| What kind of information is available in the Guia Oficial General de Puerto Rico (Guia) for 1897? The book contains a listing by government office and/or town of individuals who held positions in government and clergy during 1897. The Guia includes the names of government officials, engineers, doctors, pharmacists, educators and the board members of the Damas de Honor y Merito. The last two categories noted are the only ones in which the names of females will be found. |
| How will the Guia help your research? If you are fortunate to have had a family member hold a government position, you should be able to determine the position and the town in which they held this position. This will assist you as to where to focus your civil and church record research for the time period around 1897. Unfortunately, the Guia was published with a fairly inadequate index for the purposes of genealogical research. The different sections of the Guia are indexed by subject. But, if you were to attempt to locate a family member in the Guia, you would need to conduct a page by page review of all 636 pages to determine whether an individual is listed in the directory. |
| The frustration resulting from the Guia's rudimentary index led PRHGS to ask its members for assistance in extracting all of the names (more than 5000) and the numbers of the corresponding pages where the names are located for entry into a database. Once the first team completed the extraction of names and data entry, a second team assumed the responsibility of proofreading all of the entries. The result is a database that includes the first name, first or single surname, second surname and page number in the Guia where the name is located. Many names appear more than once if the person held more than one position. Also, several surnames appear more than once with slightly different spellings. No corrections to spelling have been made. All entries appear just as they do in the Guia. |
| As part of PRHGS' mission in opening up the availability of genealogical research materials to the family historian, we placed the Surname Index to the Guia Oficial General de Puerto Rico (1897) on the society's web page. In this manner, all researchers will have access to the index and the possibility of locating an ancestor. Two of our volunteers found ancestors amongst the pages they were extracting. We hope that there will be many more success stories. |
| Where can I located a copy of the Guia? The purpose of this index is to assist researchers in determining whether they need to locate the Guia for further consultation. The availability of the Guia Oficial General de Puerto Rico is quite limited. PRHGS has determined that copies are available at: * Colección Puertorriqueña de la Biblioteca José M. | Surnames with "de" or "de la" are alphabetized in the index with the "de" or "de la" behind the surname that follows. This will facilitate finding ancestors who, over time, may have dropped the "de" or "de la" before the surname (e.g., de la Vega appears as Vega, de la). |
