Portachro, near Skipness, Argyllshire, Scotland also seen as Portero, Portaero, Portachro, Portachrow Probably Puirt a' Chrudh, Port a' Chruidh (Chro), Possibly Port Na Gro Sources: -OPR records, years 1783-1854, FHC film # 1041076 {Records extracted from the Skipness Old Parochial Register. There are two volumes of these records on the film. The first volume pages run from p. 78-164. The second volume pages run from p. 1 - 38A. Every other page of the second volume is unnumbered, so I have labeled them the number from the previous page followed by the letter A. I have attempted to group together by family.} -Skipness, Memories of a Highland Estate, Angus Graham From Skipness: Memories of a Highland Estate: "PUIRT A' CHRUIDH. Ruined houses standing on a bluff above the landing place. A valuation roll of 1855 shows three tenants, which suggest that this was a runrig holding later absorbed in the Home Farm." Also From Skipness: Memories of a Highland Estate: "Better documented than Shell Bay is Port a' Chruidh, which lies about a mile to the north. The name means the Port of the Cattle, and the final word sounds like "Chro' to uninstructed ears." From Martyn Taylor , May, 2003: "Port na Chro", a pair of semi detached cottages that are now let out as holiday cottages by the Skipness estate, located on a beach at a tiny one-time harbour north of Skipness Point. From an unpublished history of Skipness by a Dr James Coutts. Words in square brackets are additions from Martyn Taylor. "... A regular trade in the Black Cattle of the Highlands was carried on, partly with neighbouring towns but largely by shipment in trading smacks to Rothesay and other convenient ports. A creek on the Eastern coast - Port a Croadh was largely used in that trade - later a red sandstone pier was built [the pier referred to was, I think, about a mile further to the north - its remains can still be seen]. ... As we have already seen, another creek - Port a Croidh [note the different spelling], about a mile further North on the same coast [as Skipness Point] was used in the 18th and 19th centuries for the transhipment of cattle and other merchandise by the smacks and luggers, the regular carriers of these days."
