SOUTH POLGOOTH TIN MINE - and ruined engine house. Note the "clay tip" in the distance. The "Great Polgooth" tin mine, a conglomeration of many older mines, had, at its height, 1,200 men working 50 shafts. It was the richest mine in the world at that time. By 1861, it employed 100.
