MCELVAIN-
I am researching a DanielMcElvain, and from S. C. records that I have researched this manseems to have come from Sumter Co., Ga. Here is what I have onDaniel, so far. Daniel was born in Sumter Co., S. C. around 1797. Hemoved to Dooly Co., Ga., sometimes in the 1840s. According to theDooly Co., Ga., 1850 census records, Daniel's wife was namedElizabeth (surname unknown). Daniel appeared on the 1850 Dooly Co.census records with his family, but by 1860, he was no longerrecorded on the Georgia census records, and it is assumed he wasdeceased by this time. Here are the children I found on the Ga. 1850census: 1. Susan E. McElvain was born around 1829 in Sumter Co., S.C.; 2. Samuel McElvain was born around 1830, in Sumter Co., S. C.; 3.Elizabeth McElvain was born around 1831, in Sumter Co., S. C.; 4.Mary B. McElvain was born 16 April 1835, Sumter Co., S. C.

I would like to knowif city directories for Sumter City are available pre 1900 that Icould have someone look in for my family (African-American). I would like to know if they are incity directories before that time. BLANEY/HARPER/JOHNSON-Hasanyone to your knowledge worked out the Blaney/Harper Johnson family? What about Arthur P. Johnson, the school teacher from NC shown on the1850 census? There has to be some clue in my opinion based on thegiven names of J. J. Johnson's children: Charles H., Thomas, RichardA., Joseph B., John W., and Warren H. Seems to be someone who'ssurname perhaps started with an H., perhaps on the maternal side. When Charles Edward Hicks and Margaret Alice Johnson married, theynamed boys James Moody Hicks and Wayne Steckle Hicks. Any of thesenames ring bells for you in Clarendon/Sumter counties? Hey, I'm sorryI'm getting carried away on this family which really has me stumped!Just a bunch of wild guesses...
