An Analysis of Saskatchewan Placenames:
This compilation of placenames came about to understand something of the evolution of placenames in Saskatchewan. Search Saskatchewan Placenames is a listing which tries to entail all Saskatchewan placenames, encompassing all the early online SWP maps, the historical maps on the Canadian maps website as well as other sources. The Saskachewan One Room Schoolhouse Project comprises a tribute to the school districts of Saskatchwan. To assist in tracing early heritage placenames these Canadian maps are also online.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s when transportation was via walking or horse using trails and no roads, travel was difficult. When hauling grain to elevators with horse and wagon, approximately seven miles was considered to be a convenient distance. This would allow one trip a day. Placenames, and settlements arose approximately every 4-6 miles to accomodate educational, spiritual, and community services and utilities to the early homesteaders. Naming of communities could be a railroad siding, an elevator, and/or the Post Office. The following analysis follows up various sources to determine if the location changed name, or if two names were used at the same location for example naming of the Post Office and the Railway station. As time progressed some smaller communities became encompassed into a larger community for example Nutana, Riversdale, and Sutherland amalgamated into the city of Saskatoon.

With the help of others, it has been a pleasure to have enabled the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Maps to come online. Many families who grow up in Saskatchewan have had the latest Wheat Pool Map Calendar on a wall in the kitchen. It is very rewarding to have been able to have access to the rare historical 1924-25, 1947-48, 1950-51, 1952-53, 1984 Sask Wheat Pool Maps and to share these maps online. In 1927, Archie P.O. was established at 34-52-24-W3. This P.O. of Archie operated as Le Clair from 1920-1927. The name of Paradise Hill was not used at the above location as of 1928 so Le Clair changed names to Paradise Hill in 1928. ¹

National Archives Archivia Net, Post Offices and Postmasters lists it as Bredenbury 1890-1964 at Sec.35, Twp.22, R.1, W2 ¹ Saskatchewan Health lists Brendenbury. Bill Barry lists two sources and two people it could be named after.A. E. Bredin, a land agent for the Manitoba and North Western Railway and William Henry Barneby. One with the extra "n" and the other without. The Town of Bredenbury web site spells the name Bredenbury.

Buckland ⁸ is located at 32-48-27-W2 whereas Crutwell ⁸ is located at 49-1-W3. Switch this annotation for the 1924 SWP ³ map. ¹²

Buffalo Head

Buffalo Head Tsp 5-6 Rge 17 W 2 area of Radville, Souris Valley Source: Dominion of Canada Map Shewing Mounted Police Stations & Patrols Throughout the Northwest Territories During the Year 1888. This is a reprint of the original for the RCMP anniversary.³⁰ In 1909 a post office established near this location: Wallindale location was Sec.36, Tsp 6, Rge 18, W2 Wallindale later named Radville Sec.12, Tsp 6, Rge 18, W2 . Souris Valley earliest post office location was Sec.28, Tsp 5, Rge 17, W2 (1907)¹ A second use of the placename Buffalo Head: Buffalo Head was used as a post office from 1912-1927 at Sec.28, Twp.17, R.29, W3 in the Kindersley area. This post office changed names in 1927 to Horsham and was located at NE 1/4 Sec.11, Twp.17, R.29, W3 ¹

Buffalo River post office located in the North Battleford Federal Electoral District existing from 1926-1929 P.O. ¹ NORTH BATTLEFORD Federal Electoral District 1924 - 1947 consisted of that portion of the Province of Saskatchewan lying north of North Saskatchewan river included in ranges eight (8) to twenty-eight (28) inclusive west of the third meridian, together with those portions of townships thirty-nine (39), forty (40) and forty-one (41) in range seven (7) west of the third meridian lying west of North Saskatchewan river.²⁷

Post office distribution list May 10, 1941 Closed send matter to Ile a la Crosse mines1914 shows unnamed HBCo post at the location of present day Buffalo Narrows. To the west of this point the lake was called Buffalo Lake with Buffalo River entering the lake from the west almost directly west of the HBCo post. On present maps Buffalo Lake is called Peter Pond Lake. Waghorn's Guide from this period list it as a post office but give the location as unsurveyed." ¹²

In the Dominion Land Grants database there is an Angus Brabant listed as firstly, at portion of lot north-east of North Easterly Road Limit. Northwest Territories at a Settlement of Fort Smith and secondly, portion of lot south-west of South Westerly Road Limit. Northwest Territories ¹³ "

Caesarville: located in the Moose Jaw Federal Electoral District and existed as a post office from 1911-1914 ¹ Located T21 R21 W3 close to location of Lancer Sec.20, Twp.21, R.21, W3; perhaps 1 mile north and 1 mile east (hard to tell from map with no section grids). This is from a map called "Catholic Immigration Map of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta" by Stovel Co with a map date of 1912. The RR line through Lancer was not yet built. ¹² Caesarville Post office archive list open 1911-06-01 1914-01-31 Jas. Further, the CNR was formed in 1918 by joining Canadian Government Railways and Canadian Northern Railways. In 1919 the CNT took over Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. Goodwater

There are several Verbal reports that the village of GOODWATER was known as Juell prior to 1911. It was believed that the"surveyors of CNR were, in fact, responsible for the renaming of the town of Juell to Goodwater. The great puffing steam engines of the day had to replenish their supply of water at regular intervals, from huge water towers. They were very pleased when water was found here at 12 feet--good and abundant." It states that the rail line was completed by 1911. Is there any record or data proving this statement, which is quoted from page 8 of: the R.M. of Lomond #37 HistoryBook, Prairie Gold ISBN 0-88925-182-7 printed by Friesen Printers Altona, MB 1980 ⁶There were a few homesteaders living near here under the name Juell NE 16 5 13 W2 Part Section Township Range Meridian Names: George L Juell NE 20 5 13 W2 Names: John Juell Jr NW 20 5 13 W2 Names: Chris Ceverian Juell SE 20 5 13 W2 Names: Sigurd John K Juell John B Savery SW 20 5 13 W2 Names: John Peter Ledwig Juell²² Also from Archivia Net... The post office records show no change of name of a post office in this regards.¹ In the book What's In A Name edited by E.T. Russell, it states that there is a resident, Mrs. Colin Belt of Alingly, born in a 1916 hospital and the placename then was "Jewell"...This book also states the same story regarding finding water for the CNR steam engines here when it was hard to locate anyplace nearby. There is no record of any Juell, or Jewell in the Saskatchewan Atlas 1969 edition. Goodwater is listed at 21-5-13-W2 Also an interesting statement by the family of Albert & Edith Lyons. It states, " The Lyons family sought greenerpastures and migrated further west to Jeweltown, North West Territories,later known as Goodwater. They took up a homestead south of the newsettlement of Jeweltown and built their home in 1906. " Apparently the family migrated from Bossevain, Manitoba. (reference page 563 Prairie Gold,Friesen Printers, 1980)⁶ Larry Walton has a map titled "Geological Map of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba"(Reissued 1914, with minor geological additions)¹⁶ . No other dates are indicated as to when the basic information is from. It indicates Juell was located in T5 R13 W2 in the same location as Goodwater is at present.The CNR Employee time table 1925 lists it as Goodwater.¹²

Graburn P.O. established at Sec.14, Twp.9, R.1, W4 - 1895-07-01 Alberta and Saskatchewan did not become provinces with the current boundaries until 1905. Between 1882-1905, the Western boundary for the provisional district of Assiniboia and Saskatchewan extended to Range 10, West of the 4th meridian. Therefore Graburn was established in the provisional district of Assiniboia, NWT, and from 1905-1912 was Graburn, Alberta. The P.O. was in the Federal Electoral District of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan which cannot be explained due to the fact it is West of the 4th meridian which became the Sk-Ab boundary in 1905, so the Federal Electoral District should have been Assiniboia West in 1895, and a Federal Electoral District of Alberta after 1905. Saskatchewan became a province in 1905. Manitoba was a postage stamp province est. 1870 and its boundaries were extended 1881into a larger 'postage stamp' size. See the 1895 map Grand Rapids was part of the Provisional District, NWT in 1900. It wasn't until 1912 that Manitoba extended northward to the District of Keewatin, NWT. Therefore, the current province for Grand Rapids, is Manitoba, and the initial Grand Rapids P.O. was established in the Provisional District of Saskatchewan, NWT."

Grandin

The first post master was J. Ouellette...Joseph Ouellette and Joseph Ouellette Jr proved up at 44-2-W3 Reverend J. V. Fourmond was the second post master?and there was a Jos Vital Fourmond (Priest) homesteaded at 44-1-W3.¹³ ¹ Grandin saw the changing of placename of Stobart to Duck Lake which is the nearest neighboring placename. Grandin is noted on maps which are dated approximately 1890 and 1894. One map does not show the Regina-Saskatoon-Prince Albert line, the other does; but does not give any town names. Neither map has township or range information on them. The name Grandin is not terribly clear on either map and it is not clear where it is located. It appears on the maps almost directly east of Carlton (Sec.15, Twp.45, R.4, W3 - 1890-02-01) SE Sec.27, Twp.44, R.4 - W3 on the South Saskatchewan river. There appears to be part of a circle at that point. ¹² Further inspection of Post Office records held at National Archives show a 1889 notice of the discontinuance of the N.W.T. Grandin and Wingard Mail Service. Wingard P.O. located at Sec.6, Twp.46, R.3, W3 - 1888-12-01; Sec.32, Twp.45, R.3, W3 ;SW Sec.4, Twp.46, R.3, W3 - 1947-04-16; SW 1/4 Sec.33, Twp.45, R.3, W3 - 1952-04-03. Correspondence on the matter of the Grandin and Stobart Service. Where Stobart is located at Sec.33, Twp.43 - 1879-05-01. As well as 1897 application for the re-opening of the post office at Grandin. An interesting note are two files which refer to the name 'St. Laurent - Grandin' for this post office: Inspectors reports and general file for the post officeat St. Laurent-Grandin 1929-1936, and Divisional inspector's report for St. Laurent Grandin, Sask. 1936-1969 ²⁶" There also is an address given for Grandin, Sask ²⁶ "LOUIS PARENTEAU, GRANDIN, SASK. RE HIS HALFBREED SCRIP. " which also probably refers to Current map 1:250000 sheet 73B shows St. Laurent-Grandin in T45A R1 W3 on road 225 at the ferry crossing east of Duck Lake on the South Saskatchewan river.¹²

Lippentott

P.O. of Lippentott existed from 1887-06-01 1917-06-09 at 6-11-29-W1 according to the Manitoba Boundaries Extension Act, 1881, range 29 West of the first meridian was inclusive of Manitoba. The Manitoba Act of 1870 declared the western border of Manitoba as the meridian of ninety-nine degrees west longitude or approximately range 12 west of the first meridian. The following anomaly was noted by Larry Walton.¹². The P.O. ¹of Lippentott should not be in the Federal Electoral District of Assiniboia as it commences at the south-east corner of the province of Saskatchewan, which is defined as Range 30, west of the first meridian according to the Manitoba Boundaries Extension Act, 1881 . Likewise Lippentott should not be listed as part of Saskatchewan.

The first one would appear to put it NE of Saskatoon and open 1892-02-01 to 1897-09-30 I have a couple of maps that are suppose to be from 1895 and 1896 and the only thing shown in that area is Saskatchewan which is listed in the post office archive list as Sec.2, Twp.38, R.4 W3 - 1884-11-01 and is listed as open 1184-11-01 to 1891-03-31 Two maps from 1912 and 1914 show Llewellyn probably in the Twp.22, R.3 W2 .( no twp. or range information) but is just north of Bangor (15-21-3-W2) The reference to the Saltcoats Federal Electoral District must refer to the second location as it did not exist in the 1892 to 1897 period¹² To follow up with some more notes...from 1907-1914 "the electoral district of Saltcoats, bounded as follows: Commencing at the east boundary of the province of Saskatchewan, where it is intersected by the Qu'Appelle river; thence northerly along the said east boundary of the province of Saskatchewan to the north boundary of the TSP 24 ; thence westerly along the north boundary of the 24th TSP to the meridian between the 16 - 17th ranges west of the 2nd meridian; thence southerly along the said meridian between the 16-17th ranges west of the 2nd meridian to the Qu'Appelle river; thence along the said Qu'Appelle river down stream to the point of commencement."²² William Hunter and Mrs Hunter were postmasters from 1892-1897 and Gwilym Lewis postmaster from 1903-1915. There were 71 homesteaders who proved up on their claim named William Hunter of which.SW 4 37 4 W3 belonged to one William Hunter. The name Gwilym Lewis is not as common, showing SW 2 22 3 W2 and SE 34 21 4 W2 as western land grants under this name.¹, ¹³ There is a Llewellyn cemetery located North-East quarter, Section 4, Township 38, Range 4, West of 3rd ²³

In further research in 1894, National Archives holds these two records: Notice of the arrangements made for mail service between Llewellyn and Saskatoon NWT, and in 1897a file for the Notice of the Closing of the post office at Llewellyn and the discontinuance of the Llewellyn and Saskatoon mail service.²⁶ As well there are three subsequent records of 1906-1927 held for the second Llewellyn location: The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company, and the Canadian National Railways - Right-of-Way - Purchase of Right-of-Way Through the North East Quarter of Section 16, Township 21, Range 3, West of the Second Meridian, Saskatchewan, From Elias Lewarton, of Llewellyn, Saskatchewan Through the North East Quarter of Section 12, Township 21, Range 3, West of the Second Meridian, Saskatchewan, From John R. Jenkins, of Llewellyn, Saskatchewan and Through the South West Quarter of Section 7, Township 21, Range 3, West of the Second Meridian, Saskatchewan, From D.S. Williams, of Llewellyn, Saskatchewan.²⁶ In the Dominion Land Grants database 7 21 3 W2 shows ownership by The Great North West Central Ry Coy; NE 12 21 3 W2 John Rees Jenkins; NE 16 21 3 W2 Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Co as well as by NE 16 21 3 W2 Elias Lewarton ¹³

Depending on the map one looks at, there is a river either starting at the lake or just south of it called the ""Little Red River"". This river is shown as entering the North Saskatchewan near Prince Albert, so I presume it is the present day Spruce River. Rand McNally 1924 shows the river as the ""Little Red River"", but the lake is the Waskeseu. One map by George Philip & Son Ltd./The London Geographical Institute and titled the The Harmsworth Universal Atlas (from about 1905) and a booklet called Canada Descriptive Atlas and issued by the Minister of Immigration and Colonization in 1923; give the name as Red Deer Lake. Of course all three of the above maps also call present day Stockwell Lake at Macrorie as Red Deer Lake as well. They also have a Red Deer Creek joining the lake and the South Saskatchewan ²⁹"

Stirling; the 1901 census for the Stirling area includes Tsp 18,19,20-Rge 19-W2 and Tsp 19-Rge 20-W2. Stirling does not exist anymore, it is close to present day place name of Victoria Plains 11-18-19-W2 and Albatross 22-18-20-W2 north of Regina. ²⁸.

Strasbourg

Strasburg T24 R23 W2 Near Long Lake which is now Last Mountain Lake **** Probably why the railway station and post office were originally called "Strasbourgh Station" Source: Dominion of Canada Map Shewing Mounted Police Stations & Patrols Throughout the Northwest Territories During the Year 1888. This is a reprint of the original for the RCMP anniversary.³⁰ In the Moose Jaw - Lake Centre region this placename underwent several name changes. The post office named Strassburg Station opened in 1905 at Sec.25, Twp.24, R.22; and changed names in 1919 to Strasbourg Station; again changed names to Strasbourg in 1956. ¹ The local history/family biography book Between Long Lake and Last Mountain by Bulyea, Duval, Strasbourg Strasbourg, Bulyea, Duval History Book Committee lists both Strassburg and Strasbourg.
From 1886 to 1905 there was another placename of similar name. Strassburg and was located at Sec.12, Twp.24, R.22, W2 (Assiniboia West)

Gilbert - Tessin, Saskatchewan - If postmaster may act as municipal secretary treasurer RG13 , Justice , Series A-2 , Volume 183 File : 1914-40 ²⁶" Tessier is located at 36-32-11-W3 as of 1906 and subsequently at 1-33-11-W3 ¹ Found no reference to a postmaster named H.F. Gilbert in the P.O. database ¹ , nor a Western Land Grant patent awarded to H.F. Gilbert to further substantiate whether Tessin, Sk could be Tessier, Sk.¹³. Tessier would be very close in transcribing handwriting. Reference submitted by Larry Walton ¹².

The Gap

Fred Shupe, justice of the peace - The Gap, Saskatchewan RG13 , Justice , Series A-2 , Volume 180 File : 1913-889 ²⁶. The Gap shows up as a P.O. existing 1906-1916 at 24-24-10-W5 which would place it in Alberta." There has been found a few geophysical placenames called "The Gap". The first being"The Gap" naming a valley northwest of Ceylon. The CNR railway appears to follow it into Ceylon. The Harmsworth Universal Atlas, Nos I63-I64, Central Canada, George Philip & Son Ltd., The London Geographical Institute No date on pages, but was told they were from a 1905 Atlas This atlas shows "The Gap" as being just to the east and north of Fort Walsh. Current topographical map "Hungerford Lakes" sheet 72 F/12 show it as being the area that seperates the two parts of Cypress Hills Provincial Park. There is a break in the Cypress Hills and "The Gap" describes this physical feature. Located in T7-T8 R28 W3 This was forwarded by Larry Walton ¹² The RM of The Gap #39 is headquartered in Ceylon, Sk. The P.O. named "The Gap" is located in Alberta at Sec. 24, Twp. 24, R. 10, W5M. ¹

Wartime 26-16-W3 appears twice on the 1924 Rand McNally map. One location is on the railline between Greenan which is to the west and Elrose to the east. The other location is on a separate rail line between Lille to the South and Mackmat to the North.
