Some Immigrants Listed In 1884 Census of Lares

By

Miguel Hernández Torres

The following is a list of some of the immigrants residing in Lares, PR in 1884 and was obtained from "Lares en su Historia" (pg. 29-32) by Professor Ché Paralitici of the University of Puerto Rico. Ediciones Coa, Apartado 33323, San Juan, PR 00904 is the publisher. I found the book to be an excellent genealogical resource. It is out of print but the Coperativa de Ahorro y Credito de Lares may have some copies for sale. I do not have their exact address.

To make it easier to find an ancestor I transcribed the census in alphabetical surname order. A question mark indicates that a surname or name is unknown or not clear. Several of the places of origin of the person are listed in the census simply as España or Peninsular as opposed to the specific Spanish province. Although I could make an educated guess on the province based on other research I chose to leave the origin as noted in the census You will also note that several persons are from countries other than Spain and interestingly enough, two persons,Gaspar and Crispina, (no surnames) are listed as being labradores (laborers) from Africa.

The Antonio López pictured below, is one of several ships that brought immigrants from Spain to Puerto Rico in the 19th century.
