The Leedom Family, pp 59-62, states the following:

 

He was the founder of the "famous Thomas L. Leedom Company" He left the family farm and "went west" to Cincinnati, Ohio where he "became associated" with firm of Shillito & Co. who ran a department store that included carpets; based on that experience in floor coverings , at close of Civil War he returned to Phila. and became associated with Aaron Shaw under the name "Leedom and Shaw" with a retail carpet store at #910 Arch St in Sep 1865, branching out to wholesale or "jobbing department" at #635 Market St. in which they continued until latter part of 1869, when Robert and Arthur Stewart were admitted to the firm; 1870 established a plant on Howard St, Phila. in connection w/Market St. store (book describes various types of looms and floor coverings) ; Labor problems in 1885 saw the plant relocate to Bristol (P A?) in 1886, the new plant doing weaving and dyeing and yarn spinning; during WWI the plant was turned over to Gov't to make tent cloth and horse blanket lining; prior to his death, the mills were purchased from the Bristol Improvement Company, the business incorporated in PA , and offices "are maintained in all the principle cities of this country, and the company' s travelers touch every State in the Union."

 

NB - the name of the department store was actually "John Shillito & Co", founded in 1832, bought by F&R Lazarus Co. in 1930, which became part of the Federated Department Stores the next year. See Wikipedia and the Ohio Historical Society sites online.

Scott & Kathryn (Leedom) Ives Genealogy Pages, /leedom_family.html have a family of Rachel Leedom married to Jacob Thomas in 1798 with 8 children. 1 who died at a few months was a Hannah. There were 6 sons, Richard Leedom Thomas, Ruben Thomas, John Thomas, Mordecai Thomas, George Thomas & Jacob Thomas (says no issue for Jacob). George is unlikely as he was born in 181 7 but the others may be candidates for Hannah's father. HOWEVER, Katie Leedom emailed Carolyn Lee Mackie Applebee 6 April 2007 to say she had a marriage announcement for Hannah and Thom as from the Bucks County (PA) Intelligencer that lists a "Samuel Thomas of Philadelphia" as Hannah's father.

Viewed on Ancestry.com, Newspaper database, on 16 Mar 2006, image 7 of 8, her obituary is partially visible.

 

In 1912, March 1 was a Friday. Thus the funeral appears to have been on Wednesday, February 28 (1912 was a leap year and thus had a Feb 29th).  Therefore, Hannah appears to have died on Sunday, February 25, 1912.

13 Mar 2007 email from Gael Crimmins says he lived at 1119 Spruce Street in Philadelphia fro m 1906 to 1910; but in another part of her email she said Abbie Leedom convinced Charles to leave Spruce Street for the Rose Tree Farm in Media - since they were married in 1916 he may have lived on Spruce until then.

As of letter dated 30 Oct 1978 Varrell lived at 310 Morningside Drive, Sarasota, FL 33577. Although she was christened "Florence", she was always known as Varrell to our family. In fact, if you try to look her up as "Florence" Leedom you will not find her. I don't know anything about her birth family so am not sure about how she was listed before she was married, but there is 1 likely "Varrell Drew" in the 1930 census in Maine; likely because a sibling's name is the same as one of her children's names. So it's possible my mother's memory is incorrect and the Eachus book is correct, that her name was actually "Varrell Florence", not the other way around.

In conversations with Clara Leedom /Buffum/ Mackie, she told Carolyn Mackie Applebee that Eleanore's parents lived in the Belgravia Hotel and that's where Eleanore was raised. The Belgravia Hotel was between 18th and 19th Streets on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia.

 

Death Certificate Informant was Geo. M. Buffum (H), Funeral Director was Robert L Stump, Turner & Stevens Co, Pasadena, CA; burial at Mt. View Cemetery, Altadena, CA on 7 Oct 1937 (although death certificate was filed on 6 Oct 1937 (by Wilton L. Halverson M.C.H.)); occupation listed as "Housewife" in "own home"; home address listed as "675 Ventura St., Altadena, Calif. " ("St" is printed on form so may not have been street).

 

Clara Leedom Buffum Mackie told Carolyn Lee Mackie Applebee that her mother originally got sick when Clara was 6 (1933); death certificate states that the "physician/autopsy surgeon", Geo . S. Sharp of 65 No. Madison, Pasadena, attended Eleanore from July 1935 until her death.

GMB was sent to the Thatcher School (boarding school) in CA and then attended Stanford, graduating in 1912. Clara also said that her parents met when Eleanore came out to CA to see a friend, Annie Thompson, but they went back to Philadelphia to get married, then later returned to CA where they bought the citrus ranch in Altadena.

He was 29 at first marriage (does not give age of 1st marriage for Clara). If accurate that would mean he was married first in 1885. Since Carolyn Mackie Applebee has seen the wedding invitation for Edwin and Clara in 1891, this would seem to indicate he had been married before.

Gives Clara's birth date as 9 Mar 1864.
