Unplaced Stidhams*

Following are heads of Stidham* family lines who have not been authoritatively documented as descendants of Timen Stiddem. Although most are no doubt direct descendants of Timen Stiddem (or the Scottish immigrant, John Steedman), they will be listed as unplaced until positive proof of their ancestry is found. Many were African American slaves or descendants of slaves who took the Stidham* surname. Pvt. James M. Steadham a Confederate soldier from Alabama who died in a Federal prison in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1865 during the Civil War.

Although there is no evidence that James Adam [445f] Steadham is the son of John [294a] Stidham, he was placed here as the most logical of several options and to provide a "home" for the data. He was living 1850 in Villa Rica, Carroll Co., Georgia; 1860 in Talladega, Talladega Co., Alabama; 1870-1880 in Fulton Co., Georgia; and 1900 in Cleburne Co., Alabama.
John Steadham of Early Co., Georgia. There are two John Steadhams listed in the 1860 census. The age for neither one is listed in the census enumeration. He may be John [294a] Steadham.

A DNA study for a descendant indicates William J. Steadham is a direct descendant of Samuel [166] Stidham or his father, Adam [102] Stedham

Enoch Stidham (c1799) and Lucretia of Bartholomew Co., Indiana. He was born in North Carolina, no doubt a grandson of Samuel [166] Stidham.
Henry [490a] Stidum (c1816) of Hancock and Ohio Counties, Kentucky. He moved to Perry Co., Indiana. We believe Henry [490a] Stidum's father was Isaac [299] Stidham Another possible son of Isaac [299] Stidham, Isaac [492] Stidham, went to Hancock Co., Kentucky (ref. 1850 census) and changed his surname to Stidum.
Virginia May Walls Stidham of Indianapolis.

Daniel Stidham (c1900) of Perry Co., Kentucky. His son, William, married Mary C. Stidham.
Harry Stidham (1896-1928) and Mary Wireman of Sharondale, Pike Co., Kentucky. Killed in a coal mining accident in Huddy, Pike Co., Kentucky (died in nearby Williamson, Mingo Co., West Virginia). On his death certificate, his father was listed as John Stidham from Virginia.
Henry [490a] Stidum (c1816) of Hancock and Ohio Counties, Kentucky. He moved to Perry Co., Indiana. We believe Henry [490a] Stidum's father was Isaac [299] Stidham Another possible son of Isaac [299] Stidham, Isaac [492] Stidham, went to Hancock Co., Kentucky (ref. 1850 census) and changed his surname to Stidum.
James H. Stidham (1921-1944) of Breathitt Co., Kentucky. He died in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in the Phillipines during World War II.
Joseph Stidham (c1858) and Mahala Florence Huston of Lewis Co., Kentucky. He was either born in Missouri or Virginia. After Joseph's death, Mahala went to Scioto Co., Ohio.
Judith [284] Stidham (c1789) and Nathan Lewis (c1784) of Carter Co., Ky. We are pretty sure she was the daughter of Samuel [166] Stidham of Ashe Co., North Carolina, but have no proof.
Lige Stidham of Perry Co., Kentucky
Loraine Tillett Stidham of Gerrard Co., Kentucky. Her husband's name is unknown.
Mary "Polly" Stidham (1826) and Morgan Davidson of Clay Co., Kentucky. We think Mary Polly was the daughter of Adam [286] and Abagail Osborne Stidham, but we have no proof.
Martha Sophronia Stidham and John David Profitt of Montgomery Co., Kentucky. We believe Martha is Martha [823] Stidham.
Nancy Jane or Polly Stidham and Lige Day. Their son, John Riley Day, married Martha Jane [733] Stidham, a granddaughter of David [281] Stidham. Could this Polly Stidham Day be a daughter of David [281] Stidham?
Rosa C. Stidam of Breathitt Co., Kentucky.
Samuel Steddum I (c1763) and Mary Ayers of Fleming Co.., Kentucky. His descendants went to Texas.
Sarah [3195b] Stidham (1885) of Harlan Co., Kentucky. She was living with Nancy J. [1534] Stidham Jenkins, and next door to Martha J. [3195a] Stidham Jenkins at the time of the 1900 census. We belive she may have been Martha's sister and Nancy's niece.
Sarah Ellen Stidham and David "Doc" Sammons of Louisa, Lawrence Co., Kentucky. Her mother was Rebecca.
Sarah Jane Stidham and William Maggard of Leslie Co., Kentucky. Her parents were John Stidham and Jane Wells. Her father may have been John [689] Stidham.
Siller Stidham and Willie Baker of Breathitt Co., Kentucky. She was probably Priscilla [2916] Stidham.
Susannie Stidham and Francis M. Marlowe of Rowan Co., Kentucky. Probably a daughter of Henry [726] Stidham, but no proof. Marriage in Rowan Co., Kentucky, and marriage to a brother of Harrison Marlow who married Henry Stidham's daughter, Ida Belle [1593a] Stidham, are strong circumstantial evidence.

Philip Stedham (1824) and Annie of Baltimore, Maryland. Parents born in Maryland. In the 1880 census, Philip is identified as a mulatto.
Richard B. Stidham (1841) and Annie of Baltimore, Maryland. Probably the son of Jonas [219] Stidham. Richard and Jonas' son, James, were both listed in the 1880 and 1900 Baltimore census, and they are close in age.

Frank and Nora Stidham (c1872) of Kearney Co., Nebraska. Frank was born in Illlinois, his parents in Pennsylvania. Was he a son of Edward Frank [379c] Stidham?
James H. Steddum (1837) and Ida of Lancaster Co., Nebraska. James was born in Kenutcky, and Ida in Illinois. Was James the grandson of Samuel Steddum I of Fleming Co., Kentucky? Or, the son or brother of Henry Stidum of Perry Co., Indiana?"
G. K. Steadham. According to his son, Ed O Steadham's death certificate, G. K. was born in Nebraska.

Alex and Hannah Stidum (c1814) of Burlington, New Jersey. Their son, Alfred, was a noted portrait artist in Philadelphia. His father was probably the free black, James Stidham (Stidum) of Kent Co., Maryland
Daniel Stedams (1805) and Elizabeth of Downe Township, Cumberland Co., New Jersey. His brother was Hiram Stedams below. They may have been Germans.
Edward Steadham (1832) and Hannah of Newton, Sussex Co., New Jersey
Hannah Stidhams of Cape May, New Jersey. She may have been the widow of Peter [156] Stedham.
Hannah Stiddam and Abraham Lake of Atlantic City, New Jersey

John T. [378] Stidham (c1854) of Cumberland Co., New Jersey. He is most likely the son of Peter [263] Stidham of Delaware. The 1910 census indicates his father was born in Pennsylvania, but the 1930 census has him born in Switzerland.

Mary Steedom (c1750-1760) and Josiah Bogue of Jones Co., North Carolina. Probably the sister of Sarah Stedham below who married Josiah Bogue's brother. They are probably daughters of Anders (Andrew) [66a] Stedham, although we have no proof.
Nancy Stidham (c1830) and Nathaniel Stamper of Ashe Co., North Carolina. Probably a granddaughter of Samuel [166] Stidham.
Sarah Stedham (c1745-1755) and Mark Bogue of Perquimans Co., North Carolina
Sarah [405a] Stidham and George Grimsley of Watauga Co., North Carolina. Based on circumstantial evidence, we are fairly sure Sarah was the daughter of Allen Bartlett [285] Stidham, but we lack postivie proof.

Charlie and Eliza Steadham. Charlie was a slave "owned" by Sallie Steadham. Their daughter, Betsey, was a Seminole Freedman.
Cleve Steddum (1887) and Mary of Oklahoma Co., Oklahoma. No doubt a descendant of Samuel Steddum of Flemning Co., Kentucky.
Francis Marion Stidham (23 Apr 1854-3 Mar 1898) of Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. He lived at Sallisaw where he operated a store. His widow, Permelia, was listed in the 1900 Federal census of Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. (He was incorrectly identified as #2074 in The Descendants of Dr. Timothy Stidham, but that Francis Marion was too young.) We believe he was the son of William Riley [427b] Stidham and Dorothy Webb.
George Washington (Stidham) Stidman of Hanna, McIntosh Co., Indian Territory. George Washington had three families, including children with Nora ____? and Bertha Weeks. The Unplaced Emma Stidham (who married Isaac Rice) was one of his descendatns.
Grover Steddum (1887) and Mary of Blaine Co., Oklahoma. No doubt a descendant of Samuel Steddum of Flemning Co., Kentucky.
Hammet and Oma Stidham (1896) of Haskell Co., Oklahoma. His father was born in Oklahoma, and his mother in Arkansas. May have been son of Zachariah [2077] Stidham.

Joe and Polly Stidham (c1868) of Indian Territory (Creek and Seminole Freedman) Joe Stidham was listed on the Dawes rolls as a Creek citizen, formerly "owned by George Stidham". Polly Stidham was listed on the Dawes rolls as the "wife of George Stidham, a Seminole citizen." This may have been Judge George W. [487] Stidham.

Thomas "Tom" Stidham (c1861) of McIntosch Co., Oklahoma (Creek Freedman) Tom's mother, Amanda Quabner, was listed on the Dawes Roll as former slave of "Judge Stidham." He was probably a son of Judge George W. [487] Stidham.
Thomas Stidham and Susie Chukos of the Seminole Nation Thomas was a Creek citizen. This may have been Thomas [1023] Stidham, a son of Judge George W. [487] Stidham.
William H. Stidham (1880) and Pauline of Lincoln Co., Oklahoma. We believe he was William [1107] Stidham.
William Roy Stidham (1920-2004) of Kent, Washington. He was a World War II veteran, from Grady Co., Oklahoma. He was the son of the William H. Stidham above.

Pennsylvania

Alexander Stidum of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, an African American. He was the father of Alfred B. Stidham, below. His father may have been the free black, James Stidham (Stidum) of Kent Co., Maryland.
Alfred B. Stidum of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, an African American. He was a noted portrait artist. His father was Alex (above), was born in Maryland.
Edward [379c] Stidham and Rosina Gilfert (Gilfeert), of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We believe he was a son of Jacob [264] Stidham, but we have no positive proof. Jacob's family lived in Tamaqua, Schulykill Co., Pennsylvania, same place where Rosina Gilfert was born and died.
Frederick Stedem (1861) and Adelaide of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were Germans. His father was Anton Stedem, born 1827 in Trier, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.
Elizabeth Boyd Stedham of Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. Her husband was probably related to Richard Stedham, and Englishman, who owned land in Lancaster County.
George Steddam, a veteran of the War of 1812, Pennsylvania Militia.
John Henderson [314a] Stidham (1809) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A DNA test on one of John Henderson [314a] Stidham's descendants prove he is a direct descendant of Timen [1] Stiddem. His parents may have been John [136] Stidham and Abagail Springer of Christiana Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware. John [136] was listed in the 1820 census as John Stidham Sr., yet he has no known son named John. In the census enumeration, there is an unknown male child under 10 years of age. John Henderson [314a] fits this age grouping.
Mary Stedham and Andrew Wilson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were married in Philadelphia in 1796.
Richard Stedham (1718, Wheatley,Southampton, England) and Ann Kenison (Kempson), of Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.
Samuel [265a] Stidham (c1816) of Beaver Co. Pennsylvania. His father may have been the "Samuel Stidim" residing by himself in Beaver Co., Pennsylvania at the time of the 1810 census. Samuel [265a] was probably a grandson of Zachariah [78] Stedham who was in Beaver Co., Pennsylvania in 1800 and 1810.
William Stedham (1765-1784) of East Whiteland, Chester Co., Pennsylvania
William Stedham (1789-1814), a veteran of the War of 1812. According to his military records, he was born in New York, enlisted in Philadlephia.
William H. and Emily Stidham. Their daughter reportedly married into the Stidham family of Beaver Co., Pennsyylvania.
