Adolph was born in Germany in 1844 and died in 1920. He enlisted at the age of 18. He participated in the Battles of Antietam, Gettysburg and several others. His name s on the Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg. He is buried at Southside Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Lois has a wonderful story to tell about her Great Grandfather Adolph Slape. The story was found in the history book of Westmoreland County. Lois's Grandfather, Paul C. Schlingman, (a fire chief from Pittsburgh who was Jeannette, Pennsylvania's first paid Fire Department), wrote about Adolph. Paul's wife, Lois's Grandmother, Emma Elizabeth Slape was a daughter of Adolph Slape.
Checking the Soldiers and Sailores Memorial Hall in Oakland, Pennsylvania, Lois found a Henry Schleepe, no Adolph Slape. From family stories, Lois's father told of this young man, Adolph, running away and joining the Union Army. With further research, Lois wrote to the National archives for the war records of Henry Schleepe - true name of Adolph Slape. Henry was the Company I, 46th Pennsylvania Infantry of the Union Army for three years and one month. This regiment fought battles in Virginia, Tennessee, and moved into Georgia for the beginning of Sherman's march to the sea.
Lois's Great Grandmother Berger was with her mother at Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. She was 16 at the time. Adolph and she were married in 1869 after his discharge. She was 20 and he was 23.
