Clem NANTZ was born about 1795 in Tennessee. Nothing is known at this time about his first wife who apparently died about 1840 after bearing him eight children. On the 28th of March in 1842, in Harlan County, Clem married Rebecca LEDINGTON born in the early 1820's. It is not known if LEDINGTON is Rebecca's maiden name or if she had been married to a LEDINGTON previously [see note below]. She did have two children, Catherine and Jeremiah, prior to her marriage to Clem NANTZ, both of whom went by the LEDINGTON name as adults although they are listed in the 1850 household by the NANTZ name.
Clem Nantz died between the taking of the 1850 census and June of 1853 when an order regarding his estate appears in the Harlan County Court Orders. [Harlan County Vital Returns Deaths for 1852 lists Clem Nance, age 65, b Lee Co VA, married, farmer, res Harlan, as having died 6 Nov 1852 in Harlan "from stab"]. Altogether, Clem NANTZ had twelve children.
