The funeral of John SPENCE a well known and respected citizen of Fairfield, who died suddenly Friday July 25th was held from the home of Mrs Margaret McLaughlin. Mr Spence leaves two sisters Mrs Clemintine Stewart of Iowa and Mrs Rebecca Moss of Lancaster. He was born in Martic township seventy three years ago and resided there until seventeen years ago when he moved with Mrs McLaughlin to the Village of Fairfield. Mr Spence was a member of Bethesda Church. The following is the obituary for Jacob Spence, the son of John Balfour Spence and Barbara Shoff Spence.
Jacob Spence, a former well known citizen of Germantown, died at his home in Indianapolis, Saturday morning, of appoplexy. He was in feeble health for several years and the end, while sudden, was not unexpected. He was born 81 years ago in Lancaster County, Pa., and came to Indiana with the family of his uncle, the late Rudolph Shoff, in April, 1851. From that time to his death, a period of almost 60 years, he was" a resident of this State. In March, 1855, he was married to Amanda Condo, daughter of the late Adam Condo, and who with three sons and two daughters are yet living. In 1862, the Germautown cornet band, of which Mr. Spence was leader, tendered their services to Gov Morton. They were accepted and enlisted as the Twelfth Indiana band serving until the close of the war.
He was long a member of the Evangelical Church and served his Master as becomes a true Christian. He was also a member of Geo. H. Thomas post, G. A. R. of Indianapolis and they accompanied his body to the tomb in Crown Hill cemetery, Tuesday afternoon. Services were held at the family home where a large number of friends paid their last respects. Rev Baumgardner conducted a short service of prayer and spoke feelingly of his relations as pastor to the deceased and his family. Mrs. Kramer sang four solosspecial favorites of Mr. Spenceand these were rendered with impressive excellence. The floral tributes were of rnany designs and great beauty. Truly a good man has died

The following documents are from the Lancaster county courthouse, there were questions on his will as it was signed when he was on his death bed. His first wife dec'd had inheritance from her family. So there apparently was some contention as to what was left to the 2nd wife and her children.

A letter from Sept 1898 started
My Dear Niece(no name given)
The letter reads like a response to a question ask to her about money they maybe entitled to (as a family) But says they may have a hard time with their claim With no records of the older folks.
Then mentions trying to check the (?an illegible word which begins with B Maybe Bible) of grandmother Fulertons people
Then signed R.L. M(& a torn corner)
an empty envelope among these papers was marked my letter from Ant Becky Moss, I am assuming this letter is from her.
