The circuit was part of the Bush River Circuit and worship services were held at West's Schoolhouse which stood at a point where Forestville Baptist Church now stands. People who lived west of the Saluda River swam their horses across the river to worship there. In 1844 discord within the membership caused a split within the church. In 1856 Dacusville Methodist Church was organized with John Clark as pastor and the following charter members: Polly Morgan Nance Singleton Tommie Singleton Timothy Keeler Betsy Hunt Vicie Hunt Alzara Hunt Foster Hulda Hunt Foster In August, 1886, the Charleston earthquake coincided with a service being held at the church. According to church records, Rev. J.D. Davis was praying that the people might be "moved to awaken their interests in their spiritual welfare." His prayers were answered even as he prayed!! "The building began to tremble, the tin kerosene lamps hanging on the walls began to flicker (it was a night service) and everyone, except one who sat placidly and calmly during the excitement and turmoil, had the same impulse-to get to the outside before the building came tumbling down. The house was full and the doorways became congested and one young fellow visiting in the community with his brother (he was from Spartanburg) jumped out the windows rather than wait his turn out the door. Just as he landed on the ground, a young lady also jumped out the same window and landed astride the young fellow's neck. The impact was so great that a bone in his neck was fractured and so long as he lived he held his head in a sideways position. The young man receiving the injury was Cal Thomas, an uncle of Bess, Babe and Rupe Thomas. The young lady was Miss Deborah Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ike Anderson who later married Mr. Henry McDaniel and became the mother of Mr. Sam McDaniel and his brothers and sisters. The young lady who remained seated during the turmoil was later asked why she did not try to get out, to which she replied, "Well, I felt that if my time had come, I'd rather go while in the house of the Lord." She was Miss Margaret Barrett, a great aunt of the Harts, who remained a most faithful member of the church until her death many years later. (W.M. Ponder, Jr. 1967 History of the Church). Dacusville Methodist Church was not the only church in Pickens County to feel the effects of the Charleston Earthquake that night. There are cracks in the walls of the old Pickens Presbyterian Church that were caused by tremors from the earthquake. On October 8, 1901, Dr. J.J. Morgan deeded a half acre as a gift to the church; his office and home stood nearby. In 1924 the frame-structured sanctuary was torn down. The present brick sanctuary was dedicated by Rev. Foster Speer in November of 1924. The Woman's Society of Christian Service was organized in June of 1928.
