STRINGHAM (Zojea@aol.com) To: Paul R. Sarrett, Jr. (PRSJR@aol.com) File: 1847CEN.TXT Dated: 29 Sep. 1847 The second census of The Catawba Indians giving the names of the people follows. B.B. Massey's report to the governor of South Carolina states he knew of 106 Catawbas or maybe 110. 5 Catawbas had gone to Charleston, S.C. in 1851. One of them General James Kegg had died in Charleston in 1852 at the age of 69. The oldest member of the Tribe. Of the others (Lewis Stephens, Jim Morrison, a child and Polly Stephens), most or all still lived in Charleston in 1853, but had not been heard of since. Polly Readhead 40 b. 1807 Female Childen under 10 years of age: 6 Total Males 7 Total Females 20 27 Of the other 106, Hassey counted 15 in Arkansas, (Who had moved out there in 1851, never to return), 7 in North Carolina, and 84 in South Carolina, the 91 in North and South Carolina amounting to 15 men, 29 women and 47 children. It seems reasonable that of these 91 Catawbas in North and South Carolina in 1854 only five (Allen Harris, Jesse Harris, Jimmy Harris, Billy George, and Robert Marsh) were fathers and husbands with a wife and children at home; of the 47 children only 10 had a father in the house. Of these 91 Catawbas a majority (55) had the surnames of George, Harris or Brown -- 22 men named George, 20 named Harris, 13 named Brown, 11 named Marsh (descendants [in the male line] of Pamunkey Indian men from the Pamunkey reservation in Virginia) 8 named Canty, 4 each named White, Sanders or Tims, 2 each named Joe or Ayers and one man named Scott. The census itself follows; the; ages come from the 1849 count. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This file was contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Paul R.
