Preface: The attached report includes pictures throughout. It begins with Samuel McCarty's ancestors, followed by an outline format of his descendants. Further down comes a regular genealogy report for Samuel McCarty's descendants. Throughout we tried to eliminate any information that might offend anyone who is alive. In regards to birth dates, we have eliminated the month and day for living individuals. The numbers to the left in the report, more or less, are continuations of the way David Bailey listed the people in Settlers XLV: The McCarty Heritage. This format was a continuation of the way the enumerations were done in the original history: The Descendants of James Carrell and Sarah Dungan, His Wife, by Ezra Patterson Carrell. Gerald McCarty deserves the lead credit for contacting all his relatives and gathering all their information. You can contact either of us with any questions or problems.

Samuel
had a farm past Lincoln Falls on top of the hill about a mile towards Shunk.
There is a pond on the left and the road jogs and climbs a little. The
homestead's of Samuel's and Joshua's farms are still in the family, owned by
Howard's son Ronald H. McCarty. Ronnie remodeled the original home and it is
distinquished by two large pillars and now a natural gas well. Samuel's father
Joshua's homestead was the next farm on the left. Samuel's son Howard J. bought
and farmed both places for 40 years but lived in across the road. Howard's and
Robert's family lived in that small house, Their wives were sisters. Jessamine
and Arrowanna "Mattie" Battin. Robert worked in as a cab driver in
N.Y. state so he was gone alot. Robert moved back around 1962 and they moved to
Franklindale, Pa. When Robert retired from Towanda Courthouse about 1974 they
bought the Joshua home with ¾ acre from Howard. Kenneth L. and Mary J. McCarty
also lived at Joshua's place the first year's of their marriage around 1940. After
Robert died the Joshua homestead was sold to Kenny Day but is presently
occupied by Lester Pardoe, it's unknown if he owns it. There were a lot of
memories of family gatherings and the potluck feast at Thanksgiving, etc."

"Some of you may have noticed a reference to Aunt
Nellie's Button Box as a symbol for a lot of STUFF to look through as on the
obituary pages of this site. Well, Aunt Nellie's button box was a real thing in
my childhood and in my life.
When
I was a child I used to stay sometimes with Great Aunt Nellie. I really loved
her dearly. She was the sister-in-law of my grandmother who died at age thirty
when my father was only four years old. She and her husband, Harold Mudge, had
wanted to adopt my father but my grandfather determined to raise my father and
his older brother alone. Nevertheless, Aunt Nellie, and other aunts and uncles
and grandmothers and grandfathers played a very important role in bringing up
my father and uncle. When I came along many years later, Aunt Nellie and Uncle
Harold slipped into the role of grandparent substitutes for me. One of the many
great pleasures of spending time with them - aside from the Chinese Checkers
and the National Geographics at their house - was the tin canister that was
filled with buttons. They were great playthings, all the colors, all the
shapes, all the patterns - fascinating! It was a special privilege to be given
the button box to play with. Matching them up into a set, sorting them, piling
them, looking at them. It is amazing what a child can do with a large tin full
of buttons, thousands of them. Just running them through one's fingers is a
pleasure - like King Midas with his gold.
Years later, Aunt Nellie in
her migration to Ohio to live with her daughter, gave the button box to my
mother and she gave it to me. I used to sew a lot, and from a practical point
of view, it seemed a logical thing to do. I would make good use of it. Well, I
still approached it as a treasure chest. Even as an adult that is what it
seemed to be to me. I found all kinds of interesting things in that box and I
traipsed off to the library to find out what all those beautiful buttons were
about. Through the books I found I was able to identify buttons far older than
I would ever have expected. From the way the manufacturer's name
was on the back of some of the large metal buttons, they could be dated.
Manufacturers, then as now, changed their names every few years as partnerships
and ownership and corporate structure changed. So, I was able to determine in
the 1970s that many of these buttons were from very early in the century and
some even from the nineteenth century. I found Civil War military buttons that
had to have come from Truman Mudge's uniforms put there in the button box by
his grieving mother Lucy BRONSON (Mudge). I found glass buttons, beautifully
faceted black glass buttons in many patterns. There were rubber buttons and
calico buttons. They were small and made of glass and had patterns like calico
on them. I found flower shaped buttons that I arranged into a framed landscape
"painting." There were bone underwear buttons, and shoe buttons, and
tons and tons of dark green plastic buttons that probably came from Uncle
Harold's green work clothes. I even found a few political buttons. In short,
the button box represented several generations of the Mudge Family from which
my paternal grandmother originated. It was a link to the past and to people
whom I could never meet.
While I can not confirm the
path of ownership of the button box and its many contributors, I believe, based
on the ages of the buttons, that it had belonged to Lucy BRONSON (Mudge) and to
her daughter in law Ruth HOLLY (Mudge) and to her daughter in law, Nellie
McCARTY (Mudge) and then to me. All three of these women lived in the same
location in the house where my grandmother Mildred Mudge grew up with her
siblings, Helen and Harold. It is still a treasure to me. Most of the oldest
buttons I have arranged on display arrangements. Some of the lesser
(historical) value buttons I really did recycle and use. One thing for sure, I
have never thrown out a single one of them. They are part of the
"inheritance" from my ancestors and a link to objects, however
trivial, that were theirs. I love my button box."

"Amos
was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Sullivan Township,
Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lucy and Amos were living with their first child,
Helen. The property on which they lived on Gray Valley Road between Elk Run
(Chandlersburg at that time) and Gray Valley remained in the Mudge family until
about 1954 when Aunt Nellie sold it after Uncle Harold's death. The house that
Lucy and Amos lived in, was on the other side of the road from where the later
Mudge house, which still stands, was built.
In
the Census of 1850, Amos was listed as a head of household in Sullivan
Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Amos was a farmer with property worth
$800. This is the property on Gray Valley Road just above the center of Bungy
where Harold and Nellie Mudge lived until the mid 1950s.

was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Sullivan Township,
Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Amos was listed as the head of a family on the 1870
Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Amos was listed as the

Amos
did not, it would appear from data, have a good life, at least not in the
beginning. His mother died when he was four or so, his father when he was
seven. He may have been brought up by his uncle Aaron Mudge who was executor of
Ira's will or even by his brother Cornish who was 19 at the time of Ira's
death. Amos' first marriage apparently lasted a long time as Lucy did not die
until she was 61 years old. Three years after Lucy's death he married again.
His second marriage, however to Caroline Squires lasted only ten months from
May 1879 until she died in March1880 at the age of 43. Her death date is
recorded in Joe Holly's diary.
Four
years after Caroline's death, Menzo married for the first time and Amos
apparently spent the last 17 years of his life with Menzo in his household.
When he died Menzo was married to his second wife, Ruth. Amos was 82 years old
at the time of his death, the obituary says 84. He lost one son, Truman, in the
Civil War as so many other families did. Except for that death, the rest of his
children made it to adulthood and married. He was spared the infant and child
deaths that were so common in those days. His daughter Helen lost three of her
nine children to early deaths.
Tommy
Smith told my father that there used to be poker games in Amos' barn that the
neighborhood men attended secretly. Amos' father Ira lived on the State Road.
It was Amos who bought the property on Gray's Valley Road that was Aunt
Nellie's and Uncle Harold's when I was a child. It was then in the family for three
generations. Aunt Nellie sold it after Harold died in 1954."

Finan – Murphy family can be found on the PASULLIV website under GROUP NINE*
produced by BettyAnn Goodyear, which takes the ancestory of Finan's, Murphy's,
McMahon's back to Ireland. Her obituary is also in GROUP THREE** on that site
as well and states the joining of two IRISH families. Her grandfather, great
grandfather, both named Patrick Finan have the first graves in the St. Basil's
cemetary. The Finan's and Murphy's settled in New Albany Township, Bradford County
out the Ladsburg road from Dushore but belonged to St Basils Church. Mary had
to drop out of High School to raise her siblings when her mother Anna became
ill. Ken and Mary met at the Colley Grange Hall, don't ask me how they got
across the county. They first lived on the Joshua McCarty homestead for a
couple year around 1940 before moving to the Herman place about a mile out of
Dushore on the Overton Rd. This place had an outhouse and a hand pump in the
pantry for water. Teresa, Gerald and Kate truly walked a mile to school. About
1954 they bought the small Mosier farm with 25 acres at the top of the hill on
Overton Rd. This place overlooked the town of Dushore. Ken was in the CC Corp
during the war."

piece of McCarty history came into view on November 13, 2002 when Josephine
Finan McCarty passed away. She was the widow of Kenneth McCarty (1916-1984),
who was the son of Sumner's brother, Samuel McCarty (1877-1961) and Cora Smith
(1881-1971). That is, Kenneth was Sumner's nephew. By marrying Josephine,
Kenneth brought together the old McCarty settler family and one of the
prominent immigrant Irish families of Sullivan county that came to the new
World in the mid-1800s. Such are the unusual connections that we find in the

Mary
Josephine Finan McCarty, 84, lifelong resident of Dushore, Pa. died Wednesday
Nov. 13, 2002 at the Highlands, LaPorte, Pa. after a lengthy illness.
Mary
was born March 16, 1918 at home in New Albany, a daughter of the late Patrick
J. and Anna J. Murphy Finan. She was married 44 years to the late Kenneth L.
McCarty who died in 1984. She worked for the Commonwealth Telephone Company for
several years as well as SullCraft Industries in Dushore.
Mary was a beloved wife,
mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed having family gatherings.
She was an avid seamstress and baker, being well known for her home bread and
sticky buns. She cherished time spent with her grandchildren. Mary was a member
of St. Basil's church and a member of its former Altar & Rosary society.
She was a 4-H leader for many years and volunteered at the Highlands in
Dushore, Pa. She belonged to the Country Quilters that gathered at Sullivan
Terrace. Mary enjoyed helping others in a quiet manner and asked for nothing in
return.
She is survived by two sons
and daughter-in-law; Gerald and Louise McCarty of Salt Lake City, UT and John
and Kathy McCarty of Dushore, Pa. five daughters and sons-in-law; Theresa and
Kenneth Sherman of Scranton, Pa. Marie Kathleen (Kate) Meckley of
Montoursville, Pa.; Joan & Douglas Phillips of Troy, Pa. Barbara Gorrell of
Bloomsburg, Pa. and Julia and Robert Roy of
Laporte, Pa. Two sisters; Rita Rohe and Geraldine Arey
both of Dushore, Pa. Sister-in-law, Mary R. Finan of Dushore, Pa. eight

Mary was predeceased by brothers; Vincent (Pete) Finan and Leonard (Pop) Finan,

held on Saturday Nov. 16, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral
Home, 206 Water St, Dushore, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.
at St. Basil's Roman Catholic Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Michael B. Harris,

74, of Laporte, Pa., passed away on Thursday evening, Sept. 29, 1994 at the
Wilkes-Barre Veteran's Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born on June 12,
1920, in Elkland Township, Sullivan County, Pa., he was the son of the late
Samuel and Cora Smith McCarty.
Raymond was a U.S.
Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre and participating
in the D-Day invasion. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
On April 27, 1994, he
was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jean Ruth Hess McCarty. On Feb.
28, 1994, they celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.
Prior to his
retirement in 1982, he had been employed by the Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation as a mechanic, and was a former lumberman at Flynn Lumber Co.
and the Fred Lee Lumber Co.
His memberships
included the American Legion Post No. 601 of Sonestown; the Muncy V.F.W.;
Mountain Ash Cemetery Association; and Laporte Fire Company, where he as fire
chief for 25 years. He was a 30-year member of the Laporte (last line did not
appear).
He is survived by:
two sons, Dennis R. McCarty of Rapid City, S.D., and Lee M. McCarty of Mildred,
Pa.; three daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Sharon) Spako of Muncy RR 1, Mrs. Ronald

Jean Ruth Hess
McCarty, 71, of Laporte, PA, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 1994 at Divine
Providence Hospital in Williamsport, PA.
She was born on June
17, 1922 in Auburn, NY, the daughter of the late Howard H. and J. Ethel Riley
Hess.
Most
of her lifetime was spent in the Laporte area.
On February 28, 1994,
Jean and her husband, Raymond McCarty celebrated 52 years of marriage.
She was formerly
employed by Fred Lee Lumber Company, of Navou, PA, the Sullivan County
Courthouse, and the Philadelphia Osteopathic Medical Center, as a cook.
Presently she was
employed by the Sullivan County School District at the high school as a
cafeteria worker, giving 13 years of service.
Mrs. McCarty was a member of the American Legion Post
#601 Ladies Auxiliary, of Sonestown; the Rock Run Assemly of God Church; the
Womens's Aglow of Rock Run Church, and the Laporte
She left surviving
her husband, Raymond McCarty, at home; two sons: Dennis R. McCarty, of Rapid
City, S. D.; Lee M. McCarty, of Mildred, PA; three daughters; Mrs. Daniel
(Sharon) Spako, of Muncy RD1, Mrs. Ronald (Sherry) Eberlin of Sonestown, PA,
Mrs. Arthur (Kathy) Durland, of Dushore, PA, Rev. J. Roy Deming, of Wisconsin;
thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Preceded her in death
were her parents Howard and J. Ethel McCarty; a stepfather, Jaruis Deming; a
half-frother, Marshall Ryan and a daughter, Cheryll Guglielmi.
Funeral services were
held on Monday, May 2, 1994 at 11 a.m. in the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home,
119 Carpenter St., Dushore, PA, with the Rev. James Bechtel, her pastor,
officiating.
Interment
was in Mountain Ash Cemetery in Laporte, PA.
Friends and family called on Sunday evening, May 1, 1994,
from 7 to 9 p.m. at the McHenry Funeraal Home, in Dushore."

M. Sherman
Brian M. Sherman, 43, of Dunmore, died Wednesday at the
Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center after a courageous battle with brain
cancer. He and his wife, the former Denise Cogliette, were to celebrate 10
years of marriage on Sept. 30.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of Kenneth
and Teresa Sherman. Brian was a graduate of Scranton Technical School and
attended East Stroudsburg University. Brian was a standout on the football
field in high school, college and with the Scranton Eagles. He was an avid
archer, angler and golfer. Most of all, he loved spending time with his son.
Also surviving are a son, Hunter, at home; a
brother, Kenneth, Hollywood, Md.; a niece and a nephew.
The
funeral will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 322
Chestnut St., Dunmore. Those planning to attend are asked to go directly to the
church. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Friends are
invited to call Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Morell-LaBelle Funeral Home, 301
Chestnut St., Dunmore. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions
go toward the establishment of a research fund in honor of Brian, c/o 502
Sherwood Ave., Dunmore, PA 18512.
