BIRTH RECORDS
- Since 1906, civil registration occurred at the state level. Click on Pennsylvania Vital Records for not only an address for the Pennsylvania Department of Health but also a link to a downloadable form for requesting a birth certificate.
- For 1893-1905, civil registration occurred at the county level. Write to Clerk of the Orphans Court and Register of Wills Office which is in the Courthouse in Montrose.
- Before 1893, no vital statistics available. However, delayed birth certificates may exist for persons attempting to prove qualification for Social Security benefits after 1937. These records are usually filed in the county where the individual applied which may not be the county of birth. Again, check the Clerk of the Orphans Court and Register of Wills Office. Also, it is helpful to know that some birthdates are noted in church baptism/christening records. Perhaps the best available group of these can be found at the Susquehanna County Historical Society in Montrose.
