Haywood b.1899-d.1979 The War Between The States ended April 9, 1865. Freedom of the Colored People became a fact by June of that year. Having been deprived of early training, they were unable to make their way in life for the future without a leader. It was in the eventful year, 1868, that Abel Baptist Church was organized by six brethren: Messrs. Pet Watkins white, Washington Haywood, Jimmy Watkins, John Cannon, Billy Holmes and Edward Ligeon. After the organization the group had no place to worship. Under the leadership of Mr. Watkins, they were progressive. Mrs. Crowe, a very kind white lady of the community, saw the need of a church and gave the land upon which an arbor was built. Posts were driven into the ground and poles nailed across and covered with bushes from trees and called "A Brush Arbor." This little Christian band had strong emotions and a strong desire to attend church. After they had found the love of Jesus, they wished others to share the light. Mr. Watkins went to the brush arbor each Saturday and taught them how to conduct their service and record the minutes of their business meetings. The first pastor to serve was Reverend Tabor Worren, and the first clerk was Mr. Jimmy Goldman. Since the group had no place to worship except a brush arbor, this problem was the first to claim their attention. They continued to pray and work. Later a small church was built of logs hewn from timber and the spaces between were filled with mud to prevent the cold wind from blowing through. When the church was completed, the pastor thought of Abel, the second son of Adam and Eve, a keeper of sheep. No other name seemed more appropriate. It was he, Reverend Tabor Worren, who named the church ABEL. Under his leadership the congregation prospered and others were added to the church. The second pastor to serve was Reverend Albert Lewis. He was succeeded by Reverend W.M. Parker who sometime later resigned and Reverend Charlie Chriswell became the fourth pastor. There is nothing recorded to show how long each minister held the pastorial charge, but the four together served from 1868 to 1889, a period of twenty-one years. The fifth pastor to serve was Reverend Harrison Oglesby of Seneca, S.C. He was elected January 20, 1889. His way of transportation was by train. Under his leadership their business meetings were held on the fourth Saturday of each month at 3:30 PM. After the meeting, the door of the church was opened for the reception of members. Their church services were held each fourth Sunday at 12:00 Noon, the evening service at their usual hour. Page 3 In February, 1892, the members voted for the pastor to stay at the home of Deacon John Singleton over the week-ends and the church pay for his board which cost $1.20 for each meal. The pastor's salary was $100 a year. On March 25, 1893, the members voted to raise his salary $25 to a total $125 paid yearly. As they progressed under his leadership, they purchased land from Mrs. Crowe, who gave the plot for them to build the brush arbor. In a short time a frame structure was being erected. The members were taxed $0.50 each to pay for the church flooring, and given three months to raise their money. On June 23, 1894, the members voted to get a charter for the church. Those that signed for the charter were Reverend W.M. Watkins, Deacons Stephen Cannon, Richard Butler, Prince White, John Cannon and Kato Sherman. At the evening service June 26, 1899, Reverend Oglesby took his text from St. Luke, chapter 17: 28, 32 verses, "Remember Lot's Wife." After announcing his text he was striken with paralysis. As he was lifted and being carried from the rostom, he asked Reverend Edward Reid to preach that text. The Reverend Reid told him he would try. He preached a wonderful sermon. Reverend Ogiesby was carried to a house near the church where he passed away in a short time. He gave the best of his service for 10 years and six months. After the passing of Reverend Oglesby, different ministers supplied the pulpit for three months. On October 26, 1899, Reverend Richard Williams of Seneca, S.C. was elected pastor. It was during his administration that the church was nearing its completion. The members paid $1.00 each a year for church dues. Reverend Williams labored faithfully and willingly. On September 26, 1907, he became ill, was confined to bed and later passed away. He served for 7 years and 11 months. For four months, different ministers supplied the pulpit. On March 21, 1908, Reverend Green Hunter of Gainesville, Georgia was elected pastor. Under his leadership accomplishments were made. The church was completed, September 19th the members voted that the balance due on the church be paid by the pastor and deacons of the church. On September 23rd of that year, the pastor and deacons John Singleton, David Whitner, Terrell Wright, Stephen Cannon, Richard Butler, H.B. Walker, Isaac Butler, Worren Reid and J.H. Haywood, clerk of the church, paid all indebtedness of the church. October 25th of that year, service was held at 3:30 PM for the laying of a cornerstone at Abel. The stone was laid by J.H. Haywood, W.M. of Banneker Lodge ff^37 Central, S.C. In May 1909, a bell was bought for the church. The ringing could be heard for several miles. Business meetings were held on second Saturdays of each month at 2:00 PM and church services were held second and fourth Sundays at 12:00 Noon. During his pastorial charge, he preached 96 sermons, had two foot washings, administered the Lord's Supper eight times and baptized 125 candidates. On November 26, 1909, Reverend Hunter resigned. He served one year and eight months. Different ministers supplied the pulpit. January 21, 1910, Reverend John A. Watson of Seneca, S.C. was elected pastor. Under his leadership the business meetings were held on the second Saturday of each month at 2:00 PM and church service was the second Sunday only. In 1913, the Women's Auxiliary was organized. New pews were made and installed and lamps were bought for the church. Reverend Watson resigned on October 21, 1921. He served for a period of 11 years and eight months. Page 4 A minister supplied the pulpit for November. December 10, 1921, Reverend John H. McKissich of Easley, S.C. was elected pastor. Under his leadership the following activities were made: the budget plan, the duplex system and the organization of the senior usher board. He resigned October 10, 1925. He served for three years and ten months. He was succeeded by Reverend J.W. Pennington of Belton, S.C., elected November?, 1925. After moving to Concord, N.C., he sent his resignation January 8, 1927. He served one year and ten months. Reverend John W. Beeks, of Seneca, S.C. became the eleventh pastor. He was elected March 13, 1927. It was during his administration the following activities and accomplishments were made: The Organization of the Willing Workers Club and the White Rose Club. February 11, 1928, new carpet was bought for the church at the cost of $218, $139 of the amount had been paid. Sunday evening, April 29, 1928, Abel Church was destroyed by fire. The insurance had expired prior to the burning. Only $4.27 was in treasury. However, the pastor called the worshipping group together and gave words of consolation. Plans were made to raise money to rebuild the church. Due to our pastor and members, with a mind to work and with faith and fortitude, the erection of our present church soon began. Twenty-one members pledged to head their list with $5.00 each. They were Deacon James Cannon, Susie E. Haywood, Leila Greenlee, JanieWatkins, Sallie Jenkins, Katie Jackson, Nina Brown, Deacons F.A. Vance, P.H. Butler and Terrel Wright, Maggie Whitner, Minnie Collins, Rachel Dupree, Rosa Preston, Willie Reid, Edward Pinson, J.L. Walker, Robert Hamilton, Nora Reese, Lizzie Burdine, of Spencer, N.C. and Corena Reese, of Cleveland, Ohio. The business meetings were held in the elementary school each second Saturday at 2:00 PM. May 11th, of that year, the pastor, officers and members of Abel received an invitation from the pastor, officers and members of Goldenview Baptist Church of Clemson, to worship in their church each second Sunday until Abel could be rebuilt. The invitation was accepted and indeed appreciated. The first service was held in Goldenview Church May 12, 1928. Amount reported by members and others was.............. $468.93 June 10th, Reports were................................ 210.38 Total $679.31 The group continued to pray and work in this time of darkness. The pastor and members were going through a great financial struggle. The Lord blessed the workers, donations were received from white friends, churches, organizations, and individuals to help rebuild Abel Church at its present site. The following payments were made to the contractor on the building: October 15,1928. ............................ ........$1,094.18 November 12,1928................................... 326.10 December 10,1928................................... 579.72 Total Paid..................................... $2,000.00 Page 5 From December 10, 1928 to May 14,1938, amount paid on the building: To Contractor. ...................................... $1,771.58 Paid in 1928......................................... 2,000.00 Total......................................... $3,771.58 During the depression of 1929 and 1930, and the scarcity of money, there were times when only the interest could be paid. The Reverend Beeks resigned October 11, 1938. He was a man of courage and worked hard to complete the church. He held the pastoral charge for eleven years and seven months. One son, Reverend W.J. Owens, was called to the ministry and preached his first sermon with the subject "I's Time I Was About My Father's Business." The twelfth pastor to serve was Reverend Raymond W. Collins of Easley, S.C. elected November 15, 1938. Under his leadership the following activities and accomplishments were made: January 9,1939 the officers paid $60.00, the balance due on church debt and received the note and mortgage. The price the church was built for in 1928 was $3,500, but when the interest and compound interest were added to the principal the total was $4,198.20. In 1945 the cement walk was poured in front of the church. In 1946, the church was brick veneered outside. In 1951 it was renovated inside and the installation of a new gas heating system. We are ever grateful for these accomplishments made in our church which shows great spiritual leadership. Reverend Collins resigned November 17,1952. He held the pastorial charge for fourteen years. Additional land was bought and paid for, $650. The 4th Sunday was added which gave two Sunday services. The thirteenth pastor was Reverend R.T. Duncan of Pickens, S.C., elected December 28, 1952. Under his leadership the membership of the church was reorganized into various working units including four groups under the supervision of leaders: The Jolly Workers Club, the Little Helpers Club, the Young Girls Nannie H. Burroughs Club and a Trustee Board. He saw the need of periodic Financial Rallies and placed great emphasis upon systematic givers. The church was progressively improved and beautified with insulation and new pews at a cost of $4,189.38, $2,000 had been paid. The Abel School Building was bought by the church for $410.00. And that we may continue to move toward the goal of greater social welfare and spiritual achievement. Page8 MISSING Pages 9, 10 & 11 HISTORY OF ABEL CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL According to our Church History, Sunday School began with our fourth pastor, J.R. Criswell, in the year 1885. According to Dr. S.C. Campbell's HISTORY ON CHURCHES, their infancy was on schooling. Churches would meet in prayer and have business meetings, then the people were taught to read, write, spell, and count. The blueback spelling book and the Bible were used. According to the Historical Record of the Seneca River Association, the convention was organized at Abel Church in 1885. The first officers were Reverend. S.H. Oglesby, moderator of the association, W.R. Parker, secretary, and Brother H. Wiggins, treasurer. Reverend Oglesby became pastor of the church. Under the last part of the ministry of Reverend Oglesby and R.R. Williams, Sunday School was organized at Abel. Brother Ediie Byrdine was elected superintendent, Brother Frank Vance was senior teacher, Brother Dave Whitt was treasurer and Miss Floreed Reese was secretary. Reverend J.A. Watson was credited for seeing that the Sunday School was supplied with literature from the Baptist Publishing House. Reverend J.H. Pennington was an extra instructor and he was the first to inform us about Sunday School methods. During the term of Reverend Beek, the church burned in 1928. The Sunday School bought lumber and built pews for the church. The names of our superintendent from 1885 1934 were Ediie Byrdine, Brother J.L. Walker, Brother Jap Oliver, Reverend W.D. Durham and Jim Cannon. The names of the teachers were F.A. Vance, Anna Vance, Kate Jackson, Janie Watkin, Lizzie Byrdine, Corrie Greir, Reverend Will Byrdine, Judge Greir, Betty Cannon, Sallie Jenkins, Mae Rosa Green and J.L. Walker. The secretaries were Floree Reese, Earnestine Byrdine, Mary Agnes W. Greenlee, Polly B.D. Austin. The treasurers wee Dave Whitt, Anna Vance, Corrie Grier, Margaret Reese and Angelee Wallace. Under the leadership of our twelfth pastor, Reverend R.W. Collins, the Sunday School was represented in the State Sunday School Congress in 1939. We have not missed a session since we started. The delegates that represented us have received a certificate from the following courses: Page 11 MISSING Pages 12 ? o----------o Black Baptists in Pendleton, seeking their own church in the 1870's, traveled to Clemson's Abel Baptist Church to worship. Soon, several felt a new church should be established in Pendleton itself and seven Abel deacons set about to have it done. The seven were Elijah Winston, Harper Ligon, M.R. Haywood, Preacher Reese, William Watkins, Joe Teasley and Edward Manager. In July, 1874, they purchased land at the foot of Hunter Hill, behind Hunter's Store, on what then was the road to present-day Clemson. History shows it was a tree-studded site with a spring in the center which sparkled in the sunlight - thus the name Silver Spring. Services were set up in a brush arbor, until a building could be erected. It was in this earlier building that many black children received their first education. One was Jane Hunter, daughter of a former sharecropper. Jane Hunter in later life established the Phyllis Wheatley Centers for black women and recalled her past in her book, "A Nickel and a Prayer". In 1962, Silver Spring Baptist Church moved into a new building on North Mechanic Street - the present road to Clemson. Located on North Mechanic Street.
