Thomas Edgar Hughes

Rev. Thomas E. Hughes was a minister with the Shenango Presbytery.  He was ordained 28 Aug 1799.  

Rev. Thomas E. Hughes, who was the first pastor in the bounds of the [Shenango] Presbytery, continued his pastorate over Mt. Pleasant Church for over thirty-one years.  His influence for good in the early history of this Presbytery was very great. For many years his name stood at the head of the roll, and he did much for the upbuilding of Christ's kingdom in this whole region of the country.  Though his efforts an Academy was erected in Darlington, in which quite a number of young men were prepared for college and then studied theology with him and became very useful ministers.  He was an earnest preacher and a faithful pastor.

Rev. Thomas Hughes died 2 May 1828 at age 76 years.

Among the first ministers of the Gospel who visited this region [Lawrence County], some of whom remained permanently, was Thomas Edgar Hughes, who settled at Greensburg, now called Darlington. He was a man of mark, and the first settled pastor north of the Ohio. He was of Welch origin, his grandfather having come from Wales. He was born in York county, Pa., April 7, 1769. Licensed by the Presbytery of Ohio, now Pittsburgh, in 1798, he was ordained and installed over the churches of New Salem and Mount Pleasant, August 28, 1796.

Among the first ministers of the gospel who visited this region was Thomas Edgar Hughes, who settled at Greersburg, now called Darlington. He was the first settled pastor north of the Ohio. He was of Welsh ancestry and a native of Pennsylvania, born in York County, in 1769. Licensed by the Presbytery of Ohio (now Pittsburg) in 1798, he was ordained and installed over the churches of New Salem and Mount Pleasant, August 28, 1796.
