Have you ever heard your voice on a recorder?

When I hear mine I cannot believe it is me. That’s not what it sounds like in my head! Once, when we were home on vacation, I was touring Reliance and Pauline Wagaman was sitting on her step so I stopped to say "hi." She didn’t say anything so I asked her if she knew who I was. She said, "My God, you look like Grandma Black and talk like Grandma Black, but you can’t be her … she’s dead!" Sometimes when I hear my voice I hear Grandma’s, too.  That is a good thing.

And speaking of voices, sometimes when I’m trying to give my name over the phone, for some reason, the person on the other end just cannot get it. For instance, when we lived in Duchesne, Utah I had to call a drugstore in Roosevelt for something. He asked my name and the conversation went like this: "Speck."; "Beck"? " No, Speck". "Peck" ? "No, Speck". "Oh … Steck". "NO … SPECK, LIKE IN FLY!!!" "Oh, he said, Fleck." Yes. I gave up. So my order came to Barbara Fleck. But, enough of that.

Now, as I get older I seem to have picked up the "heh, heh, heh" laugh of my aunt, Margie Fletcher. So, now when I hear it, I have a good memory of her.
