Descendants of Hans Peter Steffen

First Generation

1. Hans Peter Steffen, son of Gabriel Stffen and Barbara Br, was born on 3 Mar 1687 in Steinsfurt, Heidelberg County, Germany, was baptized on 9 Mar 1687 in Steinsfurt, Heidelberg County, Germany, and died in 1757 in Frederick County, Virginia at age 70. Another name for Peter was Peter Stephens.

General Notes: A story passed through several generations of this family claim that Peter was married before his marriage to Maria. There is evidence to support this, although, a marriage record has not found as proof. The first marriage was probably about 1711 or 1712. The eldest son, Lewis, was born in 1713. Lawrence, the 2nd son, had to be born by 1723 for him to be of age in 1745 when he purchased land. Thus, the two sons and probably the daughters were born in the first marriage. Family tradition claims the surname of the first wife was Lewis and that their son, Lewis, was named for his mother's people. Very little is known about this Stephens family before they appeared in the lower Shenandoah Valley in 1732 along with Jost Hite, often referred to as "The Old German Barron." A Peter Stephens was living near Kingston, Rockland Co. NY in 1711 and around 1717 some Stephens were living in New Jersey. They were found living near Germantown, PA in 1728, where Peter and Maria Christina were married according to tradition. This is much the same route followed by Jost Hite. Since Peter was so closely identified with Hite after 1732 it is thought that Peter Stephens either came to America with Hite or became acquainted with him soon after both entered the colonies. Peter Stephens is one of the few persons definitely named by historians as going to the Shenandoah Valley with the original Hite party. This group of 16 families are known to be the first settlers of the Valley. Jost Hite had purchased 80,000 acres upon which he contracted to settle a certain number of people. Much of this land had come from Lord Fairfax, proprietor. A law suit developed over this land and Hite hired John Marshall to represent him. This suit, which was settled some fifty years after the settlers arrived in 1732, made John Marshall famous. Marshall, who later became a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, argued that if Lord Fairfax's deeds to the settlers were not good, it would follow that deeds to settlers made by other proprietors would fall. This could not be allowed to happen and the suit was won by Marshall and Hite. The titles to the Stephens family and other settlers were settled. The Peter Stephens family had settled on the Opequon Creek and there they founded Stephensburg. Today, it is known as Stephens City and is located a few miles southwest of Winchester, Frederick Co. Virginia, an area rich in the history of our country. George Washington, who was hired by Lord Fairfax as a surveyor, lived in Frederick Co. for several years within a few miles of the Stephens family. In 1758 George Washington was a candidate for the House of Burgesses. Four men were running for the two seats. Henry Stephens, father of the Peter Stephens who emigrated to Clinton Co. Ohio, was one of those who voted for George Washington, one of the winners.
Much has been written about Jost Hite but his ancestry has not been proven. He is said to have been born in Strasburg, Alsace, Germany, yet his name has been recorded as Jost Van Heydt, indicating a Dutch name. Hite always signed his name in German but did not always spell it the same. The uncertainty of Jost Hite's nationality has caused some question as to the nationality of Peter Stephens. Records show that Lewis Stephens, Peter's eldest son, made the translation of the will of George Thrasher, which was written in Dutch. The fact that Peter signed his name in German and that his son, Lawrence, stated in his naturalization papers that he (Lawrence) was a German Protestant makes it apparent that Peter was from Germany where the name would be "Steffons."

Edited by Dan V. Stephens, Fremont, Nebraska, 1936

Further research by Daniel Bly has shown that Peter Stephens was born and baptized in Steinsfurt, Germany. He was confirmed on Easter 1699 also at Steinfurt.
Note from Daniel:
We know this is Peter Stephens of Virginia because Peter of "Frederick
Co."Virginia was naturalized in Williamsburg 31 Oct. 1743, and he stated
that he was from Heidelberg, Germany (Steinsfurt is in Heidelberg County of
the Palatinate). Also Gabriel and Barbara had a daughter, Magdalena, who
married Christian Neuschwanger at Steinsfurt in 1701. The Neuschwangers, along with Peter Stephens and another member of this family, Ulrich Steffen, all appear together in May 1730 in the Reformed Congregation on the Skippack Creek in what is now Montgomery Co. PA. Jost Hite also lived in this region and by 1732 the Neuschwangers, and Peter Stephens came to VA with Hite and Neuschwanger and Stephens settled next to each other with adjoining land in Frederick County VA.
There is absolutely no evidence that Peter Stephens was in New York or New Jersey or that he had two wives. Dan Stephens and some early family
historians came up with the two wives idea because of the gaps in the
childrens ages and because they believed his wife was a Rittenhouse and
since the Rittenhouses had come to PA much earlier, he could have only
married her there. As it turns out- it was Peter's son, Lewis, who was
married to the Rittenhouse.
The absolutely earliest record of Peter in America is his name on a
congregation list in PA in May 1730. Since Peter was naturalized in Va in
1743 it indicates that he also probably did not come to America until at
least late 1720s. If he were with the Hite group in NY in 1709-10 he would
have been naturalized much earlier. Also his son Lawrence, b. 1718-20, was naturalized in Frederick Co. VA. in 1747. This indicates that he was born in Germany-- if he had been born in the colonies he would not need to be naturalized. Since Peter's oldest daughter, was named Maria Christina, and she married in 1736 and had her last child in 1757- it means she was born about 1715-6-- Evidence she was given her mother's name and that Maria Christina was the only wife of Peter Stephens. The gap in children's ages can be explained easily enough by the death of children- a very common occurance.
Lewis Stephens was born in 1714 (according to age given at several
depositons and his obituary in July 1802- in which it states he was in his
88th year. He married Mary Rittenhouse, daughter of Peter Rittenhouse and
Anna of Germantown, Pa. This Peter Rittenhouse did purchase some land in Frederick Co. Va. about 1744 and then sold it to Lewis Stephens in 1747.
There are deed in Philadelphia, disposing of land in Germantown- that prove Lewis's wife Mary was a daughter of Peter Rittenhouse.

From Daniel Bly's book, From The Rhine To The Shenadoah, Vol III.
Peter was baptized 9th of Mar 1687 and sponsored by Peter von Kennill of Steinsfurt. He was confirmed in the Reformed Church at Steinsfurt, Pentecost Sunday 1699, but does not appear as an adult in records at Steinsfurt. He obviously moved to another community before marrying and starting a family. It is not know where he was as a young adult but it was long thought that he left with a large contingent of people from the Kraichgau region of Germany who emigrated at the end of the brutal winter of 1709-10. The extreme cold killed livestock and damaged the winter wheat crop, resultin in famine. Desperate to escape the conditions of Germany, a group petitioned the British overment to allow them to go to America. The British relented and emigrants from the Kraichgau and other areas of the Palatinate arrived in Pennsylvania and New York in 1710. Among these were Hans Jost Heydt and Hans Funk of Bonfeld, near Steinsfurt. Heydt, better known in America as Jost Hite, went to New York and Funk went to the Conestoga area of present-day Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Both later ended up in Shenadoah Valley of Virginia.

It was thought that Peter left Germany with this group of Palatines because he later lived near Hite in Pennsylvania and was with Hite's original group of settlers in the Shenadoah Vally. However, the extensive research by Hank Jones into the New York Palatine records turns up no evidence that Peter Steffen was in this group of immigrants [Hank Z Jones, The Palatine Families of New York, Universal City, California, Two Volumes]. Hite and some of the Palatine immigrants left New Youk about 1716 and settled in the Skippack region of present-day Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, northwest of Philadelphia. In 1727 a fairly large contingency of Palatines, led by Rev. Georg Michael Weiss, arrived in Philadelphia and settled on the Skippack Creek in the same neighborhood where Hite and some of the New York Palatines had settled. They established a Reformed Congregation in 1729 under the leadeership of pastors Weiss and John Philip Boehm. among the founding members of this congregation were Ulrich "Stephen" and Hans Jerg Baumann, who arrived on the William and Sarah in September 1727 and Christian Neuschwanger, brother-in-law of Ulrich Stephan, whose name is first found an a May 1728 petition requesting protection from Indiam raids [Pennsylvania Archives, Series "1", Vol 1, p. 214]. Peter Stephan is first mentioned when he appears on a membership list of the congregation in 1730 and by then he was already a deacon [D D Brendle, History of Wentz's Reformed Church," Historical Sketches, Montgomery County Historical Society, Vol 5 1915 p. 49].

A conflict between Weiss and
Boehm caused some bitter discord within the congregation and by the spring of 1730 a segment "seceded" from the church. Peter "Stephan" a deacon in the Skippack congregation, along with Rev. John Philip Boehm and other officers of the congregation, wrote a letter to Reformed pastors in New York, regarding this dispute [William J. Hinke, The Life and Letters of Rev. John Philip Borhm, p. 210]. The long letter dated 17 May 1730, and also signed by Christian Neuschwanger and Hans Meyer, Elders, and Lorentz Bingeman another deacon, states in part;
Our poor congrgation, which has been com;letely split by him [ie. Weiss] has been kept this far in such harmful division and stife. Meanwhile this exceedingly unfortunate affair, which has separated the nearest blood relatives and has thrown them into fierce animosity against one another, will be kept up in this poor congregation.

This controversy continued through the year 1731 and may have been a deciding factor in Peter's decision and that of his brother-in-law, Christian Neuschwanger, to join Jost Hite, who was recruiting families in 1731 and 1732 to move to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with him.

Peter Stephens is reputed to have first settled a prsent-day Harpers Ferry, at the mouth of the Shenandoah River in 1732. However, the first documented record of him in Virginia is his patent from the Colony of Virginia for 674 acres on the North Branch of Crooked Run in Orange County, dated October 1734 [Virginia Land Patens Book "15", p. 336]. The north branch of Crooked Run is now called "Stephens Run" abd was ub tge area if Irabge County that became Frederich County in 1743. His tract included the area where the present-day town of Stephens City stands. The Stephens family had already been living on this land for as long as two years, since it is generally thought that Jost Hite and the other early settlers arrived in the area in 1732. The Rev. John Casper Stoever, a Reformed pastor in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, made a circuit to the pioneer settlements in Virginia in the spring of 1735 and recorded the baptism of little Johann Heinrich "Stephen", son of Peter, who had been born in Virginia the prvious spring. In 1736 Stoefer returned and his records show that Peter "Stephen" and wife, Maria Christina, sponsored the baptism of a daughter of Paul Froman, another member of the group that arrived in 1732 and son-in-law of Jost Hite.

Peter Stephens was appointed a constable by the Orange County court in May 1736 but only a few months later stepped aside in favor of his son, Lewis [Orange County Order Book "1", pp. 74,93,108]. In the fall of 1743 Peter Stephens traveled to Williamburg, then capital of Virginia, probably with others from the newly organized Frederick County. While there he took the oath of naturalization 31 October 1743. The record states that he was a "German Protestant from Hidelburgh on the River Mayne[sic] in the Empire of Germany--having lived for seven years or more in that part of Orange County designed to be called Frederick--" and now swears allegiance to King Geoge II. This is further evedence that he probably did not arrive in America as early as previouly thought. Had he been with the 1709-10 New York group he would have been naturalized much earlier. Furthermore, his son, Lawrence, born about 1718-20, was naturalized in Fredercik County, Virginia in August 1747. If he had been born in a British colony this would not have been necessary.

Peter Stephens received an additional 572-acre patent adjoining his earlier tract in November 1752. Also between 1743 and shortly before his death he distributed land to his sons. Peter wrote a will in April 1757 naming all his children and identifying them by order of age, first the sons, then the daughters. He appointed his wife, Maria Christina and sons Lewis and Lawrence as his executors
Frederick County will BOok "2" P. 266]. The will was probated 6 December 1757. While he appears in most court records as Peter "Stephens" he signed his name on 1737 and 1743 road petitions and his eill in German script as Peter "Stephan".

Peter married Maria Christina about 1730 in Germantown, PA. Maria was born about 1692 and died after 1757 in Frederick County, Virginia.

Children from this marriage were:

2 M    i. Ludwig Stephen Sr was born about 1714 in Germany and died on 22 Jul 1802 in Frederick County, Virginia about age 88.

3 F    ii. Maria Christina Stephen was born about 1716 and died after 1777.

4 M    iii. Lorentz Stephen was born about 1718-1720 in Germany and died in 1776 in Frederick County, Virginia about age 58.

5 F    iv. Maria Magdalena Stephen was born about 1722.

General Notes:
From Daniel Bly's book "From The Rhine To The Shenadah" volume III

Maria Magdalena Stephan (Stephens) (of Peter #14) was born in the Rhineland about 1722 and was still living in 1757. She was named as the second daughter in her father's will, which means she had to have been born in the early 1720s. Marie Magalena may have been married, but Peter Stephens did not give the married names of any of his daughters in his will. It is possible that she is the Maria Magdalena, who with her husband, Peter Spiess, sponsored baptism f a child of Lorentz and Anna Maria Steffen in May 1757, but further record of this couple has not been found

6 F    v. Margaretha Stephen was born about 1724 and died in 1801 in Shenandoah County, Virginia about age 77.

7 M    vi. Peter Stephen Jr. was born from about 1728 to 1730 in Virginia Or Germany and died in 1812 in Montgomery County, Virginia about age 84.

8 M    vii. Johann Heinrich Stephen was born on 8 Apr 1734 in Frederick County, Virginia and died in Nov 1767 in Frederick County, Virginia at age 33.

Second Generation (Children)

2. Ludwig Stephen Sr (Peter (Hans)1) was born about 1714 in Germany and died on 22 Jul 1802 in Frederick County, Virginia about age 88. Another name for Ludwig was Lewis.

General Notes:
From Daniel Bly's book "From The Rhine To The Shenadah" volume III

Lewis received a grant of 1384 acres of land in 1752 from Lord Fairfax. In
1754 he purchased 424 acres from his father being part of a 674 acre patent.
In 1758 Lewis applied to the General Assembly for a charter for the town of
Stephensburg (now Stephens City) and until about 1790 he did a thriving
business in town lots.
Farmer, Iron Works
From Daniel Bly's book, From The Rhine To The Shenadoah Vol III.
Lewis was already a young man when his family arrived in Virginia and the first mention of him on the Virginia frontier is found in the records of Rev. Johann Casper Stoever. As Ludwig Stephan, he sponsored the baptism of a child of Paul Froman in May 1735, when Stoever, a Reformed pastor in Pennsylvania, made his first circuit to the German community in Virginia. He also sponsored baptism of a nephew, Lewis Linville in June 1737 when Stoever returned to Virinia. In July 1736 Lewis Stephens was appointed a constable for Orange County in place of his father, who had only served a few months. In the summer of 1737 Lewis also signed a road petition to the Orange County court along with his father and about 50 other members of the Opequaon and Cedar Creek settlements.
Eventually Lewis Stephens became one of the mafor landowners in Frederick County. It would be pointless to include every deed and transaction he made, but beginning in August 1743, when he purchased 200 acres from Jost Hite, until shortly before his death, Lewis was involved in buying and selling land. This includes all the lots in the town of "Stephensburg". which he chartered in 1758. He lived for over 20 years ib a 195 acre tract ib Cedar Creek, which he purchased from John Koontz in August 1745. He was living there when he made a mortgage deed on the property in 1750 and when he asked the court for permission to dam a branch of Cedar Creek and build a mill there in September 1753 {Frederick County Order Book "5", p. 161]
During the French and Indian War Lewis Stephens was active in the Frederick County militia. He was appointed a Captain of the militia in March 1753 and in June 1754 was put in charge of the unit formerly commanded by John Hite [Frederick County Order Books "4" p. 427 and "%" p. 475]. He reported to George Washington, the commander of the Virginia militia in the Shenandoah Valley. Lewis was also sworn in as Frederick County sheriff, 15 October 1755 [Frederick County Order Book "7", p. 1]. By 1760 he was a "Major" in the militia and presided over a series of hearings and courts martial in Winchester. An octagonal arms magazine and fort, with two levels below ground was construcaated near his home on Cedar Creek. Called "Stephens Fort", it is still standing to this day, one of the few structures left in the Valley from that era.
Shortly after building his mill on Cedar Creeek [at what is present-day Marlboro], Lewis Stephens apparently became interested in the iron making business and began buying up large tracts of land on both sides of Cedar Creek. He eventually sold much of thes land to local farmers but in the deeds he inserted clauses reserving for himself the right to "whaatever mines of ore might be found on the said tract." [See Cecil O'Dell, Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Va. [Marcelline, MO, 1995] pp. 309-13 for a fuller account of these transactions.] In June 1767 Stephens sold his 195 acres with the mill, "where he lives" and some adjacent acreage to Isaac Zane, "Ironmaster" [Frederick County Deed Book "11", p.555}. Zane soon established a fairly extensive iron smelting and casting business at Marlboro and may have maintained some kind of partnership agreement with Lewis Stephens for much of that time.
Probably by the late 1730's a community began to grow up around Peter Stephen's home on the "Great Wagon Road" [Valley Pike] about eight miles south of Winchester, since most travelers and their animals had to stop for water and rest about every eight or ten miles. As early as October 1736 Lewis Stephens was authorized to keep an "Ordinary" at his house on the "Wagon Road" [Orange County Order Book "1" p. 119]. In 1754 Peter Stephens deeded his son Lewis 424 acres of his original 674 and in September 1758 Lewis was granted a charter by the Virginia legislature to incoporate a town, to be called "Stephensburg" [John Wayland, The German Element of the Shenandoah Valleu, pp. 86-7]. Stephens began laying off and selling half acres lots for his "new town", which was in fact called "New Town" form many years, even though the official name was Stephensburg. It is now called Stephens City.
Lewis Stephens wrote a will in Febuary 1797, naming his three children and the will was probated in Frederick County Court, 4 Feb 1806, more than three years after his death [Frederick County Will Book "8", P. 198]. He is buried with other members of his family in the old German Reform Church cemetery in Stephens Citty, but many of stones for the older generations of the Stephens family are missing or no longer legible. In the absence of tombstone and Bible records, determining the approximate birth years for the children of Peter Stephens was a problem. Fortunately, however, since Lewis Stephens was such an active busiman and landowner he had to make a number of depositions in court. In March 1770 he testified in the Fairfaz-Hite suit and gave his age as 56. Again, in March 1774 he stated in a depostion in Frederick County Court that he was age 60. His obituary in the Winchester Gazette states that he was in his 88th year and had lived in Frederick County for 70 years. This puts his birth in 1714 and arrival in Virginia in 1732.
Mary, wife of Lewis Stephens last appears on a deed in late 1797 and was deceased by Aporil 1798 when Lewis alone sold property. Her father, Peter Rittenhouse purchased 455 acres adjacent to Jacob Neuschwanger, near present-day Stephens City, from Jost Hite in May 1740 but sold the entire tract to Lewis Stephens in May 1744. Rittenhouse was back in Pennsylvania when he sold this land [Frederick County Deed Book, "1" p. 16]. Rittenhouse, a miller of Germantown Township in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, wrote a will in September 1748, naming his wife Anna and six children. Mary, listed first, was apparently the oldest daughter. All the children were to receive a share of his land upon the death of his wife [Philadelphia County Will Book "G", pp. 335-7]. Lewis Stephens and wife Mary, "late Rittenhouse," and their three children, all of Frederick County, Virginia, were named as heirs of Peter Rittenhouse, when they sold Mary's land in Germantown Township, Philadelphia County, to Isaac Zane of Frederick County, 4 November 1783 {Philadelphia County Deed Book "D", #8 1783, p. 373].

Ludwig married Mary Rittenhouse, daughter of Peter Rittenhouse and Ann, about 1740 in Frederick County, Virginia. Mary was born about 1720 and died before Apr 1798 in Frederick County, Virginia.

Children from this marriage were:

9 M    i. Peter Stephens was born in 1742 in Frederick County, Virginia and died in 1783 in Frederick County, Virginia at age 41.

10 M    ii. Lewis Stephens Jr was born in 1748 in Frederick County, Virginia and died in 1822 in Stephensburg, Frederick County, Virginia, USA at age 74.

General Notes: Farmer

Lewis married Mary Hening. Mary was born about 1748 and died in 1832 in Stephensburg, Frederick County, Virginia, USA about age 84.

11 F    iii. Mary Stephens was born about 1745 in Frederick County, Virginia and died after 1805 in Frederick County, Virginia.

3. Maria Christina Stephen (Peter (Hans)1) was born about 1716 and died after 1777.

General Notes: This daughter was named Maria Christina in Peter's will, and she is thought to be born of the first wife, yet she has the name of the second wife. There was an Anna Christina married to John Lenvill and they had a son named
Lewis b. 20 Feb 1737. Lewis Stephens was the testis at the baptism of the
baby. It is thought that Anna is a daughter of Peter and it is probable that
Maria and Anna are the same person.

In his will, Peter Stephens, named "Maria Christina" as his "Oldest daughter." When Christina sponsored baptism for Anna Maria Baumann, daughter of George Baumann (Bowman) 2 May 1736, Rev. Johann Casper Stoever recorded her name as "Anna Christina Stephanin" and stated that she was the Spousa, of John "Lenvill". Spousa is the Latin term for "fiancee" and means that she was espoused to Lenvill (Linville), but not yet married, though they may have already announced their first banns. Stoever also recorded that the following day, May 3, 1736 he married two English couples at "Obeckon." One of these couples must have been John and Christina. The following year when Stoever returned to Virginia he baptized Lewis, the first child of John and Christina "Lenvill." John Linville's parents were English immigrants who settled among the predominantly German families of Chester and Lancaster Counties in the 1720s and then moved to Virginia in the 1730s.

The Linvilles were still in Frederick County in the summer of 1744 when Lewis Stephens brought suit against John "Lenwill" for slander. This suit was quickly settled out of court and dismissed (Fred. Co. Order Book "1,", p. 161). By the summer of 1747 John Linville had apparently left the area. In August 1747 Lawrence Snapp as assignee of John "Lenwill," who was assignee of Nathaniel Page, brought a suit against William Harman for debt (Order Book "2," p. 274). Apparently Linville had purchased an IOU from Page and then sold it to Snapp, his brother-in-law, who went to court to collect.

The evidence is that John Linville and his famiy moved to North Carolina with his brothers, William and Thomas about 1747 and then, on their own, pushed further south into the "Upcountry" of South Carolina. They lived for a while on what is now the Tyger River in Union and Newberry Counties. The Tyger was called "Linvil" River and "John Linvil's Path" and a tract called "Linvil's Stand" appear on a 1750 map of the area (Colonial Plats, Vol. "5," p. 179, South Carolina Archives). For some reason, probably Indian raids, they abondoned the area in the late 1750s and returned to Virginia, where John probably died before 1760. Their son, William, stated in his pension application that he was born in Frederick County, Virginia, in 1757. Christina was a widow when she took up land in Hampshire County, probably in the early 1770s. Christina "Linvile" signed a deposition in Hampshire County in 1777 for Lewis Stephens, verifying that she had purchased a particular tract of land on Cacapon River but sold it to "her brother Lewis Stephens" and had received payment in full (Joyner, Vol. V, p. 7).

Peter and William Linville, sons of John and Christina, were both living in Frederick County Virginia when they enlisted in the militia during the Revolutionary War. Peter served in Capt. Peter Helphinstine's Frederick County regiment in 1774-75 and William enlisted in a Georgia regiment that was recruiting in Virginia in 1777. After the Revoluntionary War, Peter moved to western Pennsylvania and William moved to South Carolina, then Georgia. The oldest son, Lewis Linville, returned to South Carolina "Upcountry" by 1785 and settled on Indian Creek in Laurens County and died there in 1822. John Linville, who married Elizabeth Shivedecker in Frederick County, Virginia in 1792, is probably a son of John and Christina. The gaps between the sons would suggest a number of daughters in this family also but none have been identified. (From material provided by Alice Eichholz, Montpelier, VT, Linville historian, editor of "Linville Roots" and author of The Linville Family in America (Baltimore, 1983)

Maria married John Linvill in 1736. John was born about 1710 in Chester County Pennsylvania and died about 1750 about age 40.

Children from this marriage were:

12 M    i. Lewis Lenvill was born on 20 Feb 1737 and died in 1822 in Laurens County, South Carolina at age 85.

13 M    ii. Peter Lenvill was born on 25 Apr 1750 and died on 19 Apr 1834 in Washington County, Pennsylvania at age 83.

14 M    iii. John Lenvill was born about 1755 and died in 1810-1820 in Harrison County, Virginia about age 55.

15 M    iv. William Lenvill was born on 25 Nov 1757 and died on 30 Nov 1842 in Lincoln County, Georgia at age 85.

4. Lorentz Stephen (Peter (Hans)1) was born from about 1718 to 1720 in Germany and died in 1776 in Frederick County, Virginia about age 58. Another name for Lorentz was Lawrence.

General Notes:
From Daniel Bly's book "From The Rhine To The Shenadah" volume III

Lorentz Stephan (Lawrence Stephens) (of Peter #14) was born in Germany abot 1718-20, married twice and died in Frederick Co., VA, in 1776. His first wife, whose name is unknown but by whom he had four children, died about 1752, and he married in 1754 to ANNA MARIA BAUMANN (MARY BOWMAN). She was born in Virginia, 29 Sept. 1735, daughter of George and Anna Maria (Hite) Bowman, and died in Frederick Co., VA, by Jan. 1820. Children: four by the first wife, seven by Mary.

The first record of Lawrence is his German signature, Lorentz Stephan, on an Orange County road petition dated January 1743 (Joyner, Vol. 1, p. 56). He received a deed for 225 acres from his father in April 1745 (Fred. Co. Deed Book, 1, p. 203). This is probably after he married and in June 1747 Lawrence was appointed overseer of a road in Frederick County. In August of the same year, Lawrence Stephens, a German Protestant appeared in Court to swear his oath of allegiance and naturalization (Fred. Co. Order Book 2, p. 257). This is evidence that he was born before his parents came to America, because native-born Americans did not need to be naturalized.

In February 1749 Lawrence Stephens was appointed a constable by the Frederick County Court. He may also have taken over from his brother Lewis, one of the first businesses in what was to become the town of Stephensburg, since he was licensed by the Frederick County Court to keep an Ordinary in July 1753 (Fred. Co. Order Books 3, p. 202 and 5, p. 69). Lawrence Stephens bought and sold considerable land in the area of Stephens City but apparently maintained his home on the 225 acres on the eastern side of the Great Wagon Road, which he received from his father's original tract in 1745. He left this land along with his house, to his wife Mary, in his will. He farmed out some of the other lands and in his will also referred to a sugar mill on one of his properties. Lawrence was a slave owner and the Rev. Peter Muhlenberg recorded that he baptized two children of Lawrence Stephens's slave, Bess, in February 1774 (Notebooks of Peter Muhlenberg, Virginia State Library, filed with the Shenandoah County Ministers' Returns and Marriage Bonds).

Lawrence Stephens and his brother, Peter Jr., both had sons baptized in May 1757, when Rev. Conrad Steiner of Frederick Maryland made a circuit to Virginia. Both infants were given the name Lorentz and baptismal sponsors were Lorentz and Margaretha Schnepp and Peter and Maria Magdelena Spiess. Lawrence Stephens wrote a will 10 July 1773. The will was probated 5 Nov. 1776 (Fred. Co. Will Book 4, p. 338). Mary Bowman, second wife of Lawrence Stephens is named in the will of her father, George Bowman, who also named Mary's children in a codicil to his will (Fred. Co. Will Book 3, p. 431). The fact that she was the second wife of Lawrence Stephens is proven by the fact that George William Stephens, a son of Mary (Bowman) Stephens, specifically named his full brothers and surviving half brother and sisters in his will in 1784 (Fred. Co. Will Book 8, p. 186). Mary named four sons, as heirs in her will, written in 1816 and probated in 1820 (Fred. Co. Deed Book 10, p. 522).

Lorentz married Anna Maria Baumann, daughter of George Bowman and Mary Hite, in 1752 in Frederick County, Virginia. Anna was born on 9 Nov 1735 in Frederick County, Virginia and died in Jan 1820 in Frederick County, Virginia at age 84. Another name for Anna was Bowman.

Children from this marriage were:

16 M    i. George William Stephens was born about 1755 in Frederick County, Virginia and died in 1789 in Lincoln County, Virginia about age 34.

General Notes: George William enlisted in the Frederick County militia during the Revolutionary War and spent the winter of 1777-78 at Valley Forge. Muster rolls and payroll accounts show that from February 1778 to May 1778 he was in Capt. John Steed's company of the Eighth Virginia Regiment (the German Regiment), at that time commanded by George's uncle, Colonel Abraham Bowman. Rev. Peter Muhlenberg, a Lutheran pastor, who was commissioned a Colonel in the Virginia militia in 1776, organized the German Regiment in the Shenandoah Valley soon after hostilities broke out. Under Muhlenberg and later under Bowman, the regiment fought in many key battles of the Revolutionary War. Since the Eighth Virginia and many others were already encamped at Valley Forge since December 1777, it is likely that George had actually been serving in another unit before being enrolled in Capt. Steed's company. When the winter camp at Valley Forge was abandoned, George was transferred to Paramus (New Jersey) and served in a regiment commanded by Colonel James Wood of Frederick County, Virginia. George was discharged in February 1779 and was at that time in a company of the Fourth Virginia Regiment under Colonel John Nevill. Shortly after the war, George left for Kentucky and took up land in Lincoln County in central Kentucky. He wrote a will in December 1784 naming his full brothers and half brother and sisters as his heirs. The will was probated in Harrodsburg, Kentucky in 1789 and in Frederick County, Virginia many years later (Fred. Co. Will Book 8, p. 186).

General Notes: From Daniel Bly's book "From The Rhine To The Shenadah" volume III

There was a tradition in various branches of the Snapp family that Lawrence Snapp's wife was Margaret Stephens and there is indeed considerable evidence to support this beyond a reasonable doubt. She is certainly the right age to be the third daughter of Peter Stephens. Lawrence Snapp grew up in the same neighborhood as the Stephens family and from the late 1740s to the end of his life he had business transactions and dealings with them. In 1757 Lawrence and Margaret Snapp sponsored the baptism of a son of Lawrence Stephens and they themselves named children Peter and Christina. The settlements of Lawrence Snapp's estate and Henry Stephens's estate show continued business and monetary transactions between Snapp and members of the Stephens family after he moved to Shenandoah County.

Lawrence and Margaret sold their Stephensburg properties and moved further up the Valley to what is present-day Shenandoah County in 1764. Lawrence purchased 450 acres from John Funk Jr. at the mouth of Tumbling Run, a mile south of Strasburg and over the next decade acquired over 1700 acres in that neighborhood. Lawrence Snapp was among those who helped build the first Lutheran Church building in Strasburg by 1769 and he and his family remained active in the church. Lawrence Snapp wrote a will in April 1782 and it was probated in June (Shen. Co. Will Book A, p. 420).

Margaret had use of half the house and garden for the rest of her life along with the services of a slave woman Hannah. Margaret wrote a will 9 May 1801 and it was probated 14 July 1801 (Shen. Co. Will Book E, p. 446). She must have been a highly regarded and well beloved woman because nine of her ten children named a daughter Margaret. For a more complete account of Lawrence Snapp, his ancestors and the children of Lawrence and Margaret, see the SNAPP Chapter of Volume I.

Margaretha married Lorentz Schnepp, son of Johannes Schnepp\John Snapp and Barbara, in 1745 in Frederick County, Virginia. Lorentz was born in 1723 in Mulhausen, Alsace, Germany and died in Jun 1782 in Shenandoah County, Virginia at age 59. Another name for Lorentz was Lawrence Snapp.

General Notes:
From Daniel Bly's book "From The Rhine To The Shenadah" volume III

Peter served in the Revolutionary War as a private and as a sergeant. See
Bounty Warrant in Archives of Virginia State Library, Richmond. The last
record found on Peter in Frederick Co. was dated 1766. He moved his family
to Montgomery Co. VA about 1767, along with his brother-in-law, Abraham
Chrisman. Mary, a granddaughter of Jost Hite, was baptized 2 May 1737 by Rev.
John Casper Stover.
Peter received approximately 200 acres of his father's original tract in June 1753 and his father reconfirmed this in his will in 1757. Peter Jr. eventually purchased several other properties, which he sold in 1767-68. By 1767 he had moved south to the New River area of present-day Montgomery County, Virginia (then part of Boutetourt and later Fincastle), and first appears in tax records there in 1770. Peter apparently had a patent tract and purchased an additional 200 acres from his brother-in-law, Abraham Chrisman in 1786. His land was on Meadow Creek, a branch of Strouble's Creek in Montgomery County.

County records show that Peter was exempted from paying poll tax and tithes in 1793. Exemption was usually granted to men over 65. One of the last records of Peter is sale of 195 acres to his son David in 1805 (Mont. Co. Deed Book D, p. 298). There is no will or estate settlement for Peter Stephens Jr. but the names of his children are found in the settlement of the estate of their grandfather, Jacob Chrisman of Frederick County, Virginia. Chrisman wrote a will in September 1777, naming his daughter Mary as an heir. The will was probated in Oct. 1778, and by the time the first distribution of the estate was made in November 1787, Mary was deceased and her ten surviving children received her share of the Chrisman estate. The last distribution to heirs was made in 1795 (Fred. Co. Will Book 4, p. 402). Peter Stephens Jr., who appears n a 1779 militia list for Montgomery County, died at the Battle of Camden (South Carolina) in the Revolutionary War.

Peter married Anna Marie Chrisman, daughter of Jacob Chrisman and Magdalena Hite, in 1754 in Frederick County, Virginia. Anna was born on 29 Sep 1735 in Frederick County, Virginia and died before 1787 in Montgomery County, Virginia.

Children from this marriage were:

8. Johann Heinrich Stephen (Peter (Hans)1) was born on 8 Apr 1734 in Frederick County, Virginia and died in Nov 1767 in Frederick County, Virginia at age 33. Another name for Johann was Henry.

General Notes:
From Daniel Bly's book "From The Rhine To The Shenadah" volume III

Rev. John Casper Stover baptized Henry 16 May 1735 at Opequeon. Henry died when he was only 33 years old, without a will. A search of records by Dan V. Stephens produced the name of only two of his children: Henry Jr. and Gabriel. Since the wills of Henry's brothers, Lewis and Lawrence, name their
children and his other brother, Peter Jr., moved all his family to Montgomery Co. VA, all other children of this time period have been placed as children of Henry and Elizabeth. Frederick Co. VA Order Book 14, p.96, ordered that Elizabeth was to administer the estate of Henry Stephens. Order Book, p.105,
assigned to Elizabeth Reed, late Elizabeth Stephens, relict of Henry, her dower in the lands, December 1782.
Farmer
Henry Stephens was one of the first children born to settlers in the Shenandoah Valley and was already over a year old when Rev. Johann Casper Stoever baptized him at Opequon, 16 May 1735. Stoever was a Reformed pastor from Pennsylvania, who made the first of several circuits to the fledgling German community in Virginia that spring. Henry was already a young married man when his father died and he was left a tract of 300 acres where he now lives. This was part of the 570 acres Henry's father received by patent in 1752.

Henry Stephens was appointed overseer of a road in Frederick County in May 1757 and during the years of the French and Indian War he also served in the county militia. He was listed on Lewis Stephens's muster roll in October 1758 and was discharged from further duty in John Hite's and Lewis Stephens's Company of the Frederick County regiment, 31 Oct. 1760 (Fred Co. Order Book 7, p. 189 and Militia Records in Deed Book 18). On 7 August 1767, Elizabeth Stephens appeared in Frederick County Court and qualified as administrator of the estate of her husband Henry Stephens deceased, Lewis Stephens co-signed the bond with her (Fred. Co. Will Book 4, p. 557). By 1782 when she was assigned her dower interest in Henry's land she was remarried to a man named Reid (Fred. Co. Order Book, 18, Dec. 1782 Court). Her husband was probably the James Reid, living in the Stephens City area, in the 1782 census of Frederick County. Henry's oldest son Gabriel died while a prisoner-of-war under the British in the Revolutionary War. Henry Jr. the next oldest son became heir at law to their father's land (Fred. Co. Deed Books 48, p. 23 and 50, p. 279). David was listed in the personal property tax records of 1787 with Henry Stephens Jr.

Johann married Elizabeth about 1755 in Frederick County, Virginia. Elizabeth was born about 1736.

Children from this marriage were:

48 M    i. Gabriel Stephens was born about 1756 in Frederick County, Virginia and died on 1 Mar 1777 in Fort Washington, New York about age 21.

General Notes: Gabriel was a bachelor at the time of his death.
Gabriel Stephens (of Henry #21) was born in Frederick Co., VA, about 1756, never married and died at Fort Washington (Manhattan), NY, 1 Mar. 1777. He died while a prisoner of the British during the Revolutionary War.

Gabriel was recruited along with a number of other young men from the New Town area, into Abraham Shepherd's Regiment of Volunteer Riflemen about the first of August, 1776. This company soon joined with the Continental Line and in the fall of 1776 marched to New York to defend Fort Washington, on the northern end of Manhattan Island. They arrived there but were soon surrounded and besieged in the Battle of King's Bridge. The American soldiers were outnumbered and finally surrendered to the British. They were imprisoned in old sugar warehouses and suffered from cold and hunger. Consequently, most of them died before the winter was over. (Danse Dandridge, Historical Shepherdstown, pp. 150-175). Gabriel was the oldest son of Henry and upon his death his brother Henry Jr. became the heir-at-law to their father's land at Stephens City (Frederick Co. Deed Book 50, p. 279).

49 M    ii. Henry Stephens Jr. was born about 1758 in Frederick County, Virginia and died on 24 Nov 1826 in Frederick County, Virginia about age 68.

50 M    iii. Peter Stephens was born in 1760 in Frederick County, Virginia and died on 10 Mar 1838 in Clinton County, Ohio, USA at age 78.

51 F    iv. Elizabeth Stephens was born about 1762 in Frederick County, Virginia and died by 1784 about age 22.

   52 M    v. David Stephens was born about 1765.

David married Susanna McGraw in 1790.

Third Generation (Grandchildren)

9. Peter Stephens (Ludwig Sr2, Peter (Hans)1) was born in 1742 in Frederick County, Virginia and died in 1783 in Frederick County, Virginia at age 41.

General Notes: Peter and Barbara were deeded 254 acres on Opequon Creek by her father in 1766 and also 439 acres from his father in September 1766 (Fred. Co. Deed Book 11, pp. 180-2). They sold the 254 acres to Lewis Wolff in 1771 and sold the 439 acres back to his father on a mortgage deed. At the same time Lewis Stephens deeded them another 200 acres on the Buffalo Marsh, which was for their use but was to go to their son, Lewis, when he became age 21 (Fred. Co. Deed Book 15, pp. 143-4). Peter Stephens, son of Lewis, is probably the Peter Stephens who was a surveyor for Lord Fairfax between 1762 and 1770. Peter died before August 1783 when his son, Lewis, age 17 next October, was indentured to Frederick Conrad, to learn farming (Fred. Co. Order Book 18, p. 195). The other children are named in the will of Mary Hening Stephens, widow of Lewis Jr., who left part of her estate to her husband's nieces and nephews (Fred. Co. Will Book and Deed Book 60, pp. 6-8). Nellie, whose marriage was reported in the Winchester Sentinel, apparently died young without children

He enlisted for his first tour of duty in March 1776 and served under General Daniel Morgan, and was principally engaged in suppressing the Tories. Later that year he served under Major Gilkerson and was supposed to go to Fort Pitt (now Pittsburgh) but extreme cold forced cancellation of that mission. He then helped guard Tory prisoners at Winchester. In 1780 he was drafted for atour but hired a substitute instead. He described his tours of duty in depositions made for a pension application in March 1832 and August 1833. (From his pension application #S-17703).

Soon after his discharge from the militia, Jacob followed his brother, George William to Lincoln County in central Kentucky. The area where he settled and established his home eventually became Christian County, Kentucky. He also owned over 2000 acres in Jefferson County Kentucky and was owner of many slaves. In 1817 he moved to Madison County, Missouri. The full record of Jacob's family is from his family Bible, cited in the revised edition of Dan V. Stephens, Peter Stephens and Some of His Descendants (1940).

From there they went into the interior of Kentucky. He first settled at Bardtown, Kentucky but after 1789 he purchased most of the land which his deceased brother, George William had owned near Bowling Green in present-day Warren County, Kentucky. Joseph was only 17 when he enlisted in the Virginia militia in the summer of 1781 and served under Capt. Keckley, of the Frederick County Militia for a term of three months. He returned home after the surrender of Cornwallis and married a few years later. Shortly after marriage, Joseph and Nancy headed for Kentucky and settled in what is now Bourbon County, but was then, Lincoln County. He is said to have established the first permanent farm and home in what became Bourbon County. He owned a large number of slaves who cleared and worked his extensive land holdings and built a brick residence for the family. Joseph's second wife Lucy was a niece of James Garrard, an early Kentucky governor. Joseph applied for a pension based on his Revolutionary war service in November 1833 and provided his birth and marriage dates and information on his service. The record of his family is from Dan V. General Notes: Henry Earnest was a youth when he left Switzerland with his parents in 1742. Both parents died on the voyage across the Atlantic and Henry moved to Virginia as a young man, and according to family tradition worked for Lawrence Stephens. Henry served in the Frederick County militia in the French and Indian War under Capt. George Mercer. By the early 1770s the Earnest family was in District 96 of the Upcountry of South Carolina and may have gone there as early as 1766 with other Frederick County families, including Jacob and Sarah (Stephens) Bowman. The Earnest family moved to western North Carolina (the part that became Tennessee) in the early 1780s and Henry was one of the commissioners who helped lay off Greene County in 1783. They settled at the mouth of Limestone Creek in the valley of the Nolachucky River and in 1790 helped organize the first Methodist congregation in that region. The names of many of their children appear along with those of the Snapps and the family of John Stephens (below) on deeds, surveys and other records in Greene County.

128 F    xii. Rebecca Earnest was born on 25 May 1785 and died in 1880 at age 95.

Rebecca married Samuel Weaver in Tennessee.

24. Sarah Stephens (Lorentz2, Peter (Hans)1) was born on 25 Mar 1745 in Frederick County, Virginia and died on 7 May 1839 in Gerrard County, Kentucky at age 94.

General Notes: Sarah Stephens was born March 25, 1745, daughter of Lawrence Stephens and his first wife, and granddaughter of Peter Stephens. Her birth and death dates are recorded on a family gravestone in Garrard County, Kentucky.

Sometime before 1767 when her eldest son Jacob Jr, was born she married (John) Jacob Bowman, son of George Bowman and Mary Hite. Jacob was her step-uncle. Jacob's sister, Mary Bowman married Sarah's father Lawrence Stephens when Sarah was about seven years old. No record of Sarah and Jacob's marriage has been found and it is not known if they were married in Virginia or South Carolina.

According to the letter of John Bryan Bowman, who was President of the Kentucky University 1865-1871and grandson of Jacob's brother, Col. Abraham Bowman. filed in the Draper Papers, Jacob Bowman moved to South Carolina after the death of his father in 1764. Jacob is listed as owning land in Laurens Co, South Carolina on the Reedy River in 1764 adjoining land owned by George Wright, his brother-in-law.
Jacob served as a commissioner to lay out a road from Carson's Ferry to Reedy River, 1770. In 1778 he was elected to the Third South Carolina General Assembly for the 1779/1780 term.
In 1782 Jacob Bowman, who by some accounts was killed in the doorway of his mill by Indians or Tories dressed as Indians. Sarah filed for estate administration in October of 1782. She and Jacob had seven known children, Jacob Jr. b.1767, Mary (Polly) b. 1768, John , Sarah (Sally), Rebecca, Nancy, Geroge E, b. 1782.. Sarah was left with minor children, a farm, a mill and slaves to oversee.
During the remaining years of the Revolution, Sarah is listed in the South Carolina Archives as supplying provisons and rations for the Militia on many occasions from 1779 through February 1783 for a total of 887 Pounds for which she received satisfaction for 761 Pounds. She is recognized as a Patriot by South Carolina.
Sarah Bowman is listed in Laurens Co, SC records in 1787/88.
In 1795/96 Sarah and her son Jacob Jr. sold most of their South Carolina lands to Jacob Niswanger, son-in-law of Sarah Bowman Wright. and soon after Sarah, with her grown and minor children moved to Kentucky, possibly to enable Jacob Jr to resolve his inheritance from Maj. Joseph Bowman, his uncle. Maj. Joseph Bowman, who was second in Command under Gen.George Rogers Clark in the Illinois Campaign, died Aug 14, 1779. Jacob Bowman, Sr. became his heir-at-law under the then current law of primogeniture of Virginia. At the time of his death Kentucky was still a county of Virginia and Joseph's lands that he acquired with the Hite-Bowman Land Company fell under that law. When Jacob Sr. died in 1782 the estate devolved to Jacob, Jr.
Jacob Jr. and John Bowman first settled in Mercer Co. and Sarah and the other children were probably with them, but about the time Jacob Jr's claim was settled in 1802 Sarah was in Garrard Co. on part of the property from Joseph Bowman's estate at Bowman's Bend on the Kentucky River. Sarah apparently had her own home close to the river, but her son George built a home there about 1816 that still stands today. Sarah died May 7, 1839.
A large stone obelisk marks her resting place along with other members of the family.
Endnote: for many years the reputation of Jacob Bowman lay under a cloud.. Early historians confused him with other Jacob Bowmans, attributing the wrong wives to him and accused him of being a Tory. It seems to have started with Cartmell who confused him with a Capt. John Bowman who died at Ramsour's Mill. That John Bowman was a Scotch-Irishman who was married to Grizell Greenlee. That family is well documented and is not our Jacob Bowman.
Wayland in "The Bowmans- a Pioneering Family of Kentucky and the Northwest Territories" quotes Cartmell and then adds information based on information given by Bowman family members who may have been misinformed. . Wayland states that Jacob was a member of the South Carolina House of Burgesses. That is incorrect, Jacob was a member of the third General Assembly under the new government which required an oath of loyalty of South Carolina citizens. It is highly unlikely that Jacob would have been elected if he were a Tory. Sarah's claims for compensation, which seem to predate Jacob's death, also lend strong evidence that they were supporters of the of the Revoultion. Other's have named a Susannah Millhouse as wife of Jacob Bowman. That is also a different Jacob Bowman., whose family has also been well documented. Finally, it is unlikely that Jacob's political beliefs would have been so different from his brother's, four of whom were officers in the revolution. Later relations between members of the family, do not seem to support such a division in belief.

Jacob Bowman, oldest son of George Bowman was born about the time the family settled in Virginia and grew up on the frontier in the Shenandoah Valley. During the French and Indian War he was a captain in the Frederick County militia. He was named executor in his father's will and was bequeathed 500 acres on Linville Creek in August County (present-day Rockingham County) Virginia. By the time his father died in March 1768 Jacob was already living in South Carolina and sold the land on Linville Creek in November 1768 (August Co. Deed Book 15, pp. 151-61). He took up land on Reedy River in what is present-day Laurens County, South Carolina, and appears in various records of old District 96 (now Laurens County) until his death in 1781 or '82. He was elected to the Third South Carolina General Assembly 1778 for the 1779/80 term. He operated a mill on the Reedy River and by some accounts was killed in the doorway of his mill, possibly by Tory sympathizers dressed as Indians.

Some earlier accounts of the Bowman family report that Jacob supported the British government at the time of the American Revolution and died fighting for the British at the Battle of Ramsour's Mill, in South Carolina, in June 1780 (John W. Wayland, The Bowmans (Staunton, VA), 1943). Documentary records now prove that Wayland and others confused a John Bowman, of Scots-Irish descent, who died in the Battle of Ramsour's Mill, with John Jacob Bowman from Virginia. Irish descent, who died in the Battle of Ramsour's Mill, with John Jacob Bowman from Virginia. Jacob Bowman was no where near Ramsour's Mill and died in late 1781 or 1782, not 1780. On 20 Oct. 1782 Sarah Bowman posted bond with Samuel Rosamund and Samuel Wharton as surety to administer the estate of Jacob Bowman deceased. A panel consisting of Ebenezer Storms, John Hughes and Duke Pinson met at the home of Sarah Bowman on 8 Jan. 1783 to appraise the personal property of her husband, Jacob Bowman, deceased. If Jacob had been a British Loyalist his estate would have been confiscated, not appraised and distributed to heirs (Pauline Young, Abstracts of Old Ninety-Six and Abbeville District Wills and Bonds, 1977). Sarah Bowman of Laurens County, South Carolina, gave her son, Jacob Bowman Jr. power of attorney to collect money due her from the estate of her father, Lawrence Stephens. Jacob Bowman Jr. son and heir at law of Jacob Sr. was still in Laurens County, South Carolina, in 1789 when the estate of his unmarried uncle, Joseph Bowman was settled. Sarah Bowman, widow of Jacob Bowman and Jacob Bowman Jr., heir-at-law, sold their land on Reedy River in Laurens County to Jacob Niswanger in 1795 and moved to Mercer County, Kentucky, about that time.
According to documents filed in a Mercer County (Kentucky) chancery suit involving the heirs of Sarah Stephens Bowman, Jacob Bowman died in South Carolina in late 1781 and Sarah and the family moved to Kentucky in 1795. Sarah died intestate in Garrard County, Kentucky, in May 1839 (Thomas and wife vs Bowman: Mercer County Chancery Cases, File Box T #39). Sarah is buried in a family cemetery at Bowman's Bottom, Gerrard County, Kentucky. Jacob was about a dozen years older than Sarah and she may have, in fact, been a second wife but all the children are by Sarah.

Sarah married Johann Jacob Baumann, son of Hans Georg Baumann and Anna Marie Hite, in 1766. Johann was born on 2 Dec 1733 and died in 1781-1782 in South Carolina at age 48. Another name for Johann was Jacob Bowman.

25. John Stephens (Lorentz2, Peter (Hans)1) was born in 1748 in Frederick County, Virginia and died on 17 Mar 1819 in Preble County, Ohio, USA at age 71.

General Notes: During the conflict with the Indians of the Ohio frontier, called Dunmore's War, John served in Capt. Peter Helphenstine's Regiment of Frederick County militia for at least three months in 1774-75. No sooner had that struggle concluded than the Revolution War broke out, and John remained in the militia for much of that conflict, serving under General Daniel Morgan and participating the siege of Quebec, where he was captured and subsequently released.

John married and lived in Frederick County, Virginia, ntil about 1790 and then moved further south to Rockbridge County, Virginia. By 1804 he and his family had moved to Sullivan County, Tennessee, where they lived for about five years. In the fall of 1809 he and most of his family (the older sons stayed in Tennessee) moved to the wilderness of Preble County in western Ohio, where he took up land in the Miami River Valley. A tradition among descendants of John is that John and his family were among the earliest converts to Methodism in Shenandoah Valley. This may well be, since the Methodist did have a congregation in Stephens City before John and his family left. In 1789 Lewis Stephens sold the Methodist congregation in Stephens City a lot on which to build a church (Fred. Co. Deed Book 21, p. 1110). A number of sons of John Stephens became Methodist ministers.

John married Jeanette Vance, daughter of David Vance and Unknown, on 9 Mar 1779 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Jeanette was born about 1760 in Shenandoah County, Virginia and died on 15 Sep 1828 in Eaton, Preble County, Ohio, USA about age 68.

General Notes:
From Daniel Bly's book "From The Rhine To The Shenadah" volume III

About 1767 Lawrence went to Montgomery Co. VA with his parents. In 1775 he
enlisted in the army and served in the Revolutionary War as a private and a
corporal. See Clain S 7639 - Cert. 16465, Veterans Bureau, Washington D.C.
After the war he and his brother, Joseph, went to Wythe Co. where he located
on a 600 acre tract of land on Little Reed Island Creek, which he acquired
17 Aug 1793. His will is recorded in Carroll Co. Va in Will Book 1, p.148.
His estate was left to his children.
Lawrence was probably going on two years of age when he was baptized 3 May 1757, by Rev. Conrad Steiner of Frederick, Maryland, who made a circuit into the Shenandoah Valley. His baptismal sponsors were Lorentz Schnepp (Lawrence Snapp) and wife Margaretha. He was about twelve years old when his parents moved from Frederick County, soth to the New River Valley, in what is now Montgomery County, Virginia. When only about 20 he enlisted in the militia at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War and served in Captain William Campbell's company of the First Virginia Regiment. His company marched from Fincastle to Bedford, Virginia, shortly after his enlistment in September 1775 and then marched to Hampton Roads (Norfolk area) where they were to join a battle, but arrived too late. He was promoted from private to corporal in March 1776 and was stationed near Williamsburg, Virginia, when discharged in September 1776.

After the war, Lawrence and his brother, Joseph, moved on further south to what is now Carroll County in southwest Virginia, which in those days was still part of Wythe County. He acquired 200 acres on Little Reed Creek in August 1793. Like many of his generation he owned slaves but in 1793, as an act of conscience, freed his slaves. Lawrence applied for a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War in 1832 and in June 1833 made another deposition giving more details about his service. He also stated that he was born in Frederick County, Virginia in 1755. He obtained a pension of 42 dollars a year, beginning in 1834. Lawrence lived beyond the age of 90 and was a hardworking farmer and active citizen most of his long life.

Isaac fought in the Battle of Guilford Court House in March 1781, in the second battle of Camden in April 1781 and the Siege of 96 in South Carolina in May 1781. He returned home after the war and the following year married Rebecca. In 1799 they moved to Wayne County, Kentucky. In August 1832 Isaac applied for a pension and provided information on his service during the Revolutionary War and also reported that a brother (Peter) was killed at the Battle of Camden in April 1781. In 1801 he moved to Wayne Co. KY. In 1815 he and all his children, except Mary, moved to Tennessee. They lived there until 1817 when they moved to Cooper Co. Missouri.

Joseph was a boy when his family moved from Frederick County to Montgomery County, Virginia. About 1785 he moved to Wythe County and purchased 197 acres on Little Reed Creek near his brother Lawrence. By 1801 he sold his land and moved his family to Wayne County, Kentucky where they lived until 1815. They then went to Tennessee for several years and finally in November 1817 moved to Cooper County, in the heart of Missouri and took up land near the present-day town of Bunceton. Joseph and his family were among the first settlers in what was then a vast wilderness. The family lived in a lean-to the first winter and the nearest neighbor was at least seven miles away. Joseph and his large family eventually carved a large and thriving farm from the wilderness and his children became leading citizens of Missouri. (See Leven and Drake, The History of Cooper County, Missouri, Chapter xvii.) Joseph, his two wives and many of their children, are buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Bunceton, Missouri.

General Notes: The FREDERICK CO. VA MINUTE BOOK 1817-1820, p.287 states that Henry was the eldest brother and heir at law of Gabriel Stephens when he died.
Farmer
During the Revolutionary War, Henry Jr. enlisted in Capt. George Stubblefield's company of the Fifth Virginia Regiment, in August 1776, and served until April, 1777. He apparently married soon after returning home and lived at Stephens City the rest of his life. He inherited his father's land and lived there as a farmer. In Nov. 1822, Henry and Catherine sold 20 acres of his tract to Bryan Martin Stephens, and in March 1824 sold the remaining tract to Joseph Long. The deed specifically notes that the land was left to Henry Stephens by his father Peter, and that Gabriel Stephens as heir of Henry Sr. died intestate and the land therefore descended to the said Henry as heir at law and eldest brother of him the said Gabriel. (Fred. Co. Deed Books 46, p. 570 and 48, p. 23).

General Notes: Peter and his family were living in Frederick Co. Virginia according to the 1810 census, which listed 2 males age 0-10, 1 male age 10-16, 1 male age 45 & up, 1 female age 10-16, 1 female age 16-26, and 1 female age 45 & up. The two younger boys would be Adam and David. The older boy is not known. The girls would be Mary and Catherine. Christian, John, and Peter Jr. were married at this time. The family moved sometime between 1810 and 1813 to Clinton Co. Ohio. as their daughter, Mary, got married Jan. 10, 1813. The earliest land record found, shows that Peter bought 119 acres Dec. 13, 1816 on the waters of Anderson Fork, a part of the Carter Page survey #1728. This
land, on an 1859 map, is on the west side of Horseshoe Pike after the second bend in the road. His son, Christian, owned the land on his nothern boundary and the northwest corner of this land was at the corner of the Port William Pike and Horshoe Pike. Peter Jr. bought land on the east side of Horseshoe Pike extending to Anderson Creek. A plat of the Baptist (Sherrick) Cemetery, where Peter and Mary are buried, lists Peter as having served in the Revolutionary War. The land and cemetery was established in 1825 by W. Hobblett for a Baptist church. The first minister was Black Isaac, a freed black slave. This plat is in the Clinton Co. Engineer's Office. Peter died intestate
and a record to partition the land he owned could not be found in the Clinton Co. OH Common Pleas Court. Deeds have been found for Adam, Catherine, Christian, Peter G., John, Sarah, and the children of Mary, deceased, whereby they sold their share of the estate to David. Two of the deeds stated "their undivided ninth part..." but a deed for the ninth child has not been found. The
deeds are recorded in Clinton Co. in Book V, p.102-108 and filed Dec. 2, 1851. The missing child could likely be Andrew Stephens, born about 1790 in VA and living across the county line in Silvercreek Township of Green Co. Ohio. A document needs to be found to prove this relationship.
Farmer

Peter married Mary [---?---] about 1780. Mary was born in 1764 and died in May 1836 in Clinton County, Ohio, USA at age 72.

231 F    viii. Sarah Stephens was born between 1810 and 1815 in Ohio, USA.

General Notes: Sarah and Ezekiel were living in St. Joseph Co. Indiana in 1847 when they
sold their their share of her deceased father's land and lot #25 in Port
William to her brother, David. Sarah appeared on the 1820 census in the 10-16
age group and in the 1830 census in the 15-20 age group. The 1850 census
listed her age as 32 (b.1818), which is unlikely, and born in Ohio. Her mother
would have been 46 in 1810 and makes the child bearing years questionable. The
1840 census shows Sarah and Ezekiel living in St. Joseph Co. Indiana.

Sarah married Ezekiel Green between 1830 and 1840. Ezekiel was born about 1811 in DE.

He and his young bride moved to Kentucky, where several of their children were born, but ten years later returned to Virginia and lived at Stephens City. They lived at Stephens City the remainder of their lives and are buried in the old community cemetery there. Catherine was a granddaughter of George and Anna Maria (Hite) Bowman. Lewis is erroneously identified as a son of Henry Stephens (#21) in the Dan Stephens genealogy but the thorough research of Janice Carper of Catharpin, Virginia and the deed to Kercheval, which she found, proves that he is, in fact, a son of Peter and grandson of Lewis (#15).
