Fishing odds and ends

If you are new to the area, love to fish and not sure where to go to get lucky, look for the boats on the water. If there are 12-15 in a cluster, there is where you want to be. Just get out there right in the middle of them. On the other hand, if you just like to fish and don’t really care if you catch any fish or not, stay away from the groupings.
Sometimes a given situation causes us to think thoughts we wouldn’t necessarily think in the general course of the day, but as we were driving across the causeway Saturday morning it came to me that maybe when fishermen are standing up in their boats they should hold their rods a little higher …
Week before last the river was still solid ice and the ice fisher-men were everywhere. The recent warm spell had opened the river and we were sure spring was here, but that was not to be and we had another freeze. Last Tuesday evening as I was going home from work I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw one lone ice fisherman sitting on a bucket about 30-40 feet from shore. Scared me to death. If the ice had given away wouldn’t he have lost his bucket?
