Joseph Howse

- Carol Vulliamy

Joseph Howse- 1774- 1852; Original Howse Pioneer from England

Joseph was an educated, articulate youth born in Cirencester, England.

He apprenticed as a bookseller and stationer; a literate man in demand.

He knew Latin, French, Italian and Cree; a linguistic scholar for sure

To a youth with dreams of adventure and infinite possibilities- a lure.

Howse was hired by the Hudsons Bay Company, a popular choice.

"Adventurous, tough and intelligent"- uttered a historian voice.

Master of HBC posts and searching for an inland trading route-

Howse continued his journey regardless of Piegan threats so acute.

Conflict, turmoil and violence between rivals eventually took its toll

Howse decided to retire and move to Cirencester so the stories unfold.

Howse renewed his gift of literacy and correspondence, records say

He led the life of a gentleman, scholar and author- corresponding his way.

Eminent Continental leaders from Rome to Berlin sought his knowledge

Universities and Royal Geographical Society requests, he acknowledged.

The Church Missionary Society financed the print of his Cree book-

Revised editions titled Grammar of the Cree language- a closer look.

Our illustrious pioneer led a prominent life on two continents.

Grammar of the Cree Language remains his English compliment.

-Howse Peak, Howse Pass and Howse River his Canadian fame.

We appreciate Joseph Howse bringing glory and respect to our name.
