The Descendants of James or Mathew Fetherbee

The Descendants of James or Mathew Fetherbee

The material in this summary was organized and contributed by Carol Hoose Brotzman, who lives in Bradford County, PA. Carol was the Church Historian for Beaver Meadows Church in Tuscarora Township, PA. The material is assembled and edited from research conducted by Carol and Fetherbee/Fetherby/Featherbay family members. Of particular value was the assistance of the late Terry Callen and Kathy Heilman. Please send any additional information on family members or corrections to Carol. She will consult with Kathy and other family members. Carol can be reached for inquiries concerning your line via e-mail at [email protected].

You will also see many references in this history to a local area Bennett family. This family may or may not be related to the Sullivan County Bennett family. Time and further research may tell. In the meanwhile, you can find the resting place for several members of the local Bennetts at Fowler Hill Cemetery in Rush Township, Susquehanna County.

The Descendants of James or Mathew Fetherbee

This by far is not a complete genealogy of the Fetherbay family, but a very good start at understanding this complicated lineage. Some of these people were real characters, but that makes genealogy interesting. We are proud of them anyway! They give us a chuckle from time to time. The roots to this family start in Pike Township, now Stevens Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. One branch moved onto Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. I have made so many great contacts with this family I feel blessed and grateful to share this information with others.

Generation No. 1

James or Mathew Fetherbee married (1) Elizabeth McVilly *. Kathy Heilman has located church records indicating that James/Mathew lived in Monroe County, PA. It is not clear where he married Elizabeth McVilly, but her name was listed for the baptism of three children. So far, there is no record that proves James/Mathew ever settled in Bradford County. Their son James did so, however.
Editor's Note: In July 2007, John McVilly sent us the following message: "-----I have traced the McVilly family history to a William Henry McVilly, a convict sent to Tasmania in 1822 and died of natural causes in 1848 --then it seems a free man. William`s place of birth was given on the convict records as County Mayo, Ireland. We know that all the McVilly`s in Australia trace back to this one convict. I have believed that it is more than possible that William would have had other brothers/sisters so I have noted with interest this record of Elizabeth McVilly being married to James Fetherbee in 1805. It may be that Elizabeth would have left Ireland around this period and gone to America. I would be most grateful if you could shed any light on any known ancestry of Elizabeth McVilly and/or any other persons with the Mcvilly name living in your area."

Note: For years, Kathy Heilman has tried to find a connection between Nathaniel Fetherby of Bucks Co. and James/Mathew. Monroe County split from Northampton County which was part of Bucks County at one time. She believes that Nathaniel, who served as a private in the Revolutionary War, is the father of James/Mathew, but has no proof to date. The only child she has been able to tie with certainty to Nathaniel is a Benjamin Fetherby. Nathaniel married his wife Jane in New Jersey. Looking at the Bucks County tax records, Nathaniel had difficulty holding on to his land and animals. It seems that few if any of the Fetherbays had much money, or regularly attended church. They weren't generally landowners, they moved often and "sure didn't like the census takers." They didn't leave an easy trail to follow. John Fetherbay is the earliest progenitor for whom Kathy can find any information. He settled in NY on Long Island. Somehow, from that ancestry, the family ended up in Bradford and Sullivan Counties, PA in the nineteenth centuries.

His mother and father, Riley and Lorania Potter, were buried at Beaver Meadows without benefit of a headstone either. Riley received a GAR VETERAN military headstone in 2001 through the efforts of Beaver Meadows Church historian. Please contact Carol Brotzman at [email protected]. if you have any information on these matters. Interestingly, Riley and his sons Thomas, Isaac and Abraham Potter, all served in the GAR. Our source, Glenn Ferris Bennett, Leroy's cousin, reports that he was quite a colorful character to search out. His family jokes that his picture is on the "most wanted" list. The story goes around that he was involved in the counterfeiting of quarters in Beaver Meadows. He used to have our contributor's husband's grandfather, Clark Brotzman, go to the store and buy him chew (tobacco) and pay with those quarters. If anyone was going to get caught, it wasn’t going to be him! His partner in crime was another relative, James Culver, who died in 1922. Both got away with their crimes. A story comes down through the family that Leroy sold the recipe for Luden's cough drops to the Luden's Company. That gave him some cash. However, the story also goes that he stole the formula from Louanna Cobb, his half brother's wife. Her recipe, found in a recipe book belonging to Susie Bond Pickett, could support this claim. Carol Brotzman has what may be the only copy of a handwritten Ladies Aide of Beaver Meadows Cookbook with favorite recipes of the local ladies, including the cough drop recipe. It is pictured below. The book is not dated. So much for this colorful character! If any one has stories to share about him, we’d love to hear them. You can read more here about Glenn Ferris Bennett and his stories. He died in October 2005 at age 100.

Cough Drop Recipe
Invented by Luanna Cobb and Possibly "Lifted"

Here is a translation of the "cough syrup" recipe, also thanks to Carol Brotzman:

Developed by Ina Beeman Wooton (November 28, 1890 -January 21, 1972), wife of Harry Olin Wootton (December 31, 1892 -May 18, 1961):

2 Tablespoons flax seed
1 Quart of Butter
Boil down to one pint
Juice of one lemon
¼ pound of hard candy
1-cup brown sugar
Heat till candy is dissolved
Stir

Notes for Leroy Featherbay:

One source recorded his original marriage date as January 1, 1898. He has descendants from his son Arthur residing in New York. Judy Featherbay Yerkie is also a descendant.

In a message dated 07/Jun/01, Glenn Bennett writes to Terry Callen:

I knew your great-grandfather very well. He was my mother's half brother. He being the son of Juliet Snell, who was my mother's mother. He was most certainly a colorful person. He often worked for my father on the farm when I was a young boy. He had a reputation for being a great fighter! He had a famous ring which he used to damage his opponents with. I wonder whatever happened to that ring? From his first marriage, he had two daughters, Flora and ?????. Their mother left Leroy and took the youngest daughter with her. Flora was left with relatives, my mother being one who raised her and made a home for her. She worked her way through Camptown High School and through Mansfield University, and taught school in Bethlehem, PA. The other sister we never knew. Leroy married the second time to Lilly Langton and to them was born Art and Mae. Art visited me about three years ago, looking for Beaver Meadows Cemetery where many relatives are interned. If you would send me pertinent questions, I would be happy to give you answers. Hope we could meet sometime in the future. Art was about 10 years younger than I was if I remember right. I am 96 now and have had a stroke so please forgive any mistakes.

PS. Your great-great grandfather's name was George. Hope to hear from you soon. I only live two miles from the cemetery, in case either one of you would like to visit and see more of your kin folk!!

Here is Terry Callen's response to Glenn Bennett:

Glenn, nice to hear from you. Leroy's first marriage was to my great-grandmother, Bridget (Agnes) Kernen. They had three children, Flora, whom my great-grandmother left with him, Hugh (born after 1900, died before 1903) and Margaret (born September 3, 1901). Bridget took Margaret with her. Margaret was my grandmother.

When Bridget left Leroy in May, 1903, she went to West Philadelphia where she said she was going to marry a wealthier man. Leroy sued for divorce and it was granted in December, 1905. When my grandmother remarried in June, 1921, the permission paper for a minor was signed by "Agnes McGrath". I have reason to believe my great-grandmother was never married to James McGrath.

Anyway, my grandmother is a mystery of her own. She had four children in five years (including my dad), but my granddad (a hemophiliac) was going on binges all the time. So, she pulled up in a taxi one day to his mother's house, where he was visiting, dropped off all four children and got back in the cab. No one ever saw her again...this was the late 1920s or early 1930s.

My grandfather put the kids in the Catholic Children's Bureau and my dad was adopted at age 20 in 1945, so the kindly widow who took him in could get his allotment check.

I can't find anything more out about my grandmother. But I won't give up. It was so great to hear from you. You take care.

Terry Callen

The first house is where Walter and Mabel Wootton Sharer raised their family. This structure was the former White Birch School which was once located a few hundred feet up the road. It was rolled down the hill on logs to its present location. When Walter's parents passed away, the family moved to the big house "next door". All these buildings are located on the family farm. There is a garage between the two houses in this view.

Note: Skinners Eddy is actually part of Laceyville if you look on a map. Ebenezer Skinner was the founder; it was founded at the mouth of Tuscarora Creek and at the eddy of the Susquehanna River. It was a great landing for rafts traveling the river. It once was a very popular crossroads town. Now it is just a few houses and a tavern. The church has even moved to Black Walnut (where the Sturdevants settled a few miles to the east), but is still called Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church. Here are two pictures of a beautiful paperweight auctioned on eBay in June 2003. It has the local church on it with the pastor's picture too. The script reads: "J.W. Johnson , Pastor Skinners Eddy M E Church". According to the History of the Wyoming Conference by A. F. Chaffee (1904), John Wesley Johnson was the minister at Skinners Eddy until 1904, so that helps us place the item in time. The paperweight measures 4 x 2 1/2 inches
