GEORGETOWN LAND DEEDS

YAUHANNAH LAND DEEDS

A GUIDE TO GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA LAND RECORDS:

South Carolina did not have counties as we know them today until 1785. Prior to that time, there were only four counties in South Carolina: Granville, Colleton, Berkeley, and Craven.. No records were kept within these counties, as they were merely for describing locations. The land records were kept in Charleston. Deeds from 1719 - 1785 were recorded in Charleston. The Charleston deed books remain in the Office of the Register of Mesne Conveyance in the Charleston County Court House, but microfilm copies can be seen at the South Carolina History and Archives in Columbia, South Carolina. Georgetown District was formed from part of Craven County in 1785. This was the beginning of deeds being recorded in the Georgetown County Court House. All court records filed in Georgetown County prior to 1862 have been destroyed - the records were sent to Cheraw Court House for safekeeping and were destroyed there by fire.

Deed abstracts of Yauhannah from the Georgetown County, South Carolina Deed Books, beginning in the year 1866.
