ST. EWE WAR MEMORIAL -

ALL SAINTS, VILLAGE CHURCH FOR THE PARISH...

which was originally built of Pentewan stone in a Norman cruciform shape; the tower & spire was added in the 14th century, and a south aisle in the 15th. It was extensively remodeled in 1881, when the Gothic rood screen was saved and re-installed in its rightful place.

Despite these photos being taken in the middle of February, notice the flowers. Spring flowering comes early! And this is the famous St. Ewe camellia, in front of the 14th century entrance. The celtic cross is the War Memorial.

"The most poignant reminder of the past is in the gardeners toilet or thunderbox room. Here written into the plaster on the day that World
War I broke out is a message "Come ye not here to sleep or slumber"
and underneath it all the garden staff signed their a names. One must remember that the next time you see many of these names is on the
War Memorial at St. Ewe and it is genuinely felt that the restoration
is in some small way dedicated to their memory as the last people
to work the Gardens in its heyday."

Light Infantry 10th Bn., died 24-25 Oct 1917, buried at Dunhallow ADS Cemetery, Belgium. Son of Edward and Charlotte Bawden, Lower Sticker, St. Austell.

C.E. Ball, Polsue
 Private Charlie Ball, age 27, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry 7th Bn., died 2 April 1918, buried Bouchoir New British Cemetery, Somme, France. Son of Bartholomew and Emma Ball, Polsue Farm, Grampound Rd, Tregony. Was a gardener at Heligan. Photo of him in the Heligan Gardens book.

P. Carhart, Pengrugla
Private Percy Carhart, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry 1st Bn., died 30 Oct. 1917, listed on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Son of Mrs. E. Carhart, Scarce-Water-Hill, St. Stephen, St. Austell. Was a gardener at Heligan. Photo of him in the Heligan Gardens book.

F. Doddridge, Tregenna
Frederick Doddridge, Stoker First Class, served on HMS Goliath, died 13 May 1915, listed on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.

F. Gaved, Polgooth
Lance Corporal Gaved, Royal Army Service Corp. 648 MT Coy., died 7 Dec 1918, buried in Pemba Cemetery, Mozambique.

G. Perry, Tregenna Hill

E. Parsons, Polgooth

S. Trevena, Lower Sticker
Private Samuel Steven Trevena, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry 10th Bn., died 28 July 1916, listed on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

L. Warne, Trelewack
Sapper Leonard Warne, Royal Engineers, Signal Service Training Centre, died 21 April 1920, buried in Lostwithiel Cemetery (St. Bartholomew’s). He was a gardener at Heligan.

 

E. D. BABER, St. EWE
Possibly Edouard Baber, born 1894 in France, died 26 Oct 1914, but not listed
on the Commonwealth War Graves site, so may have enlisted with French forces. His parents, Alfred and Mary Ann (Snelling) were from Somerset and Devon.

A. R. DIPPLE, St. EWE

G. W. LAITY, St. EWE
Possibly Seaman W.M. Laity, Royal Navy Reserve, serving on HMS Hyacinth, died 19 March 1917, buried Morogoro Cemetery, Tanzania.
