Mrs. Gerard's four-leaf-clovers

07/08/2006

Gene Armstrong was in the office the other day and brought me a mounted four-leaf clover, a memento of a wonderful little old lady, Mrs. Alcy Gerard,  many of us will remember from years gone by. The back of the small, two-inch by two-inch
cardboard reads "Gerard's River Vu Lodge, Chamberlain, S.D., U.S.A. Mrs. Theo. A. Gerard." The number of the card is 48627, dated 7-4-'56. It also says "Iowa" in the upper right-hand comer indicating the clover was found there.
Mrs. Gerard was a very familiar sight in Greig Field, or anywhere there was grass, for that matter, as she hunted diligently for these clovers. I remember
hunting for one. Just one. I only wanted to find one and to be honest with you, I never did. How did this person find them everywhere she went? Do you have to be
Irish? I wonder.

Ed has carried one in his wallet as long as I have known him. Apparently you need to wear it around your neck in order to receive the good luck four leafed clovers promise. Good luck can't get out if you're sitting on it!
Shirley Feltman brought in a card the other day with two four-leaf clovers on it. Mrs. Gerard gave it to Shirley's daughter Rhonda when she was born (a premie) because she needed the extra luck.
