Note: Location of the areas is according to what they are today.
- Until 1901, Punjab included the areas of NWFP, when a separated province was created. However, the area was known as the North West Frontier.
- Baluchistan includes the former princely state of Kalat (Kelat).
- The areas of FATA and FANA were created after independence.
FATA: Federally Administered Tribal Areas. Located along the border with Afghanistan and includes the Khyber Pass.
FANA: Federally Administered Northern Areas. Located in the northern part of the country, bordering Chitral and Kashmir. Includes Gilgit and the former princely state of Hunza.
