Activity Summary:
Patrick O Gleason was born in Ireland and came to the US at age
four. He was living in Lebanon County at the time of the outbreak
of the war. He enlisted for three years in February 1864. His unit
was attached to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Army Corps,
Army of the Potomac.
Shortly after his enlistment, this
unit was engaged in the Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania
in Virginia in May 1864.
The unit then proceeded to the Battle
of Cold Harbor in June and then to the defense of Washington in
July 1864.
The unit was then assigned to Major
General Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign attached to the Army
of the Shenandoah from August to December 1864.
One significant encounter during this
campaign was the Battle of Cedar Creek, Oct 19, 1864, which was
the last major battle in the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil
War. This battle seemed won by the southern attackers but Sheridan
rode in and rallied the troops to a crushing counterattack that
routed General Earley's men and eliminated his army as a
major threat in the Shenandoah Valley for the rest of the war.
In December 1864, his unit was moved
to the siege of Petersburg until the Union moved forward with
ending the war in the Appomattox Campaign by forcing the enemy to
retreat westward.
After the surrender of Lee and his
army in April 1865, the unit moved on to Richmond, Va and
Washington DC where they remained until mustered out in June 1865.
