Death of Mr. Herbert Randall
Mr. Herbert Frederick Walter RANDALL, the respected head of the firm of H. Randall and Sons, automobile engineers and motor coach proprietors, of Bonchurch, passed away at his home, Rose Cottage, Lower Bonchurch, on Monday afternoon, after about three weeks illness.
He was 67 years of age and leaves a widow and five sons, with whom much sympathy will be felt.
Mr. RANDALL had been in business in Ventnor and Bonchurch for about fourty years. In his earlier days he was for some time the driver of a pair-horse mail van running between Shoreham and London, and could tell many an interesting story of experiences on the road.
The present successful business which he had built up from small beginnings with the help of his sons, grew out of a posting establishment, formerly run by the late Mr. Charles COOK at the Spring Hill Mews, which was an adjunct to Mr. COOK's farming interests at Lowtherville. This business had originated in 1840.
Mr. RANDALL was a horse cab driver for a long time, and then came the Great War, in which he saw service in the R.A.F.
After this, horse traffic gradually gave way to the motor, and how successful was Mr. RANDALL's change-over to this form of locomotion, with the aid of his growing sons, is well-known to most local residents, who have frequently commented upon the enterprise of this firm and its rapid rise and development.
Mr. RANDALL was for several years licensee of the Bonchurch Tap, and he served the village for a long time as a member of the Parish Council.
A man of quiet old-world courtesy - a typical coachman of the old school - with a pleasant word for everybody, Mr. RANDALL was held in universal esteem and regret at his passing will be general.
The funeral takes place this (Friday) afternoon at St. Boniface Church at 2.30.
