylvania Seminary, which was opened in February, 1785, near Danville.

He was called to the church at Peaks of Otter, in Bedford County, Virginia, and was installed as pastor of that church in March, 1786, where he remained until his death on the 27th day of February, 1841, in his 95th year. * - Believed to be the same Willliam Mitchell age 66 listed as having made an affidavit in Lewis County, KY in 1834 that in 1776 Richard Bean/Bane served in a company with two of William Mitchells uncles, Robert and Stephen Mitchell from Bedford Coun;ty, VA. and still alive age 83 in the 1850 Lewis County, KY. U.S. census.  If the same, he was born Abt. 1767 or 1768 and died after 1850 in Lewis County, KY.  As this would make his father only 18 when William was born, and age 21 was normal for a man to marry, it suggests his father Daniel was born before 1750 as stated by genealogy researcher Marilyn K. Moore.  There is space between 2.7 Daniel Mitchell's siblings 2.5 Susannah and 2.6 Samuel for a birth year of 1746.

One tree says this:  About the year 1808 Robert Mitchell moved from Bedford County across the Blue Ridge to Carroll County, then a part of Grayson. His brother Rev. James Mitchell visited him from time to time in his Carroll County home, baptizing his children and preaching for his neighbors.  But the Grayson County tax lists DO NOT bear this out.  It appears the Rev. James Mitchell was visiting his brother Stephen Mitchell who migrated to that portion of Grayson Co., VA that later became Carroll Co., VA..

Several family files on Rootsweb.com suggest that the children of James Mitchell, Sr. and Margaret (Caldwell) Rodgers born 16 Mar 1712 were:

 1) Finley Mitchell (I suspect this Finley Mitchell is actually James Mitchell Jr.'s son Samuel Findley Mitchell born 1806 in Mercer County, KY.)
2) James Mitchell, Jr. b. 1754
3) John Mitchell b. 3 Nov 1761 ; died Jun 1809 Bedford County, VA.
4) Robert Mitchell b. 1766 - John Isaac Mitchell
5) Elizabeth Mitchell born 1767
6) Sarah Mitchell born 1768
7) Thomas Mitchell born 1769
8) Tellitha/Tibittha Mitchell born 1770; died 1850; married 22 Jan 1792 Benjamin C. Ellis in Bedford County, VA. He was born ABT. 1768 in Cambridge, MA and died Abt. 1850 Bedford VA.  Most of the Rootsweb.com family files have her as the daughter of John Mitchell and Ann Greer.(see below)

If the birth year for Margaret Caldwell is truly 1712, then she would have been age 42 when James Mitchell, Jr. was born, 49 years old when John Mitchell was born, 54 years old when Robert Mitchell was born, 55 years old when Elizabeth Mitchell was born, 56 years old when Sarah Mitchell was born, 57 years old when Thomas Mitchell was born, and 58 years old when Tellitha/Tibitha Mitchell was born. A Wikipedia chart shows the percentage of decline of ovarian reserve related to increasing age. Statistically any child listed as born after 1761 is unlikely to be a child of Margaret (Caldwell) Rodgers as her ovarian reserve would have been depleted. This suggests a probable appending / misatribution of children from a different James Mitchell, to the James Mitchell, Sr. that married Margaret (Caldwell) Rodgers, that the birth years for several of the children are wrong, or the birth year for Margaret Caldwell is later than the 1712 date.

There's also the issue that John Rogers, half-brother to the above James Mitchell, states in an 11 May 1825 letter to his cousin Elias Boudinot Caldwell in which he stated that after his father William Rogers died in Oct 1750 (within weeks of his grandfather John Caldwell having died), his mother Margaret (Caldwell) Rogers, married about 1751 James Mitchell by whom she had five (5) children.  So at least three children in the above list of eight are questionable.  See: Caldwell Genealogy and Colonial Men and Times: Containing the Journal of Col. Daniel Trabue by Daniel Trabue.

While there seems to be a case that the above three Mitchels ( 1.0 Daniel, 2.0 Robert & 3.0 James) were brothers, I don't believe 4.0 John Isacc Mitchell and his brother 5.0 Thomas Mitchell are of the same Mitchell line.  This John Mitchell belongs to Michell yDNA Family Group #05.

6.0 -  Elizabeth Mitchell born Aug 1750 Bedford County  (then Lunenburg County), VA.; died 28 July 1843 age 92 years 11 months Clinton County, Ohio with burial in the New Antioch Cemetery, Clinton County, OH (Findagrave); married Andrew B. Irvin. born 1748; died 25 Apr 1830 Clinton County, OH with burial New Antioch Cemetery, Clinton County, OH. (Findagrave)

Two possibilities:

1st possibility of origins:  This Elizabeth Mitchell does not appear in Rootsweb.com family trees as a child of 1.0 - Daniel Mitchell but may be as Abraham Irvin and John Irvin are listed as Appraisers of the 1775 Estate Inventory and 1790 Final Property settlement of Daniel Mitchell.  Her son Caleb E. Irvine married James Mitchell, Jrs (3.1) daughter Elizabeth Ewing Mitchell.  Based upon Elizabeth Mitchells headstone, she died 28 July 1843 age 92 years 11 months, which means she was born in Aug 1750. 1.0 - Daniel Mitchell’s brother 2.0 - Robert Mitchell had a son Samuel P. Mitchell (2.6) who was born 5 Nov. 1749 so it’s unlikely that she was Robert’s daughter. And my 3.0 -  James Mitchell Sr. did not marry the widow Margaret (Caldwell) Rogers until 1751 or 1752 as her husband William Rogers did not die until Oct. 1750.

2nd possibility of origins:  It's also possible that this Elizabeth Mitchell was a sister to 4.0 - John Michell & 5.0 - Thomas Mitchell are her brothers as Elizabeth Mitchell was included in an 1899 book The Irvines and Their Kin wherein it states that Elizabeth Mitchell was the daughter William Mitchell and Elizabeth Innes who came to Bedford County, VA.  The issue with this statement is that the William Mitchell who married Elizabeth Innes was born Abt. 1667 and died in 1725 Chesterfield County, VA.. And Elizabeth Innes was born Abt. 1670 which means if she was alive in Aug 1750 when Elizabeth Mitchell was born, she’d have been 80 years old and her husband William Mitchell would have been deceased for 25 years.

If The Irvines and Their Kin book was based upon oral family history that Elizabeth Mitchell's father was a William Mitchell, then it's possible she was the daughter of William Mitchell born 6 Feb 1699 Baltimore County, Maryland and Elizabeth Elliott born Abt. 1710 Baltimore County, MD. who were married on 30 Sep 1736 Baltimore County, MD. as 4.0 - John Mitchell and 5.0 - Thomas Mitchell above are identified in Rootsweb trees as being two of their children and they both died in Bedford County, VA.  This Elizabeth Mitchell does not appear in the list of children of William Mitchell and Elizabeth Elliott as listed in the last two Rootsweb files, but falls within the timeframe for when Elizabeth Elliott was able to bear children.  Further research is needed.

[3]  Presbyterian Encyclopedia, Page 531 Paragraph #, Rev. James Mitchell

James Mitchell was born at Pequea, Penn. Jan. 29, 1747.His parents removed from Pennsylvania to Bedford County Va. where they resided many years. Of the circumstances of either his classical or theological education little is known, though he was for a time previous to his entering the ministry a Tutor in Hampden Sidney College. He was licensed to preach the gospel by Hanover Presbytery in October 1781.Shortly after his licensure, he seems, by advice of his Presbytery to have taken a Missionary tour into the Western Territories. In 1782 he removed to Kentucky, where he
exercised his ministry for a short time and supported his family chiefly by teaching a school. In 1784 he was installed pastor of the churches of Hot Creek and Dub Creek and preached to them about three years. In March 1786 the church of the Peaks in Bedford gave him a call which he accepted and here with a congregation covering an indefinite extent of territory around the Peaks he passed his long Ministerial Life. He died Feb. 27, 1841.Mr Mitchell often made Missionary excursions, traveling for weeks and even months at a time in the southwestern counties of Virginia. Wherever he happened to be, he was always ready to preach in his preaching was always acceptable and often highly effective. He was jealous in all innovations, not only in the doctrines, but the usage of the church.
