The KAYS of Cobhouse, Bury

by Peter Cameron
The Kays of Cobhouse, Bury is a new book on Kay family history. Peter is our Membership Secretary and is a descendant of the Kays of Cobhouse. It is a story of a main line Kay family which farmed in the Irwell valley to the north of Bury for over 500 years from the 14th to the 19th century, and is the result of nine years of research. References have been found to the family being established at Cobhouse as early as 1340 and likely pre 1340 origins are considered. The genealogy of the family from 1588 onwards has been traced in a continuous line of descent down the centuries to 1866. By then, the old house had fallen into disrepair and the last Kay family to occupy the property had moved away. The house was subsequently rebuilt and is still a working farm today, but Kays have never lived there since. Much new information has come to light which has not been published before and many branch lines will have ensued. A large genealogical chart is included and it is hoped that this may help other Kay researchers to find if they also have a link into this family.
