Originally known as Fry's Cemetery, the lot was set aside for school and burial purposes on April 1, 1840, and conveyed to George Bowersox and Henry Walter. The earliest recorded burial is that of David Walter in 1838. The cemetery was incorporated in June, 1909, as the Union Salem Cemetery Company, the first trustees being John A. Walter, Howard A.
