OBITUARY OF MARY ELIZABETH SKINNER GRIER

~~~~~~~~
October 1, 1787---December 15, 1857
Mary's obituary was written by her son-in-law, Rev. Archibald M. Peurifoy:
~~~~~~~~~~

Mrs. Mary Grier, widow of the late Benj. Grier, Esq., died in Georgetown District, S.C., on 15th Dec 1857, aged 70 years, and in the 21st year of her widowhood. She was the mother of thirteen children, seven of whom were taken to Heaven before her; one leaving a large family; died in the triumphs of a gospel faith, the others in infancy; the remaining six are all members of the church. The writer has no knowledge as to the time of her conversion, but in 1824, while travelling Black River Circuit, he found her and her excellent husband members of the Old Pee Dee Church. The itinerant minister always found a hearty welcome in her home, and many who read this will thank God that she is now reaping the fruits of her labor. The Bible was her constant companion and her private devotions she never neglected. The Sabbath always found her at the house of God, and the Sunday before her death, she was there listening to the word of Life, but the next found her in Heaven. She was a most affectionate wife, a fond and tender mother and a kind mistress. During her Last hours, she was not pernitted to leave any testimony of her future prospects, but her long and well ordered Life, her undoubting piety and her unflinching performance of duty assures her bereaved friends that they need not sorrow as those who have no hope. She has left an example worthy the imitation of all her children and grandchildren, and may this heavy stroke of Providence make them all exemplary Christians and may they tread in her footsteps.
