AMMONS-MILLER- I
was told by Bev Kenobbie that she thought Ida Mary Ammons Miller was buried in the Presho cemetery. I tried
to look under the “M’s” for Miller but got an error
message. Could you let me know if Ida Mary is buried
there (in 1910?) and send a link to her tombstone if
possible? Vince Gratzer

BRINTNALL - Interested
in Lyman Co. information on my husband's great-uncle who
homesteaded in Lyman Co about 1911. His
name was Franklin Brintnall who traveled there with his
brother Ralph and homesteaded 160 acres each. Ralph
returned to MN while Frank remained to sell off property
and was to return home with their money. They never saw
Frank again. Instead, he was attacked by horse thieves,
robbed, killed and thrown down a well (1912?). I would
like to be able to either verify this or look for other
explanations. I cannot find a death record for him
anywhere. Are there newspaper articles or sheriff's
records available to you? I would appreciate any help
or hints you could give me. Virginia Mielke

CHAPMAN -
My name is Michael Bailey. I am looking for information
on Philo Chapman. We have some World War Materials on
him here in Angleton, TX. The only Philo on the WWI list
I can fine is one from Lyman County South, Dakota.
There was a bit of migration from the Dakotas to Texas
in the Early 20th Century. The one other clue I have is
a note addressed to Philo (in France) from Elu Chapman.
Any help would be great. This may be a picture of him.
Thanks, Bailey "[email protected]"<[email protected]>

CLAYTON - Thanks to your work I have
finally found the resting place of my ggg
grandfather! The stone says C. C. Clayton but you
were able to identify him as "Comadore C. Clayton"
even though you used the spelling that has been
handed down in our family -- Commodore. The
1870 Census lists him as illiterate, (which is
probably at least partially responsible for the
multiple spellings). I descend through his daughter
Myra Elvira Clayton, whose resting place I still
seek. I am also intrigued by her sister, Mary
Clayton, whom family tradition insists was "the
first white woman West of the Missouri."
And supposedly, her life story is told in the
1911 Gene Stratton-Porter novel The Harvester!
Any insight to either of these family traditions?
What scant information I have found on her indicates
she lived Northeast of Iona. Whether that was the
spot where she first crossed the Missouri, I cannot
say. The book, Iona Heritage, has a page about
Commodore Clayton! Any help is appreciated.

I
am the great grandson of William H. Gammon and grandson
of Carl Gammon who lived in Lyman County near Oacoma
from early 1900 to approximately 1930. My mother, Ruth,
was born on the farm near Oacoma in 1913.
I see that the name Gammon
appears several times in Lyman County History Book

like to acquire a copy of the the information in your

HALL - Hello, Was going
through my various records on the history of our
home and came upon your website:
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~sdlyman/Families/Hall/hall.slinde.part1.htmIf there are family members who would be
interested, this is a

of the original
house occupied by Jabez and Lyman Sr. I also have
considerable history of land exchanges of the
original farm; if interested, they might contact me.
On reading the site more carefully, I find their
line descends from Cap'n Jabez son, Gershom. This
page is from the records of
Edward Knurow at the
Berkshire Atheneum. Scott farm is property
which Gershom acquired, from his father. It is the
only cellar hole on the property, so I assume it was
the Gershom homesite. All notations on 2nd file are

HENRICHSEN -My
grandparents (Maurice and Retta Henrichsen) homesteaded in Stony Butte Township,
Lyman County from about 1907-1918. Their first baby, Henry, was born August
1908 and died February 1909. I'm wondering if there might be a newspaper entry
about his death? They took the baby to Retta's hometown of Cherokee, Iowa for
burial. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Georgetta (Henrichsen) Hickey,

KRUG/PETERSEN -
I think I have another connection to Lyman County, with
my Father's side of the family. His mother was a Krug
and I believe they had a homestead there in Lyman
County, South Dakota in the early 1900's. Her name was
Anna E. (Krug) Petersen. Yes there is that 3 E's again.
Strange how this name is coming up with this Parkening
connection to Matschuck. Also with Whitaker
connection, that is a relation to Krug. Father -
Elmer Petersen. His parents - Louis Petersen and Anna E.
Krug; Mother - Helen Pfeiffer Petersen. Her
parents - Helena Matschuck Pfeiffer and Henry Pfeiffer.

MATSCHUCK/PFEIFFER
I was searching for any Matschuck information on Google
and your information came up linked with Parkening. This
is all a connection to my Grandmother, Helena Matschuck
Pfeiffer. She lived in Elkhorn, NE, until her husband
died and then moved to Omaha.
I have visited
a Swanson Funeral Home to get Parkening information and
have a copy of a Mary Parkening. Is there some
relationship between your Carl Parkening and Mary who is
to be a 1/2 sister to my Grandmother, Helena Matschuck
Pfeiffer? My cousins and I recently met in Omaha to go
work together to get a better understanding of our
ancestors. I have been working on this for many years
alone and that is when, with my Mother and Aunt we went
to several of the Funeral Homes looking for information
on Matschuck and Pfeiffer. I believe that some
Parkenings came over with the Matschuck's from Germany.
Am
really unsure of the relationship and would love some
additional information. Any help or insight would be
helpful. Thank you ! Sandra Petersen Schmieg; Mother -

MCGUIGAN - I
wish to thank you on the information regarding the
McGuigan family. The people in question were Francis
(Called Frank) & Celilna (Robillard) McGuigan. It was
most useful and indeed those names are of the same
family I’m researching. A King man also married one of
the Robillard girls that were also related to the
McGuigans. I'm most interested in my grandmother, Mary
(McMahon) Callahan, who was born in Union County, SD in
May of 1893. Her mother died a few hours later after
giving birth so she was raised by her grandparents,
Frank and Celine (Robillard) McGuigan. The
McGuigans moved to Lyman County outside of
Kennebec
and only lived in there a short time, about 1903
to 1909. It was still a pretty wide open and wooly
area. She said one night her grandmother and some of
the other children were home when several Indians on
horseback came near the ranch and began firing guns off
into the air. Grandma Callahan said her grandmother hid
everyone in a storm cellar outside and stood guard with
a gun until they Indians rode off. I have not
been able to find any
land records as to where the ranch may have been
located. They next
moved to Lawrence County outside of Spearfish and began
a ranch there. Would like to hear from anyone
knowing about this family. Thank you, Kim Callahan
I’m sending a
picture of my great-grandparent's ranch outside
Kennebec
in circa 1907, in the event someone may recognize it.

SMITH/NORTON
- Hello. I found your name and email on the Jones and
Lyman County SD website. I hope that perhaps you can
help me. My
Great-Grandmother, Mrs. Laura Marion (Norton) Smith
homesteaded in Jones County SD 1908; Black Hills
Meridian, Twp 2N, 29E, Section 20. Hers was a cash-entry
sale for 160 acres in the SE ¼. In 1911, her son
[my Grandfather] Lewis Alvin Smith also homesteaded on
three parcels in same T/R, section 27. By 1912, Lewis A.
Smith also seems to have taken land in Lyman County SD
: Twp 108N, Range 78 West, section 32. [Unless there
were two men of same name?] Laura’s widowed sister,
Bertha Norton, also homesteaded land in Jones County SD
, in 1914: 2N, 29E, parts of sections 5 and 6 Do
your sources tell you anything more about them? What is
the township NAME for this area? Could this possibly be
in Banner Twp? Is it near Draper SD? How would I go
about finding deeds, to learn when they sold the land,
and to whom they sold it? ANY further info would be
greatly appreciated. Darlene C. Joyce

THOMPSON/KAY - I have
been searching for information for a baby born to
Clarence D. Thompson and Blanche Miller KAY (Thompson)
in mid 1910 through early 1912. All I know is that
Clarence and Blanche (Blanch) may have lived on Edith &
Harry's place someplace near kennebec. They were
married on Sep 15, 1909. I don't know the sex but was
told they had a baby that died. I also know that C/B
Thompson left Kennebec and gave birth to another
daughter in late 1912 in Ewing, Nebraska. Can you
please assist me or direct me further?

THOMPSON -
I had family in Kennebeck from about 1905 through about
1912 that I am attempting to gather information on
including pictures, news articles, etc. Specifically, I
would like to gather information on the Methodist Church
where my grandmother was married. Her parents were
Charles W. & Anna Kay, grandma was Blanche Miller Kay,
and she married Clarence D. Thompson on Sep 15, 1909 in
Kenebec at the Methodist Church. I know her parents ran
a dry goods store up until about 1909 when Anna's mind
left her and they shut the store down. I am looking for
pics or articles about that store.
I know the 1910 census shows Clarence and Blanche
Thompson living on a rented farm of Edith & Harry (last
name unknown) and I know that it was in Rose Township T
104N and Range 76 W. they also had a "servant" (possibly
midwife) named Emma Dunken or Dinken maybe.
I also know that these two had their first child
while living on this farm and that the baby did not
live. (I don't know if the baby was full term, stillborn
or died after birth. Our family has no baby name at
all.
I also know that Clarence and Blanche left
Kennebec within a year and moved to Ewing Nebraska. I
have also heard there are several volumes of the History
of Lyman County in the library system someplace that may
contain info I am looking for. I have also been told
that a church from Kennebec was moved, possibly to 1880
town in Murdo. I am also searching for township or
plat maps of the period from 1905 through 1912, town
pics, etc.
I found a record on Clarence Thompson on your
Births in
Lyman/Brule Counties. The reference was CH Register
22 Nov 1923. If that is the birth
date, I don't see how it could be "My Clarence", but I
know that it was common to have data recorded long after
things happened, and there does not
appear to be any birth date, name, etc. listed. THOMPSON - I found a Clarence Thompson entry
dated 22 Nov 1923 regarding a baby girl. Would there be
any links or could you direct me further regarding the
following items:
Mar 23, 1909
Clarence D Thompson engaged to Blanche M KAY; Sep 15,
1909 Marriage of Clarence and Blanche; Mid 1910-late
1912 birth and death of baby, name if any unknown.

trying to research the death of our relatives
Gottlieb & Anna Barbara Zaugg. They both died
on February 19, 1927 and we found a picture of
their headstone in the Iona Cemetary with both
names listed. Your website on Lyman county
history is great, but we weren't able to locate
their names on the lists of obituaries that you
have loaded. I live in

Arizona, so we unfortunately will not be
able to visit the area any time soon. We find
it curious that these two died on the same day,
and are hoping you could help to provide some
insight as to what happened to them. We are
hopeful that there would have been some sort of
article in the local paper if there was an
accident of some sort that resulted in both of
their deaths. Please let me know if you can
help shed some light on this mystery. Thank
you! Brittany Farmer <[email protected]>
