Selkirkshire FreeCENsus Project

Welcome to the Selkirkshire Free Census Project. We are a part of the UK Free Census Project (FreeCEN), which is dedicated to providing a free online searchable database of the census returns of 19th century England, Scotland and Wales.

Data is now online. The complete census returns for Selkirkshire 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 are now available for searching at the FreeCEN site.

Thanks to all volunteers!

A small, but very dedicated group of people from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Scotland worked tirelessly to get the returns for this county online in an efficient and timely manner. Thanks to Arthur, Bill, Charles, Margaret, Mary and Nicky for all your hard work. It is greatly appreciated! Also, thanks to Alison for designing and maintaining this site. I know the database users pass along their thanks to all concerned with Selkirkshire in particular, and the FreeCEN project in general.

Enjoy and may your searches be fruitful! Just remember…try to be as creative with your spelling when using this database as our ancestors and/or the enumerators were at the time these data were recorded.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the transcriptions, please contact me, .

At this time, it appears that the later census data will not be available for us to transcribe. Therefore, if you are interested in helping with another region in Scotland, or would like more information, please visit the FreeCEN Scotland Web site.
