The following is an exact transcription of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) of Virginia Historical Inventory

1. SUBJECT: The Johnson Family Bible

2. LOCATION: At "Laurel Hill" 4 miles northwest of Rixeyville on Route #640, thence southwest .5 mile on Route #627, thence south .5 mile on private road to "Laurel Hill"

3. DATE: unknown

4. OWNERS: Miss Bettie Johnson, Rixeyville, Virginia

5. DESCRIPTION: This Bible is twelve inches long, ten inches wide and three and one half inches thick. It is bound in leather and embossed. There are marginal references, and a temperance blank for signing the pledge, but no signers' names. There are also many engravings of biblical scenes.

6. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following inscriptions:

Smith H. JOHNSON and Mary E. BYWATERS were married the 31st day of March 1883

Births

Henry Darnel JOHNSON, son of Smith H. and Mary E. JOHNSON, his wife, was born the 6th day of February 1884

Smith H. JOHNSON was born the 24th of December 1860

Mary E. BYWATERS was born the 21st of August 1856

Deaths

Henry D. JOHNSON died the 1st day of June 1893
