Descendants of John Finan

by Carol Brotzman

January 30, 2015

We are grateful to Carol for this historical research.  Once again, we encounter an Irish family where multiples of Patrick, John, Michael and Francis, on the male side, and Margaret, Ann, May and Bridget show up on the female roster.  Carol has done an amazing job of initially digging out the relationships.    Please address any corrections, updates or suggestions to her at the e-mail address above or to Bob Sweeney, the Sullivan County Genealogical Web Site Administrator.

Notes for Kenneth Levi McCarty:

Hi Bob,

Just noticed your recent posting (below).  Do you know if this was the Kenneth Levi McCarty (1916-1984) who was married to Mary Josephine (Finan) McCarty (1918-2002)?

If so any idea what the daughter's name was?  Mary's obituary in the Towanda Review showed two sons; Gerald F., and John; and five daughters; Theresa, Marie Kathleen, Joan, Barbara and Julia.

Hi Carol & Bob,

When I saw Bob's posting about Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth McCarty having a daughter in 1952, this is the only one I had in tree that came close so I wrote him to see if he could confirm.  Here is what I have, but I don't know if it is the same Kenneth McCarty or not.

"Another piece of McCarty history came into view on November 13, 2002 when Josephine Finan McCarty passed away. She was the widow of Kenneth McCarty (1916-1984), who was the son of Sumner's brother, Samuel McCarty (1877-1961) and Cora Smith (1881-1971). That is, Kenneth was Sumner's nephew. By marrying Josephine, Kenneth brought together the old McCarty settler family and one of the prominent immigrant Irish families of Sullivan county that came to the new World in the mid-1800s. Such are the unusual connections that we find in the history of Sullivan County and its families. Here is the obituary for Josephine Finan McCarty, courtesy of Carol Brotzman."

He began dairy farming with his father on the family farm and continued this operation until March, 1946.

Subject: Prayer Chain

Hi Jane,

Gwen asked me to send you an e-mail to start the prayer chain.  Tolise (Gwen's sister) has been diagnosed with leukemia.  They drew off bone marrow yesterday to send to the lab to get the final results of what "type" of leukemia so they can proceed with treatment.  Please pray for her and also for Gwen.  Gwen is doing better, but she still can't hardly have a conversation without coughing up a lung!  She has it bad, but she keeps on going.

 Thanks everybody

Sandy

Crash claims life of Dushore man

11/27/2006 Daily Review

A 23-year-old Dushore man was killed in a one-vehicle accident on state Route 87 in Forkston Township, Wyoming County, at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, state police at Tunkhannock said.

Arthur W. Rohe II, 23, of Dushore, who was driving a 2006 Mazda 3 sedan, was ejected from the vehicle, and sustained major injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wyoming County coroner.

Rohe was driving northbound on state Route 87 near the North Branch Township line at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate a left-hand curve, police said.

He lost control of his vehicle due to icy patches along the fog line of the road. The vehicle went across the center line of the road, struck an embankment and became airborne.

The vehicle continued to flip/roll several times before coming to rest in an upright position, blocking the southbound lane of the road.

Police said Rohe was not using the vehicle’s restraint system/seatbelt.

The accident occurred about 1 1/2 miles west of state Route 3001.

Wyalusing Man Dies in Tanker Crash

Liquid Spill Contamination was Limited

—BY RICK HIDUK—

The battered tank that came loose from a truck driven by Richard Ottaviani for WPX Energy lost about 3,000 gallons of production fluid removed from a well pad in Susquehanna County. Ottaviani lost his life in the crash on Turkey Path Road in Wyalusing Township on Oct. 2. Photo by Rick Hiduk The battered tank that came loose from a truck driven by Richard Ottaviani for WPX Energy lost about 3,000 gallons of production fluid removed from a well pad in Susquehanna County. Ottaviani lost his life in the crash on Turkey Path Road in Wyalusing Township on Oct. 2. Photo by Rick Hiduk water tanker crash on Turkey Path Road in Wyalusing Township on Oct. 2 that resulted in the death of a Wyalusing man, also led to contamination of soil along the roadway and in a ravine carrying an unnamed tributary of Wyalusing Creek.

Richard Wayne Ottaviani, 49, died in the crash, which happened at about 4:45 p.m. He was traveling west on Turkey Path Road in a triaxle truck owned by Fenton Welding and Transport and leased by WPX Energy.

A state police report has not yet been released to the media to suggest how Ottaviani lost control of the rig, but skid marks run approximately 300 feet down the hill to the point on an S-curve where the chassis overturned and the 4,300-gallon tank dislodged.

Those responding to the crash included the Wyalusing Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Memorial EMS, Bradford County Emergency Management and fire firefighters from Rush, Laceyville, and Wysox.

First responders and Bradford County Coroner Thomas Carman suggested that Ottaviani died instantly, but a manway cover on the top of the tank failed, and thousands of gallons of spent fracking fluids that originated in Susquehanna County spilled onto the roadway.

Booms were put in place below the crash site to limit the flow of the brine water, but not before approximately 3,000 gallons of the fluid had run into a culvert and flowed through two underground pipes to the aforementioned ravine on the opposite side of the road.

Estimates of the amount of fluid released varies on two reports issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), but the documents indicate that approximately 1,298 gallons of “process water” remained in the dislodged tank, which was temporarily moved with the rest of the wreckage to Titan Transfer yard near the Wyalusing Township building in Merryall.

According to Trey Taylor of Titan, the fluid was pumped out into another tanker and moved to Tioga County that evening.

An Emergency Response Incident Report released by DEP notes that the tanker had come from the Hayes Pad in Forest Lake Township, Susquehanna County, and was enroute to Antrim in Tioga County for proper disposal of the contents.

In addition to the brine water, unknown amounts of motor oil, coolant, and transmission fluid were also released during the crash. Fortunately, conditions were so dry at the time of the crash, that the liquids were largely absorbed by the soil in the ditch and on the bank above the empty creek bed.

The incident report also mentions that a local PennDOT crew used sand and a road broom to clean the pavement after the wreckage was removed from the site. Wyalusing Township maintenance personnel applied cold patch to some of the larger divots in the roadway.

Pennsylvania Game Commission Conservation Officer Jeff Oleniacz heard about the accident and reached Turkey Path Road before dark, giving him about an hour and a half to take photos and make notes, which he subsequently turned over to a DEP representative, who arrived at about 7 p.m.

Truck company owner, Daniel Fenton, requested a crew from EPS (Environmental Services & Products) of Vermont, who arrived on the scene at about 9:30 p.m. and put a large tarp over the most affected area. They returned for a more detailed inspection of the site the next morning.

A separate Storage System Report released by DEP relates that agency officials met with representatives of EPS of Vermont, Felton Welding, and WPX Energy at the scene of the accident to develop a plan.

According to the DEP report, the Fenton company agreed to excavate the site under the supervision of EPS of Vermont. In order to remove as much of the contaminated soil as possible, it was decided that the impacted dirt would be removed and the area backfilled.

As of Tuesday, the culvert along Turkey Path Road appeared to have been reclamated. The now empty water tank, the truck chassis, and other debris from the accident scene remained at the Titan yard. A large gray tarp enveloped the cab of the truck.

The DEP Storage System Report concludes with the following: “A release of a regulated substance from a non-regulated truck to the soils and waterways of the Commonwealth is a violation of sections 301, 307, 401, and 402 of Pennsylvania’s Clean Streams Law.”

Thomas McNary, a Licensed Professional Geologist employed in DEP’s Environmental Cleanup and Brownfields Program, noted that all parties relative to the crash were cooperative in the investigation. Dan Spadoni, a DEP community relations coordinator, indicated via email that there has been “no decision yet on any enforcement against either company.”

Local residents familiar with Turkey Path Road know that it is relatively steep and curvy. As of Aug. 29, it was designated by PennDOT as part of an official detour to be used by heavy trucks in the wake of posting a weight restriction on the Route 706 bridge over Cold Creek in Stevens Township.

Overweight trucks traveling west on Route 706 toward Wyalusing must turn across Wyalusing Creek at Stevensville and take Spring Hill Road to Turkey Path Road to return to Route 706.

“It is our understanding that our driver was following that detour,” WPX Energy Public Relations Director Scott Miller said of Ottaviani. Several sources have indicated that the truck was inspected, and Miller confirmed, “We have not been informed that there were any defects with the vehicle.”

A PennDOT spokesperson deferred questions about the bridge restrictions to the PA State Police Motor Carrier Department. As of press time, there was no response to a phone message left with the department.

See “Rick’s Report” on Page 4 for a personal perspective of PennDOT’s bridge postings.
