What on earth is that smell

It was the early 1970s and I was working at the Goings Hotel in Gillette, Wyo. I worked the midnight to 8am shift. It was (and probably still is) down on a side street next to the train station.  Across the street was a bar, which has nothing to do with this little story other than the fact that drunks scare me to death, so I really didn't like being in the hotel all the dark scary hours of the night.
The men who worked on the trains stayed at the hotel and came and went all during the night which helped make the nights go faster somewhat.
Off to the side of the lobby was a caged area about 14x14. This is where freight was held (under lock and key) until it was retrieved or delivered. One night I noticed a slight odor which was only noticeable after the smoke from the guys' cigarettes or cigars cleared , but passed it off as many different things. The next night, however, the smell was considerably stronger.
As the night drug on and the train's pace slowed and the business across the street got quiet I had nothing to do but sit there and smell the smell ... and conjure up all sorts of spooky thoughts. I walked around trying to pinpoint where it was coming from and determined it was inside the cage.  But where?
My mind had a field day with that puzzle ... then finally determined that there had to be a body in one of the containers
. I called the police. They sniffed around, located the stinky container and had a wonderful laugh at the situation. Seems it was a 10-gallon can of bull semen!!! It should have been kept refrigerated. Ha.
