As most of you know, I am retiring as RIGenWeb Coordinator on February 1, 2005. Although it is no longer linked, the original message I posted is still available for your reference at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/RIGenWebCoordinator.html
There are two qualified candidates. On January 8, 2005 an election period of two weeks will begin. The members of this list will be voting. Additional information will be provided at that time.
To help us decide who gets our vote, I have asked each candidate to create a page that tells us a little about themselves, why they would like to be the new RIGenWeb State Coordinator, and their qualifications.
I also asked each to create a page or two using a few samples of actual donated material (a small Excel document, part of a basic Word document of obituaries, and two digital cemetery images). Look for the links on each candidate's page.
This exercise was to give the candidates an idea of what is sometimes involved, and to give the voters a chance to see what each does with the same material. For those who are curious, the samples can be found at https://sites.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/samples/
The candidates and their pages (in alphabetical order by surname) are:
Susan Irish Nahas http://members.aol.com/whatcom59/RIcampaign.html
Sandra Quinn https://sites.rootsweb.com/~ohathens/sandramitchellquinnri.htm
Each has contact information on their page in case you have questions. They have been asked to add their responses, when appropriate, to their candidacy page.
Susan W. Pieroth
I have decided to retire as the Coordinator of the Rhode Island USGenWeb Project (RIGenWeb) effective February 1, 2005. I began about eight years before that date, and I think it's time to pass the baton and work on other things. I will continue as Coordinator of the Newport County, RIGenWeb.
When I began Brenda Bova was already a County Coordinator and Arlan Maquire joined the project not long after that. They have stayed with me the whole time, each taking on a second county. They have both indicated they do not wish to move up to State Coordinator, but they, too, will remain as County Coordinators.
So, we are looking for volunteers and/or nominees to take my place. We will hold an election of all those who qualify for the position, probably in January. The members of this list will be the voters. More on the workings of that when we get closer to that date.
QUALIFICATIONS and JOB REQUIREMENTS for RIGenWeb State Coordinator:
Although a love of genealogy and sharing is important, the ability to create basic web pages is the primary function of this volunteer job.
If you already have a personal website that you created, update regularly and load using an FTP program, than you can probably handle this part of the work. In internet genealogy many researchers are using computers that are not filled with the latest program. I know some who still have Windows 95, and a large group has Windows 98. For this reason, and because of concerns about programs that do things behind the scenes, simple is best.
One specific HTML requirement is the ability to transform Excel files and Word documents into web pages without bloat. For those who haven't done it, it means eliminating all the junk that Microsoft likes to throw in when a file is converted to HTML. I, and many others, keep a copy of Microsoft Office 97 just for that purpose - it's less bloated. Still, knowing something about the coding behind a page is necessary.
There is a RootsWeb Help mailing list for web page design problems, as well as web sites listed on USGenWeb.org that can provide extra assistance with specific problems. A State Coordinator is also a member of a State Coordinators mailing list and thus has those people to provide guidance on other issues.
There are no queries for the State Coordinator to maintain. The RIGenWeb Mailing List is currently maintained by Arlan.
Coordinators are NOT expected to do research for others, only point the way to where the material can be found, or where someone might know the answer (such as the RIGenWeb Mailing List).
The website will remain on RootsWeb where it is both free and unlimited. All information that is there will remain, and the new Coordinator will pledge to leave all material. Donations are considered a contribution to the Project, not to the individual Coordinator, and can not be removed except at the request of the contributor.
Time - how much will you need? I began as the State Coordinator when I was working full time. Getting submissions on the website can obviously take time, but it is still flexible time and usually takes no more than six to eight hours a week at peak load. I will be available to answer questions, but I will not be working on the pages after February 1st.
If you have questions, please write me directly. If you have a nomination, or would like to volunteer, please do that on the list. However, for now please don't discuss the subject in depth on the list.

P. S. One of the qualifications
I should have mentioned pertains to graphics. The candidate needs to be
able to create thumbnail images and, as necessary, improve the quality
of an image submitted. An ability to scan works is also very useful. Since
space is not limited, scanned documents provide a primary document and
confirmation of transcriptions.
