ANDERSON Civil War Veteran-  I'm trying to track down the grave site of James W. Anderson, Co. E, 113th IL Vol. Infantry.  His pension index card lists his passing on   02 Dec 1915 at  Iona, Lyman County.  I figur he is buried at Iona Cemetery, and was seeking some confirmation on the Lyman Co. GENWEB site.  There are three entries of  interest:  "Uncle" Jimmie W. Anderson - died, 09 Dec 1915; "Uncle" Jimmie W. Anderson - cemetery pl.  What is "pl"?  The third entry was  James W Anderson - cemetery  Iona; I wonder if James and Uncle Jimmie are the same.  I'd be grateful for any assistance you can provide. Regards, Stephen Baker [email protected] Mar 03 2010
ANKUM, GERMANY - I'm working on my ancestors who have lived/do live in Ankum, Germany. Do you know where I can get a copy of the St Nicholas BDM records?   Thanks, Kris Melchert [email protected]  Feb 10, 2009
BARTHOLOW, CHASE, EASTLY, SOMERS, TILLOTSON - I contacted you quite awhile ago about copies of obituaries but I didn't get back to you. I noticed you have access to family histories in the Lyman County History Book. Especially interested in the TILLOTSON family, since that is where the other families descend from.
Thanking you in advance, Susan Audy  White River Jct., VT

BISEL/SULLIER/MOLASH -  My name is Harold LeRoy Bisel.  I am 80.  My father, Harold Willis Bisel's father, Benjamin Franklin Bisel married Ellen Sulier on July 4, 1896. (I believe there are two Ellens.) Grandma Ellen's father was Vincent.  Ben and Ellen farmed near the small town of Burtrum.  I also remember Aunt Anna, Ellen's sister.  who married Fred Heffron and lived to be 104 or 106. I noticed there is a connection to the Molash name with a Frank Engstrom (Grey Eagle, MN) who was related somehow to us, too.  We lived in the Grey Eagle, Minnesota area and many are buried there. I have some info on my family tree on the internet and you can go to:  Harold Bisel and link to the web site. Very interesting.  Don't know the connection yet but will keep digging.  Harold Bisel  982 Willow Grove Circle   Waite Park, MN  56387   <[email protected]    Aug 20 2009
BRICKMAN - When I started doing the Brickman family history the only information that I found about the babies came from Paul Olson, the caretaker of the Presho city cemetery.  He was such a great help, he went out of his way to help us.  The only thing that he had in his records was: 1 child d.April 17, 1909, age 2 years,  1 child  d. April 7, 1908, age 8 months. Later you sent an obit to me  that said, Brakeman's baby April 4, 1909. John Brakeman's (Brickman) eight month old baby boy died Monday after a short illness. The parents live eight miles southwest (Hilmoe).  Lyman County settler  April 17, 1909.I found out later one baby was named Theodore and one Robert. Both dates on the stone are the death dates. Was there an outbreak of some disease at that time ?  I never did find exact birth dates for the children. Hope this clears up the confusion on the dates. The picture of the headstone on the internet is very nice. Carmen Lamb   [email protected]    10 Feb 2008
BUXTON -  Hello Barbara,  Is it possible to get a copy of the page "Buxton, 487"?  Thanks for making the index to Winds of Change available.  Valerie Wattier  ReliSearcher <[email protected]>   Oct 27, 2009
CLEVIDENCE-CHURCH - I have been looking for documentation on L.E. Church.  I previously contacted Lyman County for birth information on Robert Edward Clevidence, who listed his birthplace as Lyman County, (Oacoma) November 14, 1885, on his Montana marriage certificate. He was my grandfather.  He had listed his parents as Lewis Edward Clevidence and Mary Church.  The only Lewis Edward was Mr. L.E. Church who was married to Mary Church (nee Clevidence).  The county office couldn't find a thing about Robert's birth. Sadly, I am at a dead end now.   Nancy   [email protected]  04 Oct, 2010

CABLE/KNIGHT - I am seeking information on Elwood Lincoln Cable and a Mrs. John Knight.  Elwood Cable was first married to my great-aunt, Cora Brownell Knight in Hudson, SD.  They had one daughter, Lelia.  Cora Cable died young at the age of 25 so Elwood may have married again.  I am also trying to find out if the Mrs. John Knight mentioned on your website may have been Christina Knight who also homesteaded in Hudson with her husband John.  Betty Knight Swisher  [email protected]   22 Aug  2009

COOPER/HUMPHREYS - Barbara, This site is fantastic! I have never come across more information on any other site! You have done an outstanding job. I have found information I was looking for on the J.B. or John Robert Cooper family, however I do need more information.  I am helping a man confirm a burial location for a J.B. or John Robert Cooper in Iowa. I am from Osceola Co. Iowa and it has recently been thought that this man was in this area and died here. Possibly buried in a country cemetery in an unmarked grave. This man was a soldier in the Battle of the Little Big Horn in Custer's Last Stand. From your website I believe I have found that his wife is Rachel Anne Humphreys, daughter of Fernando Cortez Humphreys who also resided in your area. The Cooper's had a daughter Flossefa Cooper. I found on your site that she married a Wm. Robertson. I believe  John & Rachel had a son also but don't know his name. Thanks for your time, Dianne Raveling, Sibley, IA      March 2009
The information I have is such: 1.) Oct. 1, 1903-Sibley Gazette-Harris News- Mr. Cooper, who was taken sick while here, passed away Thursday night (Sept. 24) The remains were laid to rest in the Fairview cemetery Saturday. His wife and children arrived here from their home in Dakota, Saturday morning, to pay tributes to their departed dead. 2,) Oct. 8, 1903-Osceola Co. Tribune-Harris News- Mrs. J.B. Cooper and children and her brother-in-law, Mr. G.W. Caldwell, arrived from Spencer, SD last Saturday morning, being called here by the death of Mrs. Cooper’s husband. Mr. Caldwell is a brother of Mrs. Stratton.  3.) October 1, 1903-Osceola Co. Tribune-Harris News-Robert Cooper of Lake Park came over Saturday and walked out to the Wm Johnson place.  On returning he became suddenly ill in the Blue Front Restaurant.  His illness was caused by being overheated, and having had a sunstroke before he was easily effected.  Dr. Cady was called and Mr. Cooper on reviving was taken to the hotel where he is at present. His father-in-law of Chamberlin, South Dakota arrived Tuesday and is taking care of him. His wife and children who are in South Dakota on a homestead which he had recently taken and where he was to join them in a short time have been sent for. There is little hope for his recovery.
Barbara, You may remember that I emailed you this past spring in regard to your Lyman Co. Website, which again is just fantastic!  Your friend Marlys contacted me and  she was so kind to go to the library to look for information for me. However she did not come up with anything. I am wondering how you can help me. Is there a way I can actually read these old newspapers on the internet? How can I read it?  Referred her to Mark  Aug 6 2009      Check Family histories section, too - barbara
COULL/WOODWARD/MCWHIRTER - My husband found the online history of Vivian this evening and I was certainly please to see it. My parents both grew up in Vivian and I spent much time there visiting my grandparents, Lloyd and Addie Coull.  My mother's parents were L.C. Woodward (of the snake story) and Edna Jean McWhirter.  The McWhirters came around 1906 and homesteaded north of town.   (my Mom died a year ago and would have gotten a chuckle out of the snake story). My dad's family didn't come until later, but Grandpa Coull had a barbershop in town.  Mom and Dad both graduated from Vivian High School and loved going the school reunions.  My brother Dennis worked a couple of summers at Dad's uncle Harold Smith's farm when he was around 14-15.  Anyway, we have fond memories of Vivian.  In any of your research of Vivian, so you recall a picture of the barbershop which was on Main Street?  The building is long gone, of course, and nobody seems to have a picture of it.  Dad Clayton Coull died in 2006 and Mom in 2008.  They loved telling stories of their years growing up there.  I had gone through the microfilm of the Vivian Wave a few years ago, and found it quite fascinating.  Thanks for your having this online. Pat (Coull) Engebretson  Belle Fourche, SD   [email protected]    Feb 26, 2009
DARLING/HULCE - I just read the History of Vivian on the rootsweb site (FYI, the link to it from this page is broken), and saw a couple names of people I may be related to (my father, William Darling, was born in Vivian in 1935). My grandmother’s maiden name was Mabel Hulce, I saw that the article was contributed by a Sylvia Hulce, now of Arizona . Do you by chance have an email address for Sylvia? I don’t know when the article was written, so I don’t know if Sylvia is a contemporary or an ancestor. Thank you for any information you can provide.  Gary Darling      [email protected]   Feb 16, 2010
DUGGINS/HARRINGTON - Any chances of finding more information about  1.) Harrington, Rachel m/1858 Jessie Duggins and 2.) Harrington, Josephus hus of Catherine?  I'm a descendant of a Jessie Duggins who m. a Rachel Harris, they had a son "Josephus."  Lived in NE Iowa.  Wondering if there is any connection here as Jessie Duggins is not that common of a name.  Thanks.  EASTLING/ STANTON - I'm researching my kin, Elizabeth Eastling, nee Stanton who reportedly died in Bryant, Hamlin co. S.D. in April of 1900.  I see there is reference to an Eliz. FENENGA - In the 1920 Census of Iona Lyman South Dakota Teen and Birdella Fenenga were listed. There was a James S. Smith father-in-law living with them. He was born about 1837 in PA. He said his father was born in England and his Mother in PA.  My GGGrandfather was John Smith born in England. On the internet I found that a James Smith was born in Mercer Co PA in 1837 to Eliza Jane Clark and ??? Smith. Do you know if James S. Smith had a will or death certificate. I would like to find out who his father was. The Smith family arrived in Mercer Co PA about 1830-1831.  If you charge for a death certificate and the cost, please let me know. Any information would be helpful including the name of Birdella’s mother. Thank you.  Dorothea Silbert  <[email protected]>  December 17, 2010

GREENE - Looking for anything on Henry and Florence Greene family who live in Oacoma ca 1905-1910.  [email protected]   16 Feb 2010
GREFF - Barbara, I believe I am the one that provided you with the burial permits that are shown on the following link.  I heard recently from my mother (the granddaughter of Ida Greff) that she had heard back in the 1970s that the reason no graves can be found is that a road now runs over the plots.  Is that possible?  She would have heard  this from her mother who visited Chamberlain in 1972 (after having left in 1908) --- and her mother would have remembered the general location of the grave.  Also, do the burial permits that I provided      to  you look like others that you have seen for River View?    Mike <[email protected]>   August 2, 2009    https://sites.rootsweb.com/~sdlbgs/Tombstones/Riverview/greff.ida.infantson.htm

HALL - I just came across your web site https://sites.rootsweb.com/~sdlyman/Families/Hall/hall.slinde.part1.htm   While looking for information on my family and we appear to be related going way back. My relationship through your tree is through Dr. Isaac Hall -> son Isaac -> son Asa - son Isaac (1736) -> son Jacob (1773) -> son Edward (1813) -> son William (1844) -> son John (1875) -> son Lionel (1918) -> Kenneth (my dad) -> son Sean (me). Thanks for this information on your site it has cleared up some confusion as to who was Franic's parents. Thanks again!  Sean Hall  prossermustangs.com   24 Sep 2010
HALL - Hi,  My great-great-great... grandfather on my mother's side was Lyman Hall.  In case you were not aware Lyman Hall was the third signatory on the Declaration of Independence.  Shalom,   Daniel Baggett    [email protected]   Nov 29 2009
HALL -  I am a direct descendent of the William Hall that was the son of Gilbert Hall.  He came to Guilford and the Hall family is still in the Madison and Clinton, CT area and I am moving there from NC next month.  In my research the only thing we know about William's wife was that her name was Hester. I didn't even know he had a brother although of course my family was only concerned about our tree which goes back to William and then Gilbert.  Do you know anything else about Gilbert?  From William on down, I have the family history.  One more thing.   Doe anyone know what ship they came over on or when  they came? Thank you for any information you may have.  My mother was a Hall; a direct descendent, and I named my daughter with the middle name of Hall because they were such a wonderful family. Have a great day. HUBBARD/LACUE/LARUE - Is it possible that Anson Hubbard married Hannah LARUE instead of Lacue?  Am unable to find any Lacue's but have been able to put a family tree together with the name LaRue.  I really appreciate all the work you have done on these marriage records.  I have been able to add information to the family tree.  Anson is my husband's great-uncle.  Hannah was his 3rd wife.  (I haven't found wife no 1 yet). She was married to John Simon Larue 10 Dec 1884 in Whiteside County, Illinois (divorced).  Her maiden name was Griswold - dau of Jonathan Powell Griswold and Lehila Loretta Slater.  I found Anson and Hannah on the 1910 US Census Virgil Township, Lyman County, SD.  They applied for a homestead in Meath Park, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1919 and he became a naturalized citizen of Canada in 1925.  They were still living there in 1930.  I have no obits on either one of them.  I have some information on her five children by Larue.  My husband's grandfather was Benjamin Franiklin Hubbard, who also lived in Lyman County in 1910.  Thank You.  Darlene Hubbard  <[email protected] 04 Oct 2009

JAMESON/MIELDS   Hi, I’m tracking down some Jameson cousins, and after searching your website, I’m coming up empty handed.  I am specifically looking for a cemetery record or obituary for Samuel L. Jameson and his sister Olive Jameson.   I know it was after 1930 as both appear on the census there. Samuel’s wife Julia is buried in the St. Michael’s Cemetery, but there isn’t  a listing for Samuel.  Samuel and his family are on the census in Lyman County in 1920 and 1930.  His daughter Mamie married Fred Mields in Lyman county as well. Thanks, Angie. Angela Jameson <[email protected]>   15 Sep  2010

JANDREAU - I was born by the assistance of Ida Mallet, date April 11th, 1950, I do not have a birth certificate for whatever happened at the time.  I received my draft notice from Lyman county, but because I had no birth certificate I was not recognized as a veteran from Lyman county.  My parents were Lawrence Harold Jandreau and Alice LaRoche, I guess I was born during a storm somewhere between Presho and Cedar Creek (Bad Heart Allotment).  My grandmother raised me and her name was Gertrude (St. Pierre) Jandreau, my grandfathers name was Lawrence Jandreau Sr. Looking for help to get my birth certificate established, would appreciate any assistance you could provide.  Thank You    Respectfully,  Wm S.   LYON - My grandfather, Clyde Mortimer Lyon, and his wife Janette Olive Evans, married in 1905 in Lakota, N.D.  They were from Williamsburg, Iowa originally.  After the birth of my mother, Myrna Lyon Ferris in 1906,  they moved to McClure Township, 108 N R 78W, Sec. 19 where they proved up 160 acres as a homestead.  When they were packed and ready to head out to N.D. from Iowa, to my grandmother's surprise, they were joined by another wagon containing her in-laws the Mortimer W. Lyons along with Clyde's sister Vivian.  I have a picture of them outside the tar paper house they lived in there in S.D. all packed up to make their return trip back to Iowa. I would like to know how long they kept the land and when it was sold.  I was surprised that they still were listed as owners in 1911.  Sandra Allen  [email protected]  Feb 6, 2009

Maurice Menard dit Lafontaine   Good afternoon – I hope this email reaches you as you seem to have amassed quite a bit of information regarding the Menard/Mesnard family history.  I am researching my husband’s ancestral line and have connected him to Maurice Menard dit Lafontaine and Madeleine Couc dit Lafleur.  In one of the many things I have come across, it states in a record of his death that he was “sergent a demi-solde pour le Roi”, which literally seems to translate to mean ‘being a sergeant at half pay for the King’.  Was this a type of pension for services rendered?  I know he was a voyageur and interpreter but can’t connect him to the sergeant part.  Also I read somewhere that he ‘petitioned’ to have Madeleine granted the right to be at Fort Michilimackinac ’.  Why would he need permission – because she was of mixed blood? And would that be permission from the Governor, the Jesuits, the colonists?  Any information you have that would clarify those areas would be appreciated. Sincerely, Willi Johnston  [email protected]  April 7, 2009

MELLEGARD - Hi, Just wondering if you have any class pics of my dad or aunt. Harlan mellegard Sr. born in 1917 and his sister Eileen Mellegard. Don't have her date of birth or grad date but should be around 1930-1933.  Thanks, Harlan Mellegard Jr.  [email protected]
MENARD -  Hello! My grandfather's name is Normand Menard (Worcestor, MA) and he just recently gave me some info on our history and it's a little rough in terms of all the details it  seems to match up extremely well to the info on this page (http://sdgenweb.com/lyman/Families/mesnard.htm). I'm so interested to learn more about the native American heritage and what tribe exactly Miteouamigoukue is from. I know it says Algonquin, but i have heard that it spread far and that many different tribes spoke it.  Maurice Menard and Madeline Couc LaFleur's son Antoine Menard belongs to our tree.  I can't wait to tell my grandfather - this is a lot of info! Thank You,  Julie  Julie Andersen <[email protected]>       p.s. - can you please email me @ [email protected], it goes right to my phone and is easier to obtain, thanks!    August 7, 2009

MOELLER/DERRICKS/DIERCKS - I've just begun to trace our Moeller family tree. Karl Moeller (I have no date of birth or place and might have died in British Columbia) m. a woman named Wilhelmine PIESELMANN (died in the 1930's in Leduc County). They left Oacoma in 1902 and came to Alberta Canada.  They may have come by horse and wagon as I am told they brought cattle with them.  They had seven children: Mary  married a  BITTNER; Rose m. DERRICKS; Emma m. MORTON;  Annie m. ZIELSKE;  Fred, John and Karl (aka Charlie) Friedrec Wilhelm Moeller, b.1880 and d. July 19, 1941, m. Ameilia WERNER, b. Jan 25, 1903, d. 1960. I have found two land purchases in Oacoma back in the 1900's. I have been told there is a Moeller Cemetery at Oacoma and Derricks are also buried there. Not sure if they traveled together, but one of the Moeller daughters married a Derrick up here. Can you give me any help or ideas?   Thank you,  Darcie-Anna Moeller    [email protected]   03 Jan.  2008

MOLASH/BISEL My name is Harold LeRoy Bisel. Harold Bisel 982 Willow Grove Circle   Bisel <[email protected] August 20, 2009   Note: Search on Yahoo for Harold Bisel. MORRIS - My great-grandfather's name was Thomas C. Morris and he was Lyman County Sheriff from 1925-1927. He was married to Francis Call ( her full name was Calletski or  Calletsky ??)  Children: Bernard, Frances, Margaret, Regina, and Veronica ( my grandmother), b. Dec. 8, 1908, in Presho. The family moved to Kennebec S.D. and that is where my grandmother, Veronica, graduated from Kennebec High School. Questions: 1. Were Thos and Francis married in Lyman County, or in S. Dakota for that matter. ( She came from Chicago). 2. Where are they buried? Their ch. buried? (My grandmother and Francis died in California.) 3. Are there any family photos of Thomas in his Sheriff uniform?  4. I know Bernard committed a crime (something to do with a love triangle). Is there anything about this?  5. Margaret died at a young age due to T.B. Where is she buried? 6. What about Regina? Did she marry? Did she have children?? Thank you. I am grateful for your efforts.  Ernie Mannix <[email protected]  Oct 7, 2008
PEYTON - My grandparents were Henry L. Peyton and Adeline (Addie) Thom Peyton, who moved from Iowa to a farm in Lyman Co.  about 1908. At this time they had a son, Frederick William and a daughter, Ethel Maude. Ethel's twin, Esther Mae died in Iowa at seven months of age. They had a stillborn son in 1908 and he is buried in the Kennebec, Lyman Co., SD cemetery.  I believe they named him Leonard Leroy.   Henry was known as "Hank" and had a brother living in Kennebec, named Charlie, and I believe a married sister, who's husband ran a store. I think the surname was Meckling, perhaps Ira?  Another son, Robert Henry, was b.  February 20, 1915.(This was my father.) When he was about five years old the Peyton's moved into the town of Kennebec.  My father, known as Bob, or "Baldy" Peyton, was a barber in Presho for over 40 years, until his death in 1976. He is bur. in the Kennebec  cemetery along with his father, mother, baby brother, younger son, Robert Leroy, who died in 1943 at age of 4 years.  I would like to hear from anyone in the area who may remember the Peyton families. SERR - I am the great-grandson of Emil Bernard Serr and Sadie Eldora Grabinski, who lived in Kennebec, SD for many years.  I have been working on family history, and wanted to inquire about the possibility of having someone assist me with photographs of my great-grandfather's gravesite and headstone, as well as an infant son's gravesite  and headstone (if any). He is buried in Kennebec Cemetery, Block 15, Lot 1, Grave 1. His infant son, is buried in Block 15, Lot 1, Grave 5. They attended the Methodist Church, which was located behind their home. I am curious to know if that church has birth and/or death records for the infant son who passed away. We have no record of a name or date of birth, but know he was born and buried in Kennebec sometime between 1922 and 1927.   Help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.  Aaron Serr <[email protected]>  Nov 26, 2010

STRAUSS - My name is Marie and I have been researching the Strauss family from Iowa to S.D. and back to Iowa. On your web for the deaths in Lyman County you have listed a John W. Strauss date of death 11/27/1943. I requested a copy of his death certificate from vital records in Pierre. They claim not to have a death certificate or any record of his death. I know he lived in S.D. as he and some of his sibling owned land in Lyman County during 1911, I have the deeds and land plots. Is there any other information you can suggest? I would really like any information on the Strauss family. On the land deeds and plots John is listed as J. William Strauss. Could his death certificate be under that name? The family also had land in Custer, it was Medicine Man Ranch which the Boys Scouts now own, so I  know there is some history I am just at a wall.  Anything will be helpful at this point. Thank you for your time, Marie Strauss   [email protected]     February 28, 2009

WENDELBOE -  I am interested in the family of Russ (or Rassmusen) Wendelboe and Amanda Jensen, in particular the parentage   of Russ, who was father to Laurence Weldelboe b.21 June 1907 in Mitchell South Dakota, d. 1969 in Pascoe county, Florida. I   know Laurence was somehow related to Peter Christian Wendelboe b. 1849 in Silkeborg Denmark who married Hansine Rebecca   Rasmussen, as there was contact with many of their family, specifically son Michael Ostergard Wendelboe and Mary Serena Lund who lived in Alberta Canada, and their son Ernest Wendelboe who lived in Barons, near Lethbridge, Alberta Canada after leaving the United States. I have found Laurence's birth listed on the South Dakota vital statistics site, along with the Maurice Wendelboe + Marie Feton family, but do not know how they were related.
