Geography Sweden's 2nd largest island. Connected to mainland S. by "Ölandsbron" (Öland bridge) connecting Kalmar (mainland) and Färjestaden (Öland), abt 6 km long, 13 m wide and 42 m high (middle part), built 1967-72.
Before the bridge there was boat traffic. A one-way trip in 1813 was 3 skilling for rich people and 1 skilling for farmers (cf the price of a horse was 20 skilling). Steam ship traffic started in 1867.
