Bill’s funeral and celebrating his life as he would have

05/21/08 10:54 PM

Not a lot to think about these days with my mind full of our son Bill’s passing. I did want to talk about his funeral in case any of you had heard anything about us "crazy Specks" dancing at his funeral. It’s true; we did. Just as he would have done were he celebrating one of our lives.

Father Pearson kept us semi-respectful with his wonderful eulogy and prayers, then let us have our way. The sound of the bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace" was beautiful as a lone large transparent balloon led the way upward and 60 red ones followed allowing Bill’s spirit to soar with them as Taylor waved and shouted her goodbyes to her Uncle Bill.

Just before he made his final bow he grabbed one of the red balloons and danced a final jig for all of us. Once all of the red balloons were out of sight the transparent one veered back to the south until it was directly above us. It appeared to be hundreds of feet high and left this perfectly white light permanently embedded in our mind’s eyes and gave us a direction to follow when we go to be with him.

But it was the freedom of the "Chicken Dance" danced by his sister and cousins as the music blared from the boom box that made the celebration of Bill’s life complete. Laugh, enjoy life, be a little crazy … exactly what he would have done. Heck, I bet he danced right along with them!
