Family Obituaries Online Since 2003

Since early 2003, both local Fort Wayne, Indiana newspapers have been using Legacy.com to store online obituaries. Some funeral homes post obituaries on their web sites, some newspapers leave them online for 30 days, others up to a year. Copies are then available for around $2.95. As a result these links are only active as long the obituary source permits, but may allow you to pay to receive archived newspaper obituaries. A few years ago I started linking the photos when available, but if they move or delete them they will no longer appear. Let me know if you find broken links, or other sources for these links.

December 14, 2011 Terry L. ZOLMAN, 64, a distant cousin, senior pastor of Merriam Christian Chapel Church who also have a Facebook page. From his Memory page as a missionary Terry had friends as far away as Spain and New Zealand. A Notes to the Zolman's page encouraged the family before his passing. The church has a long history in my ZEIGLER and ZUMBRUN families. Philip Zeigler was a pioneer minister of the Merriam Church, brother to my Joseph ZEIGLER, Philip is buried in the older part of the cemetery on the hill. Terry is related through my ZUMBRUN families. January 18, 2011, Nicholas L. HEINY, 96, not a direct relative, but a cousin of a cousin. I memorialized his passing on the Allen County Genealogical Society of Indiana Facebook page "In Memoriam Nick Heiny former ACGSI President 1986-1989 prominent local businessman passes away January 18, 2011." I assume his family owning local "mom and pop" style grocery stores explains Nicholas' cousin John HEINY married to Helen FOLLIS, her sister Nellie FOLLIS married to Paul REINKENSMEIER who also owned a grocery store, and brother Chester FOLLIS who owned a grocery store for a while in early 20th century Fort Wayne, Indiana, children of Milo FOLLIS. The HEINY's are all buried in the Catholic Cemetery Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.

June 15, 2010, Roy DeWhitt PRATER, 38, a 6th cousin-in-law through his wife Carol Joann JAGGER, related through the ZUMBRUN families, died April 6, 1972 in the Vietnam War. In March 2010 his son Dennis was notified Roy's remains had been discovered and would be returned for proper burial in Blue River Cemetery, Whitley County, Indiana. He had been honored locally in 1976, June 2, 1979 at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Dayton, Ohio and in 1997 at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. Frank Gray of the Journal Gazette had his story "Downed pilot’s return ‘bittersweet’ for son." June 17, 2010 "Procession for Airman to Arrive in Whitley." June 18, 2010 "Fallen Hero Comes Home 38 Years Later." June 20, 2010 "Farewell to Dad, at last" covers his honoring by hundreds returning his final remains to the Blue River Cemetery near Columbia City, Whitley County, Indiana. He was honored with Prater Hall Building 1213 in 1979 on the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He has a 1997 memorial in Section 34 Site 680-A at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia shown on Find-A-Grave. I added some comments and links to his story on the Footnote.com Vietnam Wall.

May 18, 2010 William I. FOLLAS, 85, 3rd cousin once removed of the Delphos, Ohio branch. Burial in Paulding Memorial Cemetery, Paulding, Ohio. 3 generations back in the mid 1800's the family changed the spelling from "is" to "as".
