George Crider was born about 1820 in Virginia. As a young man he came to Harlan County and by 1840 had settled on Clover Fork and married Elizabeth, believed to be the daughter of Andrew and Anna Kelly Bailey.

Their first son, Andrew, was born about 1840. In 1861, he married Ann Elizabeth, daughter of John and Eliza Sergent Ball. They had Luke; Mary Eliza who married a Farley; Louisa who died as a child; Eliza Jane who married a Boggs; George W. who married Mary Kirk and was killed at Evarts in 1931; Emily; and Sarah. Sometime after Sarah's birth, Ann Elizabeth died and Andrew married second to Jane Smith. Andrew and Jane had Jonathan who married Dora Ball and Samuel who married Ella Farley.

George and Elizabeth's second child was John L. Crider. He was born about 1841 and, in 1862, married Nancy Ann, daughter of Solomon and Susan Ball Pope. John and Nancy had Carlo B. who married Sarah Elizabeth Sergent; Andrew `Jack' who never married; Susan Elizabeth; Emily who married Jeremiah Fee; Mary; Sarah; John; Joana; George who married Burton Hensley's daughter Malicia; Albert; Solomon who married Malicia Fee; and Druze who married a Hensley.

Also believed to be a child of George and Elizabeth Bailey Crider is Polly Ann Crider. She was born about 1843 and in 1866 married A. D. Robbins. Elizabeth died at or shortly after her birth. Also listed sometimes as a daughter of George and Elizabeth is the seven year old girl Elizabeth listed in George Crider's 1850 household. Her parentage is not all certain and it is though that she may be the Elizabeth Smith/Lundy that married George's first son by his second wife.

After his first wife's death, George married Susannah Harris. Susannah was born about 1819 and was the daughter of Nathan and Judith Shumate Harris. George and Susannah had seven children before her death about 1855.

Their oldest son was Nathan Harris Crider, born about 1844. In 1864 he married Elizabeth. Although her name is given as Lundy at their marriage, the death records of several of their children give her maiden name as Smith and she is believed to be the half sister of the Granville Smith who married Leannah Creech and second to Elizabeth Lee. Nathan and Elizabeth had Jonathan who with his wife Jane moved to Arkansas; Mary who married James A. Huff; Carter who married Mary Day; Green who married Elizabeth Huff; William A. who married Nannie Day; Martha who married Jerry Burgin; Barnes who married Susie Wynn; Granville Smith who married Narcissus Ball; and Basil who married Narcissus' sister Ollie.

After Nathan, George and Susannah had a daughter Judith. Judith was apparently a favorite of her maternal grandmother for whom she was named as shortly before Judith's 1862 marriage to Irvin Ball, her grandmother Judith Shumate Harris deeded all her property and possessions to Judith Crider in return for her caring for her the remainder of her life.

George and Susannah's next child was William T., born about 1848. In 1873, he married Martha, daughter of William and Fanny Noe Irvin. They had Sarah, George, Louisa and possibly others.

Next born was Luke J. who married first to Margaret Napier and second to Annie Branson daughter of Hezekiah and Nancy Farmer Branson. By his first wife Luke had Hezekiah who married Margaret Day; George; Nancy who married an Osborne; and John. By his second wife Luke had Cornelia, Samuel, Nathan, Manerva, Lula, Louisa, Minnie, Rosa and Mary Lela.

After Luke came Preston who was born about 1851 and died sometime between 1860 and 1870. He was followed by George T. who married Susan, daughter of William and Elizabeth Turner. George T. and Susan Crider had Mary E. who married John D. Farmer; Polk who married Delia Fee; Ben H.; and Green who married Cora McCarty. They may have had other children as well.

The last child of George and his second wife was Jane. She was born Jan. 17, 1855, probably not long before her mother's death. In 1870, Jane married Mathias Cornett.

After Susannah's death, George married for a third time to Mary daughter of Henry and Mary Mark Farley. They had five children. First were Emily born about 1857, Speed born about 1858 and died young and Fannie born about 1864. Their fifth child Sarah was born about 1871.

Their fourth child and only surviving son was Jonathan Anderson `Ance' Crider, born Nov. 19, 1868. In 1890, he married Sarah Clydia Lyttle, daughter of Arthur and Mary Lyttle. Ance Crider died March 16, 1940 at Bardo and is buried at Stanfill on Catron's Creek. He and Clydia had five children: John D.; Lily; Cumile; Noah who married Hamilton and Melvina Christian Shope's daughter Hattie; and Mossie who married Amos Shope.
