Workhouse - built in 1839 for 300 inmates, it served St. Austell, St. Blazey, Charlestown, Creed, St. Dennis, St. Ewe, Fowey, Golant, Gorran, Grampound, Holmbush, Mevagissey, St. Mewan, St. Michael Caerhayes, Par, Roche, St. Stephen in Brannel, and Treverbyn. There were riots when plans for a workhouse were made public - but the promises of good treatment and lower "poor rates" eventually succeeded in its acceptance. By 1849, the poor rates had increased 50%.

The population varied; in the 1841 census, there were 133 inmates; in 1851, 143; in 1861, 154; reaching a high of 219 in 1871 - which shows that overcrowding was not a problem.
