Moody County was formed in 1873 from Minnehaha County. It is surrounded by Minnehaha County, South Dakota; Lake County, South Dakota; Brookings County, South Dakota; and Pipestone County, Minnesota. It was named for Gideon Curtis Moody, the first U S Senator from South Dakota. The county seat is Flandreau.
