MELTON
Richard Singletary 10/25/98
I am looking for John MELTON and Amanda Atkinson MELTON families. These two showed up on the 1880 Census of Chesterfield County, SC. I could not find them again on the 1890-1900 Census for Chesterfield County, SC. I did find John MELTON on the 1860 Census for Chesterfield County, SC with a different wife -- Rebecca! This fits with the family history of John having two different families! I can't find John with either family in the 1870, 1850, or 1840 census records. These could be my ggrandparents. I would like to get info on both the ATKINSON families and the Melton families -- both MELTON families as well as John's parents, if possible. If you can help, please contact me.

Rod Miller 3/21/98
Am looking for any trace of a John MILLER, supposedly from Chesterfield County, SC. We know he was last in Calloway County, KY, married for the third time there in 1828, and died there in 1841. We know he was last married to a Rebecca CLAYTON MIDGETT? in Calloway County, KY. Any leads as to this mystery would be greatly appreciated.

NORRIS

Seeking information about the NORRIS families who were listed on the 1800 Chesterfield Co. Census, all households on the same page: James, Joel, William and Edetha. Can anyone help me with the NORRIS surname in Chesterfield? The James NORRIS I am searching for was a Rev. soldier and was reportedly at Cowpens and with General Francis Marion. Could this have happened if he was from Chesterfield County? Did other Rev. soldiers from Chesterfield have similar records? Thanks.

Seeking any information which might connect the OLIVER families of Chesterfield County, SC. Sarah OLIVER was born in 1816. She lived in the Mt. Croghan area for at least 20 years. OLIVER born 1847, Marshall OLIVER born 1851, W.B. OLIVER born 1852, Hardy OLIVER born 1853, Sarah, Jr. born 1858, Frances born 1865. I believe he belonged to Sarah, Jr. who in the 1900 Census shows Perl still at home age 21 and Lanner (Nealie?) age 12. James Augustus age 19 was boarding with Isaac Rivers. He married my grandmother, Martha Eva JOHNSON in 1901. Can anyone help me with this?

He was in SC at the end of the Civil War, but he went to DeKalb Co., AL and is listed in the 1870 census there. I could not find him in DeKalb census for 1880. Rogers, b. in 1876 -- maybe in Chesterfield Co., SC. I find no ROGERS in Chesterfield Co. surnames list, but I do find ADAMS. Humphry B. ROGERS mother was Anna Adams ROGERS. Would like to find out any information on TEAL family members from Chesterfield County, SC. Specifically, I am interested in locating, if possible, any descendants of my 3G grandfather William TEAL and his wife Isabella McRAE. It is stated in the estate settlement papers of Isabella that she and William had two children that resided in the Chesterfield District of SC and were now deceased. One was named Benjamin F. TEAL. The other was named Elizabeth TEAL. Elizabeth was married to a Hezekiah LIZENBY (or possibly Lisenby). Any information on these people or their families would be appreciated. I have information on William and his family members I would be willing to share.

TURNAGE/MCKAY
Colleen Turnage 6/27/98
Last verified direct line ancestor is Robert Bennett TURNAGE, who appears as a child in 1850 SC Chesterfield County census. Father is listed as John TURNAGE with his wife, Effa. I've been told that Effa was John TURNAGE's 2nd wife, and that John TURNAGE and Effa had no children together. I have also been told that Nancy McKAY was John TURNAGE's lst wife, but have been unable to find any information to substantiate this claim. I know that a will of John MCKAY of Marlboro County (1826) mentions a daughter, Nancy, wife of John TURNAGE, but would like more than this to verify her as the mother of one, some, or all of John TURNAGE's children. Any help much appreciated.

Colleen Turnage 6/27/98
My father is James Eddie TURNAGE, his father was James Oscar TURNAGE, born in Chesterfield County, SC. James Oscar's parents were Henry TURNAGE and Josephine W. PURVIS. They were first cousins. Henry's mother was Christian (Christan on her headstone) FREEMAN. Josephine's mother was Effie FREEMAN. Christian and Effie were sisters; their father was Jesse FREEMAN. I would love to find out more about each of these lines. Thank you.

John WATTS was born in Chesterfield District, SC to Josiah WATTS (b. abt. 1780) and Margaret "Peggy" EVANS (b. abt. 1785) on May 26, 1805. The family moved to Wayne County, MS before 1810. I'm looking for any information on WATTS or EVANS families before 1800 in an attempt to establish a connection.

WATTS / EVANS / HAMILTON
Cynthia Porcher 4/27/98
I am researching my grandfather's family. He was Robert Lee WATTS, son of Townley B. WATTS and Hennie (Babe) EVANS. He had an older sister named Mame, but no younger siblings as his mother died from childbirth complications. He was raised by his grandmother EVANS. PaPa's father remarried and had about 10 more children. I do not have their names or the name of the second wife. PaPa was born June 23, 1893 and died in Charleston on March 21, 1990. He was married to Cornelia Alice HAMILTON of Union County, NC. Mama's sister Bess lived in Pageland (Mrs. C.M. Tucker, Sr.) They came to Charleston during the Depression. I do have a little more info, if that would be helpful. I have good HAMILTON family records, but almost nothing on WATTS and nothing on EVANS. Any help that you might be able to offer would be greatly appreciated.

WOOD
Brenda Wood Johnston 4/27/98
I am searching for information on Henry WOOD, b. 1785, d. 1862, m. Catherine McDougal/McCullers (she was also adopted by Wilde family). Their children were: John A., Elizabeth, Joseph Butler, David Gregg, and William Henry. Sometime back in the 1830's, John A. WOOD (my GGgrandfather) and William Henry WOOD left Society Hill, near Cheraw, SC for GA and AL. This is all the history I have on the above Henry WOOD. Is there any record of the Henry WOOD family in this area? I assume they had a farm in the Society Hill area. Thank you.
