TEWINGTON COURT ROLLS - 1790 through 1793

These are transcriptions of a copy of the Original court rolls, held in the archives of the Cornwall Record Office,which have not been placed online before this, as far as we know. These give details about who served in various offices, persons who died and their heirs, and how Copy-hold and Free hold properties within the Manor were dealt with.

Manor of Tewington - 4 Feb 1790
Trenyaren: John Roberts > Chas. Rickard > Sampson Roberts

To Wit - A special Court of and for the said Manor held for his Royal Highness George Augustus Frederick Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall and so forth at the Market House in Saint Austell in the County of Cornwall .. there and for the said Manor the fourth day of February in the thirtieth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth. And in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety before Nicholas CREWS, Gentleman, Deputy Steward of the said Manor.

At this Court came John ROBERTS, one of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor, and did Surrender into the Hands of the said Duke of Cornwall Lord of the said Manor, All that one messuage or Dwelling house and Garden with the appurtenances situate standing lying and being in the Village of TRENYAREN in the Parish of Saint Austell in the said County being part and parcel of the Customary Lands of the said Manor and now in the possession of Charles RICKARD Upon this Intention nevertheless and under this Condition that Sampson ROBERTS may have and take the Premises aforesaid with the appurtenances to him the said Sampson ROBERTS his Heirs and Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor And thereupon at the Same Court came the said Sampson ROBERTS in his proper person and did take of the said Lord of the said Manor by the Hands of the said Deputy Steward All and singular the said Premises with the appurtenances To Have And To Hold all and singular the Premises aforesaid with the appurtenances unto the said Sampson ROBERTS his Heirs and Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor by the Rents and Services thereof first due and of right accustomed And he gave to the Lord of the said Manor as a Fine according to the ancient Acknowledgment six pence and did his Fealty And he finds Pledges as well for payment of the Rent as for Reparations and other Services to be done and performed to wit John TALLACK and John WEBB, two of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor And thereupon he is admitted Tenant thereof GIVEN under my hand and Seal the Day and Year abovesaid.

To Wit - A special Court of and for the said Manor held for his Royal Highness George Augustus Frederick Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall and so forth at the Market House in Saint Austell in the County of Cornwall and within the said Manor the twenty fifth day of March in the thirtieth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth. And in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety before Nicholas CREWS, Gentleman, Deputy Steward of the said Manor.

At this Court came Benjamin HIGMAN, (Son and Customary Heir of John HIGMAN deceased) one of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor, and did Surrender into the Hands of the said Duke of Cornwall Lord of the said Manor, All that one messuage or Dwelling house and Garden with the appurtenances situate standing lying and being in the Village of TRENYAREN in the Parish of Saint Austell in the said County late in the possession of Philip WILLIAMS Tinner and now in the possession of Jonah TERRY Mariner AND ALSO All that one other Messuage or Dwelling House with the appurtenances situate standing and being in the Village of Trenyaron aforesaid in the Parish of Saint Austell aforesaid in the County of Cornwall late in the possession of Humphrey TREVARTHEN Yeoman deceased and now in the possession of JOHN AXFORD Yeoman AND ALSO All that one other messuage and Dwelling house with the appurtenances situate standing and being in the Village of Trenyarton aforesaid in the parish of Saint Austell aforesaid in the said County late in the possession of Mary COCK Widow All which said several and respective Properties are part and parcel of the Customary Lands of the said Manor UPON this intention nevertheless and under this Condition that William GICHARD may have and take the several and respective Premises aforesaid and respective appurtenances to him the said William Gichard his Heirs and Assigns may for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor AND thereupon at the same Court came the said William Gichard in his proper person and did take of the said Lord of the said Manor by the Hands of the said Deputy Steward All and singular the said several and respective Premises with their several and respective appurtenances TO HAVE AND TO HOLD all and singular the several appurtenances unto the said William Gichard his Heirs and Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor by the several Rents and Services thereof first due and of right accustomed And he gave to the Lord of the said Manor as a Fine according to the ancient Acknowledgment twelve pence and did his Fealty And he finds Pledges as well for payment of the Rent as for Reparations and other Services to be done and performed to wit John WEBB and Joseph ROSEVEARE, two of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor And thereupon he is admitted Tenant thereof GIVEN under my hand and Seal the Day and Year abovesaid.

ALSO We present William WHITFORD to be Reeve of this Manor for the present year and William WEBB and Thomas BOND to be Viewers of the Reparations of the said Manor for the same year.

ALSO We present John WEBB and Thomas LANGDON to be Bread weighers and ale tasters within the said Manor for this year.

ALSO We present William WEBB and Thomas BOND to be Viewers of his Royal Highness's Woods within this Manor and Charles PEARCE to be Tithingman on this year.

ALSO We present the Death of Mary VARCOE Widow who dyed Tenant of a Tenement in Trenarren, and that John VARCOE is her Heir and is admitted Tenant thereof.

ALSO We present the Death of John ROBERTS who dyed Tenant of a Tenement in Trenarren, and that James ROBERTS is admitted Tenant in his Stead.

FIRST We present all the ancient Customs of this Manor to be good and laudable.

ALSO We present the Death of Ann HIGMAN, who dyed Tenant of a Tenement in Trenarren, parcel of this Manor, and that Mr. George TALLACK, her Son,, is entitled to the same as customary Heir of Mr. John TALLACK, his late deceased Father, and he is admitted and taken Tenant for the same.

ALSO We present the Death of Frances PAPPIN, Widow, who dyed Tenant of a Tenement in Trenarren, and that Hugh PAPPIN, her Son, is entitled to the same as her customary Heir, and he is admitted and taken Tenant for the same.

ALSO We present that William CARPENTER and others in the Month of February last did find two Pieces of Oak Timber and one Piece of Elm Timber a Wreck on the Beach under Merthen in the Parish of Saint Austell within the Royalties of this Manor, which have been appraised at five shillings, and belong to the Lord of this Manor, allowing two shillings and sixpence for salvage.

To Wit - A special Court of and for the said Manor held for his Royal Highness George Augustus Frederick Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall and so forth at the Market House in Saint Austell in the County of Cornwall and within the said Manor the twenty second day of April in the thirty thirdyear of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third, by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth. And in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety three before Nicholas CREWS, Gentleman, Deputy Steward of the said Manor.

At this Court came Henry LAMBE Esquire, one of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor, and did Surrender into the Hands of the said Duke of Cornwall Lord of the said Manor, All that one Cellar commonly called or known by the Name of the Driving Cellar with the appurtenances, situate standing and being in the Cliff near Ropehaven in the Parish of Saint Austell in the said County late in the possession of Joseph THOMAS Fisherman and now of Thomas LANGDON Yeoman being part and parcel of the Customary Lands of the said Manor UPON this intention nevertheless and under this Condition that the said Thomas LANGDON may have and take the Premises aforesaid with the appurtenances to him the said Thomas LANGDON his Heirs and Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor AND thereupon at the same Court came the said Thomas Langdon in his proper person and did take of the said Lord of the said Manor by the Hands of the said Deputy Steward All and singular the said Premises with the said appurtenances TO HAVE AND TO HOLD all and singular the premises aforesaid with the appurtenances unto the said Thomas Langdon his Heirs and Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor by the Rents Suits and Services thereof first due and of right accustomed And he gave to the Lord of the said Manor as a Fine according to the ancient Acknowledgment six pence and did his Fealty And he finds Pledges as well for payment of the Rent as for Reparations and other Services to be done and performed to wit George TALLACK and Francis BOND, two of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor And thereupon he is admitted Tenant thereof GIVEN under my hand and Seal the Day and Year abovesaid.

And in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety three before Nicholas CREWS, Gentleman, Deputy Steward of the said Manor.

At this Court came Samuel HEXT, Esquire, one of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor, and did Surrender into the Hands of the said Duke of Cornwall Lord of the said Manor, All those Messuages and Tenements with the appurtenances called Merthen otherwise Merther and Porth, parcel of the Customary Lands of the said Manor situate lying and being in the Parish of Saint Austell in the county aforesaid UPON this intention nevertheless and under this Condition that Thomas CARLYON Esquire may have and take the Premises aforesaid with the appurtenances to him the said Thomas Carlyon his Heirs and Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor AND thereupon at the same Court came the said Thomas Carlyon in his proper person and did take of the said Lord of the said Manor by the Hands of the said Deputy Steward All and singular the said Premises with the appurtenances unto the said Thomas Carlyon his Heirs and Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor by the Rents of fifteen shillings for the aforesaid premises called Merthen otherwise Merther and six pence for the other premises called Porth and the Suits and Services thereof first due and of right accustomed And he gave to the Lord of the said Manor as a Fine according to the ancient Acknowledgment eight pence and did his Fealty And he finds Pledges as well for payment of the Rent as for Reparations and other Services to be done and performed to wit Henry Lambe Esquire and John Pearce, Gentleman, two of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor And thereupon he is admitted Tenant thereof GIVEN under my hand and Seal the Day and Year abovesaid.

At this Court came Henry LAMBE Esquire, one of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor, and did surrender into the Hands of the said Duke of Cornwall, Lord of the said Manor, All those four Fields or Closes of Land with the House Orchard and Garden thereunto belonging called Pensenton Robin with the appurtenances within the Parish of Saint Austell in the said County and now late in the possession of the said Henry LAMBE his Tenant or Tenants being part and parcel of the Customary Lands of the said Manor UPON this Intention nevertheless and under this Condition that Thomas CARLYON Esquire may have and take the Premises aforesaid with the appurtenances to him the said Thomas Carlyon his Heirs and Assigns for ever according to the Custom of the said Manor And thereupon at the same Court came the said Thomas CARLYON in his proper Person and did take of the said Lord of the said Manor by the Hands of the said Deputy Steward, All and singular the said Premises with the appurtenances TO HAVE AND TO HOLD all the singular the Premises aforesaid with the appurtenances unto the said Thomas CARLYON his Heirs and Assigns forever according to the Custom of the said Manor by the Rents Suits & Services thereof first due and of right accustomed And he gave to the Lord of the said Manor as a Fine according to the ancient Acknowledgment eight pence and did his Fealty And he finds Pledges as well for Payment of the Rent as for Reparations and other Services to be done and performed, to wit, George TALLACK and John PEARCE, two of the Customary Tenants of the said Manor And thereupon he is admitted Tenant thereof Given under my Hand and Seal the Day and Year abovesaid.

ALSO We present the Death of Thomas CARLYON CLERK, who was one of the Free Tenants of this Manor, and who also held several Customary Tenements, parcels of this Manor, And that a Relief became due to the Lord on his Death in respect of his being a Free Tenant, and also one Best Beast in respect of his Customary Tenures But the Sum to be paid for the Relief we know not and therefore refer to the Steward's Books And that Thomas Carlyon Esquire is his eldest Son and Heir and that ____ Carlyon, his Widow, is entitled to the Customary Tenements for her Life, by the Custom of this Manor.

ALSO [the Same statement regarding Samuel Hext, Esq., surrendering the messuages and tenements of Merthen and Merther and Porth was again shown, word for word, as was the statement regarding Henry Lambe surrendering the property at Pensenton Robin.]

ALSO We present that John HICKS of the Parish of Saint Austell Fisherman did in January last take up and save a small Tub of Geneva as a Wreck within this Manor, which has been appraised at twelve shillings and that six shillings, one Moiety thereof, belongs to his Royal Highness Lord of the Manor and the other Moiety thereof belongs to the Finder for Salvage.
