Mom's cat got locked in the trunk

Without going into a lot of detail, my mother and sister Karel, along with the family cat, met us in Las Vegas for a weekend, then went to Long Beach with us for a couple of week's visit, leaving their car in Vegas. As we got ready to leave, no cat. You know how the story goes- we hunted and hunted, called her and called her, and no cat. We hunted as long as we could before we had to leave because Ed had to return to work as soon as we got back. So we left the cat and mourned for the next few days, or however long it takes.
When we took them back to the car two weeks later and were standing around the cars doing the "goodbye" thing, some-one hears a very faint "mew." Then another one, and another. Now we are all looking frantically for the sound and zeroed in on the trunk of their car. Upon opening the trunk, what do we find but this poor emaciated cat and her kittens, almost too weak to "mew" one more time. The mother had gotten into the trunk while Mom and Karel were getting their things out to go to Vegas with us! She had apparently managed to survive by suckling herself.
One life down, eight more to go.......
