Bill almost overdosed
on my diet pills
Thinking of child-proof bottles, they didn't have such things when we were
raising our little ones. I was on a diet pill called Preludin (before it was
reclassified as an amphetamine) and had come into the house from hanging
clothes out to dry to find Bill (not yet two years old) had gotten into the
pills and showed me he had eaten however
many. I called the doctor who suggested he be allowed to sleep it off ... if he
could get to sleep. I was advised to do the warm soapy water thing to induce
vomiting, which did not. The child did not sleep it off by any means.
This little guy spent the entire day pacing, pulling on my hand and my skirt,
saying nothing more than "mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy for the next 12
hours. In the middle of the night I awoke very abruptly at 2am and went out into
the front room to see what the problem was and found the front door standing
open. I went outside to find Bill wandering down the street next to our house,
saying ... you got it ... "mommy, mommy, mom-
my." It was a couple of days before everything had worked its way out of his
system and he could sleep again.
Looking back I can't help but wonder why there wasn't more concern for this
child or why his stomach wasn't pumped? My God, I would think one Preludin alone
would be sufficient to overdose a two-year-old child. It's a miracle he even
lived through the ordeal.
